Engine has failed and is unrepairable. The car has been maintained well according to the manufacturer’s guidelines with regular oil changes. It has only 94,875 miles. The mechanic said that there is probably a piston gasket failure leading to oil leak into the engine. This appears to have been reported with this year/model vehicles. I would like Volvo to take ownership of poor manufacturing and fix the problem to my satisfaction.

Discovered that my engine is burning oil. There was no warning from my vehicle or from Volvo (during regular maintenance) that this was happening. It was just sudden that the check engine light went on and I checked the oil and found that it was basically empty. Volvo confirmed that the engine is burning oil and that this model and make was discovered to have this engine issue. Volvo did not offer a solution other than to buy a new vehicle to replace this one. In my research online, this problem is common for this model and make 2012 S60 T5, may other have reported the same issue and it seems that there is a recall for this problem but my vehicle (VIN) does not report this to be a problem for my car. I’m not sure what to do.

The contact owns a 2012 Volvo S60. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, she smelled a burning odor in the interior of the vehicle, after which the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to coast to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle failed to restart. After a visual inspection of the engine compartment, the contact became aware that the engine was without oil; however, the low oil warning light was not illuminated. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer nor an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V592000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 137,000.

On June 2, 2023 I went to start my car and the engine would not turn over. The dashboard displayed a number of warning lights and messages (DSTC Service Required, SRS Airbag Service Urgent, Transmission Service Required, Coolant System Service Required). When the tow truck driver arrived later that day, they tried to jumpstart my car but reported the battery was completely dead. I had the car taken to a local shop that specialized in Volvo cars. A few days later the shop called to tell me that not only was the battery dead, but my car key was no longer responding, and that the Engine Control Module "exploded." None of the mechanics at the shop had seen such a thing before. The shop also told me that they could not figure out what had been draining the battery. I was advised to reach out to the dealership. I did and happened to meet with the general manager and a lead technician who happened to be on site. I was told that while rare, the Engine Control Module can "explode." I was willing to drop the matter until I started seeing "Low Battery" warnings in early Sept. of 2023. I was finally able to get the car into the dealership on 1/2/24. After talking with the mechanic, he suggested that the satellite radio in my car was continuously draining my battery and to resolve the problem all they would need to do is download new software. A few hours later the mechanic confirmed that my car needed an RDAR upgrade to stop the battery drainage. I do not understand how the dealership could sell me the car without checking to make sure the software had been upgraded in the first place. RDAR failure is not something that pops up as a recall or major safety concern. If the car had lost power while in motion, there could have been serious consequences.

Surpintine belt shredded due to faulty belt tensioner. Shreds of belt wedged between crankshaft timing sprocket on engine causing engine to jump timing while driving down highway and vehicle lost all power and very hard to steer due to all valves in motor bent because of poor design. Definitely a safety concern. Volvo is aware but does nothing. 11,000 dollars to replace engine.

Months later, the vehicle made a clicking noise when I arrived home. When I checked the oil the following morning, there was no oil in car. I was never given a low oil level indication or warning. These headlight assemblies commonly develop significant water ingress problems as they age. Owners report issues in wet climates even when these cars were relatively new, resulting in bulb ignition problems as water finds it way into the ballasts, resulting in high-voltage shorting. The water in the headlight housings also "fogs" up the forward lens, resulting in a poor distribution of light out the front, both poor for the driver and dazzling for oncoming traffic. The headlights can work fine for weeks or months, and then a wet week comes along and 1 or both headlights fail to operate or work but poorly and blind oncoming traffic. If caught after dark in the rain the headlights often fail to function. If this could be solved with new headlight assemblies for a reasonable price, I would not consider this a major safety issue, unfortunately, they are difficult to source, astronomically priced (~$1100 per assembly), and replacing them doesn't seem to fix this problem for many owners of these cars. The way these assemblies are vented from the factory seems to be problematic for water ingress and the position of the ballasts ensures that any significant water ingress causes the ballast to short internally. I believe that the atmospheric vent on these must be positioned in such a way that they suck water in as they cool if its raining. The all-halogen assemblies for these cars work better, likely because there's no ballast for the water to leak into and more heat from the bulb to quickly evaporate the water out of the same assembly design. The poorly designed housing is "saved" by the simpler electronics and thermal output of the bulbs. Unfortunately, different factory programming is required to run the all-halogen assemblies. A recall should be issued to replace all of these gimmicky (and distracting) "steerable" xenon headlights with the halogen versions, with the reprogramming effort included in the recall.

Additionally, the contact stated that on several occasions when the seat belt tongue was inserted inside the buckle, the seat belt failed to latch properly. The contact stated that the latch plate latched securely after several attempts. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. I have experienced the steering in my car to become looser over time. I have found the culprit to be a plastic tension cap on the steering rack itself. The cap appears to have stripped and backed out completely and is now resting against the subframe. There is no warning of this happening and very hard to pinpoint the cause. The effect is that there is about 10 degrees of play in the steering wheel. It appears that it only affects the left wheel as that one is loose and the right wheel is tight. I will be taking it to the dealer to see if there is a replacement or an upgraded version of this cap but feel this should be addressed further as this could happen without warning.

Our seat belts have been problematic because the passenger side is sticky and has to be moved around before it will disengage. When I took it to a dealer they said it was fine and just needed a little lubrication. Lubrication did not help the problem

The steering wheel trim peeled and created a razor sharp surface at the bottom which sliced through my finger and caused pain and bleeding. It is difficult to avoid touching the sharp part of the steering wheel especially at highway speeds. This startled me while driving and distracted me while I attempted to stop the bleeding. Volvo has agreed to replace the trim but will charge for labor if I choose to go into a dealer.

The front windshield has a faulty gasket, I put sealant from Autozone but didn’t help. Water falls down the windshield causing skewed vision. I’m also afraid that there may be some type of short, which can cause damage either parked or driving.

On December 1, 2021 I was driving my 2012 Volvo S60 T5, that I purchased 3/2021 with 99,489 miles on it, on the highway and it stalled without warning after almost crashing. There were no warning alerts or check engine light that came on the dashboard and the car had 1,000 miles until the next oil change. After browsing the internet, we realized that the car had a recall because their vehicles were not warning the driver that there was low oil pressure allowing the driver to continue driving until the engine seized (Recall #R29436; National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaign #13V592000). The recall was repaired by Prestige Auto on 1/2014. I contacted Volvo of North America who opened up a case and then had the car towed to Portland Volvo in Scarborough, Maine for an appointment on December 14, 2021. On December 15, 2021 Portland Volvo informed us that the vehicle’s engine was beyond repair because of an unfortunate mechanical failure due to lack of lubrication. Later that evening I received an email from Volvo of NA stating that they would cover $750 of the repairs. I emailed back asking to wait for a quote from Portland Volvo on how much it was going to be to repair the vehicle. On December 16, 2021 I was informed by Portland Volvo that she spoke with the district manager and that a used engine costs between $10-14,000. Volvo of North America has now decided to retract their $750 offer to help because the car is now out of warranty but it was due to a manufacturer's defect. I spoke with Prestige Auto (the dealership who fixed the repair) and was told that if the repair was actually fixed then it would have done its due diligence and alerted the driver that there wasn't any oil pressure. I have also read articles on these kinds of issues and it states that a recall is to be repaired until it fixes the issue, and obviously the issue wasn't fixed the first time. I asked for an appeal, was denied and now Volvo wont respond back to emails or calls.

I have a 2012 S60R. I just received the recall notice for the front seat belts last week. In September of 2021, the warning light on the dash board intermittently comes on with a warning sound stating that my rear seat belt is not in use. This happens while starting the car and driving. There are no passengers riding in the rear seats of my car when this happens. I have tried to fasten the rear seat belts, but they do not fasten. I can not have passengers in the car due to the malfunction of the rear seat belts which is a safety issue. My vehicle is available for inspection upon request.

My wife and I were driving to BWI airport for a 10:30am flight from Virginia Beach in the Express Lane on I-95N going 75mph when all of a sudden at 8:30am the engine seized and I got a message telling me I would experience "Reduced Engine Performance" as my car puttered to a stop with white smoke pouring out of the exhaust. Prior to this message I had no warnings or messages on my dashboard. I got out of my car to check my oil and it was completely evaporated, so I called AAA. While we are 1 hour into waiting (it is now 9:30am) on the narrow shoulder of two Express Lanes for a tow truck to take our car to a shop at 11:40am and for a Lyft driver to figure out how to get to us, two VDOT employees told us we had to move our car by 11am otherwise the state police will tow us. I managed to call a local tow company who finally arrived by 10:55am, so we had been stranded in an Express Lane watching cars fly by at 85mph for almost 2 and a half hours before we were able to move. After the first shop took a look and told me the engine was damaged and that they couldn't replace it, I had it towed to a Volvo dealership. 5 days and a $375 diagnostic later, they find that the turbocharger has an internal oil leak and that this and the catalytic converter would have to be replaced for $6k. Aside from now being carless 4 hours from the dealership and missing my wife's birthday celebration without refund, I now have a $6,375 bill that I had no way of preventing due to a manufacturing design flaw in 2012 Volvo S60 T5. I SHOULD have been warned of a low oil situation so I could have at least pulled over and properly tended to it. I SHOULD NOT have to be liable for a Volvo design flaw that may involve faulty piston rings that has apparently affected countless others. This incident put both my wife and I in danger on an Express Lane on a very busy highway. Volvo needs to be accountable for this design flaw.

It looks as if my car should have been included in the 62Vin recall for engine sensor not stating low oil. Car started to knock and shutoff with no warning for low oil pressure. Diagnostic show oil was issue but even when completely drained car still does not display low oil which caused motor to blow. Contacted volvo and they would not add vehicle to recalls even though car year manufactured period and engine vin matched recall.

When I first bought this Volvo there was condensation in both of the headlights then took it for a test drive and I really liked it and when I got back the dealer said if I was to buy it he would take care of both headlights so I assumed that he did but I bought it and left and was driving and then a code came on in the car saying low beam out I was like oh [XXX] so took it back to them they had me go buy $120 light bulb and that wasn't the problem they did some working and testing and said that it was the low beam ballast so I bought 1 for the drivers side and that fixed that problem but then not even a week later the same light came on saying low beam out, took it back and they said that it was the same thing on opposite side on passenger side so they said order the part and we'll fix it I did that took it back to them and they said it was fixed not even a day later and the light was back on swing low beam out I'm thinking that there is an issue that has to deal with some kind of recall with these lights cause there is no way that they should break that easy or quick so please get back to me and let me know thank you INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

This in regards to a vehicle I purchased on March 30, 2021. It is a 2012 Volvo S60 T5 VIN #[XXX]. When I purchased the car it had 99,489 miles on the odometer and when the vehicle became an issue it was at 104,409 miles on the odometer. I purchased it on Craigslist from a physician in Maine. On December 1, 2021 my husband was driving the vehicle on the highway and it stalled without warning after almost crashing. He was able to pull over, start the car back up and drive it home. There were no warning alerts or check engine light that came on the dashboard. After browsing the internet, we realized that the car had a recall due to an oil consumption level issue in 2014 (Recall #R29436; National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaign #13V592000). I contacted Volvo of North America who opened up a case (case #[XXX]) and then had the car towed to Portland Volvo in Scarborough, Maine for an appointment on December 14, 2021. On December 15, 2021 Portland Volvo informed us that the vehicle’s engine was beyond repair. When I purchased the 2012 volvo S60 back in June we started to drive and it said low beam out and later found out that it was the drivers side low beam took it back and they tried a new headlight but didn't work but we found the problem it was the ballast to the hid bulb was bad changed it bam fixed 2 days later the light came back on and said low beam out but this time it was the passenger side took it back and they checked and said that it was the samething the low beam hid ballast so got that they changed it and bam fixed well left there and less than a week later the light comes back in saying low beam out and only its the same side again this time the passenger side, so my question and concern is I can't ve the only one having this issue with my headlights causing me to drive with high beams on which isn't safe so please get back to me with an answer I believe there is something faulty with these S60 r-design hid low beam headlights please help

I had the car about 3 months from a dealership. I was driving through the hills near my house, at first no problem. After about 4 turns or so this red light would come on saying something like low oil pressure and the car would stall a bit til I was out of the turn. Didn’t say anything about needing oil or anything. I would have gone straight to a gas station had there been one. My only option was to turn around when I could at the bottom of the hill and go back. The car did the same thing on the way back. I got the car home without further problems parked it and planned to have it checked out first thing when a drove the car again. A couple days went by I decided it was time to have the car checked out. Got in the car started the car and the car started making an extreme rattling noise. I thought maybe something came loose I popped the hood and the rattling increased the the car stalled and stopped running before I got a chance to have it checked out. I started looking on line and found that the were hundreds of people with this same year make and model that the same happened to them . I tried to get my insurance to pay for it but they wouldn’t go for it. I went back online and learned that this issue is something Volvo knew about for many years and said it was limited to models 2012 with vin62 which my car is but only for like a three month period of time during 2012 . I thought they are obviously trying to limit the amount of responsibility they have to people like me who unknowingly purchased a Volvo expecting to have a quality car that would last many years. If you read the hundreds of blogs from people who’s cars engines failed exactly the way Volvo said of the cars Volvo was willing to recall and repair because it is Volvo’s responsibility to do so. I got lucky that the engine didn’t fail as I was driving through the hills. I and others could’ve been hospitalized or killed Thanks to Volvo only informing a very limited few of this issue

I was driving on my way back home. When my car started to knock. As I was slowing down to pull over. My oil pressure light came on. Granted, the reason was unknown. I had just recently checked the oil level. I got out to check the dipstick to find smoke coming out where the dipstick was. Curious as I was, I had no oil which left me puzzled. After some research, I found that my car had a recall on it for oil consumption. I called and asked a rep if they could verify if my vehicle was serviced for the issue. But without a doubt, he said it was. I just want to know if the problem was fixed. I currently can't crank my vehicle. I even dug into it myself and found that I had a bad starter nd battery. After replacing the two. I still can't get my vehicle to turn over. Any help would be much appreciated. Volvo arrived at the hiking trailhead parking lot at approximately 10 miles an hour, slowed down more to select parking space then turn right into space in front of a cement outhouse. Space had a cement parking block. As the car was about to come to a complete stop in the space, it suddenly accelerated on its own as if the accelerator was press all the way overcoming the cement block and crashing into the outhouse. Both driver and passenger airbags were deployed. The driver never took the foot off the brake when the car accelerated. The automated braking system never deployed. Prior to the accident, the low battery warning light was on but the battery was checked out by a professional to be fully charged. We walk away from the accident bruised with back and chest pains from the seat belt but considered ourselves lucky. Had we not parked with a cement outhouse five feet in front of us two spaces over, we would have accelerated into an open field and into a forest of trees.

THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A VOLVO DEALERSHIP WHICH REFUSED TO DIAGNOSE THE CAR. SO I GOT IT TOWED TO A CERTIFIED SHOP. I WAS TOLD THAT TWO CYLINDERS LOST PRESSURE AND I NEED A REPLACEMENT MOTOR. WHAT? I NEVER RECEIVED ANY WARNING LIGHTS , NO LOW OIL PRESSURE LIGHT. I FOLLOWED THE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE. HOW IS THIS . I'VE CONTACTED VOLVO AMERICA AND AM WAITING. I FIND IT STRANGE THAT THE VOLVO THAT I'VE BEEN USING FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS SUDDENLY REFUSED TO LOOK AT THE CAR. EXTREMELY HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION WAS EVENTUALLY DIAGNOSED BY DEALER AS DUE TO FAULTY PISTON RINGS, WHICH WERE REPLACED AT A HIGHLY-DISCOUNTED COST ON 1/17/20 AT 100,573 MILES. WHILE DRIVING THE CAR ON 1/16/21 (MILEAGE WAS THEN ABOUT 105,000 MILES) I GOT AN ALERT THAT THERE WAS NO OIL PRESSURE AND CAR SHOULD BE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY. LESS THAN 20 MILES LATER, AN ALERT SAID THE ENGINE WAS SHUTTING DOWN, AND THE CAR LIMPED TO A STALL AT THE SIDE OF A FREEWAY EXIT. CAR COULD NOT BE STARTED, AND WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. DEALER HAS ADVISED THAT THE ENGINE HAD FAILED AND COULD NOT BE REPAIRED.

THE CAR DISPLAYED A LOW OIL WARNING, SO I CHECKED AND THE OIL WAS A LITTLE LOW SO I ADDED A QUART. THE LIGHT DISAPPEARED. THE NEXT DAY, SAME THING HAPPENED, BUT OIL LEVEL WAS FULL. THE LIGHT AGAIN WENT OUT. LATER THAT DAY, THE LOW OIL LIGHT CAME BACK ON, SO I PULLED OVER AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY HOUSE. DECIDED TO CHANGE THE OIL, AND SAW METAL SHAVING IN THE FILTER. I DISASSEMBLED THE ENGINE AND METAL WAS EVERYWHERE. THE CULPRIT WAS A SHATTERED OIL PUMP, WHICH SPEWED METAL ALL INTO THE CRANKSHAFT AND BEARINGS. A QUICK SEARCH ONLINE FOUND NUMEROUS CASES SIMILAR TO MINE, WHERE THE ENGINE BLEW WITH NO TYPE OF WARNING OR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THIS WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE OIL PUMP THAT BREAKS DOWN AND SHATTERS INSIDE THE ENGINE BLOCK, CAUSING METAL TO ENTER THE ENGINE AND DESTROY IT.

EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION BETWEEN OIL CHANGE INTERVALS. SINCE THE PURCHASE OF THIS CAR (2/1/2016) I HAVE USED FULLY SYNTHETIC OIL (CASTROL). OIL LEVEL SLOWLY DROPS BETWEEN SCHEDULED OIL CHANGES. PRIOR TO THE LAST SCHEDULED OIL CHANGE (1/10/2020) I CHECKED THE OIL IT IT WAS VERY DANGEROUSLY LOW. THERE ARE NOT ( AS CERTIFIED BY ASE AUTO TECH AND CONFIRMED) NO EXTERNAL OIL LEAKS OR EVIDENCE OF OIL IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THIS CAR NOW HAS 84.000 MILES ON IT AND I'M AFRAID THAT IT WILL DAMAGE ITSELF EVEN ON THE SHORT COMMUTE MY WIFE HAS TO WORK. I CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE OIL LEVEL NOW ALMOST DAILY. I FEEL THIS IS (DAILY OIL CHECK) ABSURD AS CLEARLY, PER THE OWNERS MANUAL, DOES NOT NOR SHOULD NOT REQUIRE CHECKING AND REFILLING OIL THIS OFTEN. I UNDERSTAND THE FACT IN 2012 VOLVO ASSEMBLY SWITCHED MOTOR TYPES (62 TO 63?) DURING MIDRUN. INDICATIVE OF A PROBLEM OR ISSUE. I BELIEVE MY AUTO WAS INVOLVED. ALL SEEMS TO HAPPEN COMPLETELY RANDOMLY. SOME DAYS RADIO FUNCTIONS GREAT BUT SOME DAYS I CAN NOT LISTEN TO ANY AUDIO AT ALL. SOME DAYS MY PHONE CONNECTS TO BLUETOOTH WITHOUT ME EVEN TRYING TO CONNECT, AND SOME DAYS THE SATNAV RADIO DOES NOT CONNECT AT ALL. I HAVE EVEN GONE AS FAR AS TO RESET ALL NETWORK SETTINGS ON MY IPHONE AND REMOVE THE IPHONE FROM THE RECENT DEVICE LIST; STILL THE PHONE WILL NOT CONNECT TO THE CAR. THIS FAILURE PREVENTED ALL LOCKING AND LATCHING SAFETY FEATURES TO OPERATE. THIS CAUSED THE DOOR TO NOT LATCH OR LOCK ALLOWING THE DOOR TO OPEN DURING ANY TURN. UPON ARRIVAL AT THE MECHANIC'S SHOP THE DRIVER'S DOOR LOCK/LATCH FAILED IN THE SAME WAY. UPON REMOVAL OF THE PART IT WAS FOUND TO BE A FORD PART, NOT A VOLVO PART. THE MECHANIC CONTACTED VOLVO AND WAS ADVISED THAT VOLVO WAS AWARE OF THE FAILURES BUT IT HAD NOT BEEN MADE PUBLIC AND NO RECALL WAS IN AFFECT. A COMPLAINT WAS MADE BY ME TO VOLVO CORPORATE AND WAS TOLD TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A VOLVO DEALERSHIP. ALL INSTRUCTIONS WERE FOLLOWED. A VIDEO WAS MADE BY ME WITH MY 15 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER USING THE CAMERA IN A PARKING LOT. THIS VIDEO ILLUSTRATES THE UNSAFE DOOR LOCK/LATCH AND IT'S EXTREME DANGER TO THE PUBLIC AT LARGE, INCLUDING ANY PERSON THAT OWNS THIS MAKE AND MODEL OF VEHICLE. UPON THE LATCH/LOCK FAILURE, THE DOOR(S) ARE ALLOWED TO OPEN FREELY WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION AND THE AUTO AND MANUAL ELECTRIC LOCKS WILL NOT ENGAGE. THIS COULD CAUSE AN EJECTION OF THE VEHICLE'S DRIVER OR OCCUPANTS DURING EVEN A SLIGHT TURN. IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION THIS WOULD MOST LIKELY CAUSE THE EJECTION OF THE VEHICLE'S DRIVER AND OR OCCUPANTS. IF THE DOOR OPENS WHILE IN MOTION THE DOOR COULD STRIKE ANOTHER VEHICLE OR PEDESTRIAN CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. THIS DOOR LATCH/LOCK SHOULD BE RECALLED ON ALL VOLVO'S OF THIS YEAR AND MODEL FOR THE SAFETY OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND REPLACED WITH AN AUTHORIZED VOLVO PART THAT IS CERTIFIED AS SAFE. ONE WEEK LATER THE DRIVER'S DOOR LATCH/LOCK FAILED IN SAME WAY, WHICH ALLOWED DOORS TO FLY OPEN DURING A TURN WHILE VEHICLE IN GEAR AND IN MOTION. ELECTRIC DOOR LOCKS WOULD NOT ENGAGE. OPENING DOORS COULD BE STRUCK BY PASSING VEHICLES ENDANGERING LIVES OF OCCUPANTS. OCCUPANTS COULD BE THROWN OUT OF DOORS WHEN TURNING. UNABLE TO SECURE THE VEHICLE WHEN UNOCCUPIED. BOTH DOOR LATCHES ARE FORD PRODUCTS INSTALLED IN A VOLVO VEHICLE. SUBSTANDARD SAFETY DEVICE INSTALLED ON VEHICLE'S DOORS. NEARLY ENDLESS LIST OF SAFETY HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS DEFECT. VOLVO IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND FAILED TO DISCLOSE THE INFORMATION TO THE PUBLIC OR OWNERS OF THIS MAKE AND MODEL VOLVO, CAUSING THE OWNER OR OPERATOR TO BE UNAWARE OF THE POSSIBLE FATAL SAFETY HAZARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE LOCAL DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS SIMILAR TO AN UNKNOWN RECALL REGARDING THE ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING AND NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 11V303000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE). THE OIL WAS CHANGED AT 85,000 MILES. AT APPROXIMATELY 90,000 MILES, THE LOW OIL PRESSURE LIGHT FLASHED ON AND IMMEDIATELY DISAPPEARED WHEN MAKING TURNS. THE SENSOR LIGHT DID NOT REMAIN ON THE DASHBOARD. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF OIL LEAKING. AFTER A COUPLE OF DAYS, THE ENGINE BEGAN KNOCKING. THE OIL LEVEL WAS CHECKED AND WAS LOW. OIL WAS ADDED TO THE CAR. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE VOLVO DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK. THE DEALER REPRESENTATIVE STATED THAT NO WARNING LIGHT INDICATORS SHOWED DURING THE DIAGNOSTIC CHECK. THE ENGINE WAS STARVED OF OIL AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HE MENTIONED THAT FOR THIS MODEL AND YEAR, NEW VEHICLE OWNERS THAT STILL HAD A WARRANTY WERE ASKED TO COME IN AND HAVE PISTON O-RINGS REPLACED BECAUSE OF EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. WE WERE NOT MADE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE.

(THEY CHARGED ME $1,000) I DOVE IT FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AND THEN IT BROKE DOWN AGAIN ON THE INTERSTATE AND WAS TOWED BACK TO THE SAME DEALER. I WAS INFORMED THIS TIME THAT THE MOTOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND GAVE ME NO EXPLANATION AS TO WHY. (THEY SAID THEY WOULD PUT A USED ENGINE IN WITH 130K MILES FOR $10,000) I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENTLY OWNED VOLVO REPAIR SHOP TO HAVE THEM CHECK IT OVER. THEY ALSO AGREE THAT THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND SAID THAT THE VALVES ARE BENT.

IN AUGUST OF THIS PAST YEAR MY ENGINE SHUT DOWN AS MY WIFE AND I MADE A TURN. THURSDAY OF LAST WEEK THE SAME THING HAPPENED EXCEPT I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT. I AGAIN HAD IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC AND IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE ENGINE IS NOT GETTING ANY COMPRESSION. I THEN CALLED VOLVO WHO INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO FOR ME SINCE I HADN'T TAKEN THE VEHICLE IN TO A DEALER. I EXPLAINED THAT I LIVE OVER AN HOUR AWAY FROM THE CLOSEST DEALERSHIP AND ITS NOT FEASIBLE FOR ME TO TAKE MY CAR IN. I'M AFRAID TO SPEND ANY MORE MONEY ON A USED ENGINE ONLY TO HAVE IT SEIZE UP ON ME WITH NO WARNING. THIS IS THE SECOND ENGINE IN LESS THAN SIX MONTHS. I LOOKED ON THE INTERNET AND SAW THAT VOLVO HAD ISSUED A RECALL FOR CERTAIN 2012 S60 IN REGARDS TO THIS ISSUE. THE KEYLESS ENTRY FAILED ONE BY ONE. THE RIGHT FRONT FIRST, THEN THE LEFT FRONT DOOR. I WENT TO DEALER, ENDING UP PAYING MORE THAN 500 DOLLARS FOR FIXING IT. THEY SAID THAT IS CAUSED BY THE POOR DESIGN OF THE DOOR HANDLE WHICH ALLOWED THE WATER TO GET INSIDE AND TO DAMAGE THE SENSOR AND WIRES.

THERE IS NO SMOKE OR PUDDLES INDICATING BURNING OIL OR AN OIL LEAK. WE TRY TO KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THE OIL BECAUSE THE DEALER SAID SINCE IT'S A TURBO IT NEEDS EXTRA OIL BETWEEN CHANGES. ABOUT A YEAR AGO THE OIL TRAP WAS CHANGED BECAUSE IT WAS LEAKING. RECENTLY, THE CAR STARTED RUNNING ROUGH, LIKE IT NEEDED SPARK PLUGS,(THOUGH IT WAS NOT TIME) THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. WE FOUND OUT THE 5TH CYLINDER STOPPED FIRING AND I HAVE A WARPED HEAD NOW BECAUSE OF THE ENGINE GETTING TOO HOT. THE WEEK BEFORE, I COULD SMELL THE CAR WAS BURNING RICH, NOW I REALIZE IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE 5TH CYLINDER AND VERY LIKELY THE 'GUNK' FROM THE STOPPED UP OIL TRAP. I HAD JUST HAD A OIL CHANGE SEPT 2018. THE CAR STILL WOULD NOT START. I HAD TO GET A TOW TO A SHOP FOR FOREIGN CARS. MY DIAGNOSIS ENGINE LOCKED UP. THE INJECTORS 5 AND 6 WAS WIDE OPEN (HYDRO LOCKING ) FUEL HAD BEEN LEAKING EVERYWHERE EVEN IN MY OIL. THE PRICE WAS $1400.00 TO REPAIR.

MILEAGE ON THE CAR AT THE TIME WAS 43843. FAST FORWARD TO AUGUST 21, 2018, THE CAR BREAKS DOWN AGAIN ON CITY STREET. CURRENT MILEAGE IS 73114. THE BELT AGAIN BREAKS. HOWEVER, THIS TIME DEBRIS GOT INTO TIMING BELT GEARS. THIS CAUSED THE ENGINE TO JUMP TIME AND NOW VALVES ARE BENT. VOLVO DEALERSHIP QUOTED $~6000.00 TO REPAIR. I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AND DISCOVERED WITHIN 45 MILES OF DRIVING THE CAR THAT THERE WAS NO OIL IN THE VEHICLE. THE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT NEVER CAME ON NOR DID THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON. IT WASN'T UNTIL AFTER I ADDED 4QUARTZ OF OIL AND THE ENGINE QUIETED DOWN THAT THE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT CAME ON FOLLOWED BY A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND A NOTIFICATION SAYING TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY. THIS HAPPENED AS I WAS DRIVING MY CAR TO PEP BOYS TO SEE A MANAGER ABOUT THEM NOT PUTTING OIL IN THE CAR. I HAVE BEEN FIGHTING WITH PEP BOYS ON THE ISSUE FOR OVER A MONTH AND THE MECHANIC I HIRED HAS JUST POINTED OUT THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE ISSUE I AM HAVING WITH MY CAR. APPARENTLY VOLVO HAS HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE TIRE PRESSURE LIGHT NEVER COMING ON WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT I TOLD PEP BOYS THAT THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO INDICATION THAT THERE WAS NO OIL IN THE CAR UNTIL A KNOCKING SOUND HAD STARTED.

THE CAR WAS CONSUMING OIL AT A SHOCKING RATE - 12 QUARTS OVER THE COURSE OF 2 MONTHS AND THE OIL LIGHT DID NOT ILLUMINATE, EVEN WHEN THE ENGINE WAS COMPLETELY OUT OF OIL! I OPENED A CASE WITH VOLVO USA AT THE TIME AND WAS TOLD TO BRING THE CAR TO A DEALER. THE DEALER COULD NOT FIND A LEAK AND DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. I RETURNED TO THE DEALER AGAIN FOR THE SAME ISSUE AND IT WAS STILL NOT RESOLVED. A FEW WEEKS AFTER MY MOST RECENT VISIT TO THE DEALER, THE CAR MADE A LOUD NOISE WHILE IN TRAFFIC GOING ABOUT 30 MPH. THE CAR WAS DEAD IN THE MIDDLE OF ATLANTA TRAFFIC. IT TURNS OUT THE ENGINE "THREW A ROD" AND THE ENTIRE ENGINE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED ($11K)! THIS CAR HAS 78K MILES ON IT. I AGAIN REACHED OUT TO VOLVO USA AND WAS TOLD THAT ALL GOODWILL REPAIRS WERE AT THE DISCRETION OF THE DEALER AND THE DEALER DID NOT FEEL ANY ASSISTANCE WAS IN ORDER IN THIS CASE. AT THIS TIME I HAVE A VERY GOOD LOOKING AND EXPENSIVE BOAT ANCHOR IN MY DRIVEWAY. AFTER READING MANY SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE, I HAVE ONCE AGAIN REACHED OUT TO VOLVO USA FOR ASSISTANCE. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A PROBLEM WITH THE 2012 S60 T5 ENGINE.

MY VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A GROCERY STORE LOT. I ENTERED THE VEHICLE TO BACK IT OUT OF ITS PARKING SPOT. IT WAS NEXT TO A FULL SIZED VAN WHICH HAD CARPET CLEANING EQUIPMENT MOUNTED INSIDE. I STARTED THE CAR AND PLACED IT IN REVERSE AS IT BEGAN TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. I TRIED TO SLOW THE VEHICLE WITH THE BRAKE WHICH FAILED. I COLLIDED WITH A BLOCK WALL IN THE REAR OF THE CAR AND ATTEMPTED TO GET IT OUT OF GEAR, WITH THE SOLID JARRING FROM THE REAR THE CAR WENT INTO DRIVE AND CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE TO FULL SPEED, WHILE I WAS ATTEMPTING TO BRAKE. THE VOLVO HIT THE VAN WHICH IT HAD BEEN PARKED NEXT TO IN THE REAR LEFT BUMPER AND DROVE IT APPROXIMATELY 20 FEET THROUGH A PLANTER AND INTO A PARKING SPOT ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PLANTER. THIS CAR (VOLVO) IS EQUIPPED WITH A COLLISION WARNING SYSTEM THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE AUTO BRAKED AND DID NOT. ADDITIONALLY THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. I TOOK THE CAR TO VOLVO AND HAD THEM ATTEMPT TO PULL CODES FROM THE VEHICLES INFORMATION SYSTEM. THEY REPORTED THAT NO CODES WERE PRESENT AND ATTEMPTED TO EXPLAIN AWAY THE INCIDENT AS DRIVER ERROR. THE CAR WAS TOTALED IN THE PROCESS. I AM CERTAIN THAT THERE WAS NO DRIVER ERROR AND THAT WHAT HAPPENED WAS A SUDDEN UNEXPLAINED ACCELERATION. ON APRIL 12, 2016 I TOOK MY VOLVO S-60 LEASED BRAND NEW FROM VOLVO AND THE PURCHASED AT THE END OF THE LEASE AS A CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED CAR IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND A CHECK OIL LIGHT. VOLVO HAD A RECALL ON OIL PRESSURE CENSORS (THIS HAD CAUSED OTHER CAR ENGINES TO SEIZE SOMETHING THAT THE NTSB HAS REPORTED ON). THE VOLVO AUTHORIZED DEALER, HERB GORDON, CLAIMED TO HAVE MADE THIS REPAIR. HOWEVER ON JUNE 21, 2016, THE ENGINE SEIZED IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY ROAD. THE VOLVO AUTHORIZED DEALER DETERMINED IT NEEDED A NEW ENGINE, AT THE TIME, I ASKED ABOUT SIMPLY APPLYING THE COST TO REPLACE THE ENGINE (ABOUT $12,000) TO GETTING ME INTO A NEW CAR. VOLVO REFUSED AND WENT AHEAD WITH AN ENGINE REPLACEMENT (THEY HAD MY CAR FROM JUNE 21, 2016 TO AUGUST 1, 2016. THE CAR BROKE DOWN AGAIN ON AUGUST 15, 2016 WHILE MY FAMILY AND I WERE ON THE ROAD FOR A VACATION. THE CAR IS USING OIL LIKE CRAZY. GOING THRU 3-4 QUARTS EVERY 2000 MILES. STARTED AT 40541 WHEN SERVICED, THEY NOTED IT WAS A QUART LOW. I AM NOW AT 79000. & THE PROBLEM HAS JUST GOTTEN WORSE. I SPOKE TO DEALER ABOUT THIS & THEY ACTED AS IF THEY HAD NO IDEA WHAT IT COULD BE OR WHY. THEY AGREED TO DO OIL CONSUMPTION TEST (THEY SAID WAS THE NEXT STEP IN PROTOCOL) WHEN I TOLD THEM THAT I HAD READ THAT THIS WAS A MAJOR PROBLEM & I HAD COPY OF THE SERVICE BULLETIN THAT HAD BEEN ISSUED. THEY EVEN TOLD ME MINE WAS NOT INCLUDED, THAT THE T6 MODELS WERE THE ONES WITH THE ISSUE. THAT IS NOT TRUE. WHEN AT A FULL STOP, WITH FOOT ON THE BRAKE, ON A HILL AND IN GEAR (DRIVE) THE CAR ROLLS BACKWARDS WHEN REMOVING MY FOOT FROM THE BREAK PEDAL. THE TRANSMISSION DOES NOT ENGAGE UNLESS THE GAS PEDAL IS DEPRESSED. THE VOLVO OF SAN DIEGO "TECHNICIAN" CHECKED A 2013 VEHICLE WITH THE SAME TRANSMISSION AND FOUND THE SAME PROBLEM. UNFORTUNATELY, HE USED THIS TEST TO PROVE THAT THIS WAS NORMAL BEHAVIOR FOR THIS VEHICLE, AND THUS, THE TRANSMISSION WAS IN FINE CONDITION. .I DON'T SEE HOW A CAR ROLLING BACKWARDS WHILE IN A FORWARD GEAR COULD EVER BE CONSIDERED NORMAL BEHAVIOR. IT IS AT BEST, A DEFECT, AT WORST, A SAFETY ISSUE. VOLVO OF SAN DIEGO REFUSES TO FIX THE PROBLEM. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THIS CAR HAS ONLY 46,000 MILES, AND IS STILL UNDER FULL WARRANTY. THERE ARE OTHER ISSUES WITH THIS TRANSMISSION, BUT THEY ARE DIFFICULT TO DESCRIBE IN THIS FORMAT, BUT THE PROBLEMS WERE VERIFIED BY THE VOLVO OF SAN DIEGO PERSON WHO WENT ON THE TEST DRIVE WITH ME, ON JUNE 15TH, 2016. 2012 VOLVO S60. VEHICLE IS AT 64,114 MILES. ABOUT A WEEK AGO, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I NOTICED A HIGH PITCHED WHISTLE COMING FROM THE ENGINE WHEN DRIVING. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE MECHANIC AND HE STATED THAT A RUBBER DIAPHRAGM IN THE OIL TRAP HAD RUPTURED CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO GO ON FULL VACUUM AND IN-TAKE TOO MUCH AIR AND OIL. IN FACT, IT WAS TAKING IN SO MUCH OIL THAT THE OIL WAS NEARLY DEPLETED. HE STATED THAT HE HAS SEEN SIMILAR ISSUES WITH VOLVOS IN THE PAST. APPROXIMATELY 6 MONTHS AGO, I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALER FOR AN OIL SERVICE. AT THAT TIME, HE STATED THAT THE ENGINE'S OIL WAS ALMOST DEPLETED. I'M NOW BEGINNING TO SUSPECT THAT THE BROKEN DIAPHRAGM IS RELATED TO THAT ISSUE AS WELL. I'VE SEEN OTHER COMPLAINTS REGARDING DEPLETED OIL (AND THE LACK OF A DRIVER NOTIFICATION DUE TO A MALFUNCTIONING OIL SENSOR). THIS COULD POTENTIALLY BE THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE OIL DEPLETION IN THESE OTHER CASES AS WELL.

THIS WAS LATER FOUND OUT TO BE DUE TO NO COMPRESSION IN CYLINDER #3. THE VALVES, VALVE GUIDES, AND BEARINGS IN THE ENGINE WERE DESTROYED BY OVERHEATING DUE TO LOW OIL PRESSURE. MY 2012 VOLVO S60 HAD SERIOUS ENGINE NOISE BROUGHT TO THE SHOP THEY THOUGHT IT MIGHT OF BEEN THE FACT THAT I HAD LOW OIL, BUT I HAD JUST GOTTEN MY OIL CHANGED 12/17/14 AND IT WAS 5/27/15 NOW AND I HAD NOT DRIVEN ANYWHERE CLOSE TO 6 THOUSAND MILES TO DEPLETE ALL THE OIL. THAT EVENING I GOT A CALL FROM THE SHOP AGAIN TELLING ME THAT THERE WAS A SERIOUS PROBLEM. THEY TOLD ME BECAUSE MY CAR WAS DANGEROUSLY LOW ON OIL IN FACT 3 QUARTS LOW THAT THE ENGINE FOR THAT FACT HAD NOT GOTTEN ANY OIL, THIS IN TURN CASED THE BARRING AND THE CRANK SHAFT THE BE DAMAGED SO BAD THAT THEY SHOP TO ME THAT IF BASICALLY BEYOND REPAIR AND I WOULD NEED TO GET A NEW ENGINE. UPON RESEARCHING THE INTERNET I CAME ACROSS A STRING OF RECALLS FOR MY CAR, IT STATED THAT THE VOLVO'S SOFTWARE HAD A PROBLEM WHICH PREVENTED THE LOW ENGINE OIL LIGHT FROM COMING OUT AND IN DECEMBER 2013 THEY STARTED A RECALL. I CHECK THE WEBSITE AND GOT THE NUMBER TO VOLVO OF NORTH AMERICA AND CALLED AND WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR WAS ONE OF THE VEHICLES THAT WAS RECALLED. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THEY PROBLEM WAS FIXED BY A SIMPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT IN THEIR RECORDS MY CAR WAS TAKEN INTO VOLVO AND THE UPDATE WAS APPLIED TO MY CAR FIXING THE PROBLEM. I TOLD THE REPRESENTATIVE ON THE PHONE THAT IF THIS WAS THE CASE THEN IT MUST OF NOT WORKED BECAUSE MY CAR WAS IN THE SHOP WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM THAT VOLVO'S WEBSITE DESCRIBED AND ALSO NO "LOW ENGINE OIL" LIGHT EVER CAME ON.

ON JUNE 1ST ANOTHER CAR FAILED TO YIELD THE RIGHT OF WAY AND PULLED INTO THE PATH OF MY CAR WHILE I WAS GOING APPROX. 45MPH. I HIT THE BRAKES HARD AND TURNED TO THE LEFT TO TRY AND AVOID THE CAR AND COLLIDED WITH THE OTHER CAR. I ESTIMATE THE SPEED OF AT LEAST 35MPH AT IMPACT. THE RIGHT FRONT OF THE CAR TOOK MOST OF THE IMPACT. THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED AND BURNED MY ARM. HOWEVER, DESPITE THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR TAKING THE BRUNT OF THE IMPACT, THE PASSENGER AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. THE PASSENGER (MY FIANC) WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A CONCUSSION DUE TO THIS ACCIDENT. I BELIEVE THE CONCUSSION MAY HAVE BEEN AVOIDED HAD HER AIRBAG DEPLOYED. VOLVO INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND CLAIMS FOR SOME REASON THE AIRBAG SHOULD NOT HAVE DEPLOYED IN THIS ACCIDENT. ON AUGUST 24, 2013, I WAS INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT. A CAR STOPPED SHORT ON THE HIGHWAY. THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME HIT THAT CAR. I THEN HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I HAD ONLY A FEW SECONDS TO REACT. ANOTHER CAR THEN RE-ENDED ME. MY AIRBAG NOR SEATBELT PRETENTIONERS DEPLOYED. I HAD DIFFICULTY TURNING THE CAR OFF. THE CAR WAS TOTALED. WITHIN A FEW WEEKS OF THE INCIDENT, I REPORTED THE MATTER TO VOLVO. THEY SENT AN INVESTIGATOR OUT. VOLVO CLAIMS THAT SENSORS WERE NOT ACTIVATED SINCE THE DAMAGE WAS ABOVE THEM, AND THERE WAS NOT ANY PROBLEM. HOWEVER, AT THE SPEED I HIT, THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR WHY THE AIRBAGS SHOULD NOT HAVE DEPLOYED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 VOLVO S60. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THERE WAS A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND THE REAR END SPUN UNCONTROLLABLY. THE DYNAMIC TRACTION CONTROL FAILED TO ACTIVATE AND THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE CURBSIDE, CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER'S SIDE WHEEL RIMS. IN ADDITION, THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE RIM AND FRONT BUMPER WAS DAMAGED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE CAR WAS PURCHASED NEW FROM AN AUTHORIZED VOLVO DEALER. AFTER LITTLE OVER 12K MILES, THERE IS SEVER PAINT DAMAGE ON THE ENTIRE SURFACE OF THE CAR. THE PAINT APPEARS TO BE BUBBLING FROM UNDERNEATH. REQUIRES $8609.66 TO REPAIR. VOLVO ONLY WARRANTY THE PAINT FOR 12K MILES BUT ADVERTISES THE CAR HAVING 48 MONTH 50K MILES WARRANTY. THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL IN MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN OCCASIONALLY MALFUNCTIONING (ABOUT 10-15 TIMES SINCE PURCHASING MY VEHICLE IN MAY) CAUSING IT TO APPLY THE PARKING BRAKE AT SPEEDS OF ABOUT 5 MPH. THIS IS THE SECOND OCCASION ON WHICH THIS DEFECT HAS APPEARED, THE PRIOR INCIDENT HAPPENING IN APPROXIMATELY MARCH 2012, AT A MILEAGE OF APPROXIMATELY 5000 MILES. I HAVE OWNED THE CAR FOR JUST UNDER SIX MONTHS. I LIVE IN A SOUTHEASTERN US STATE AND TRAVELLED TO MY SECOND HOME IN FLORIDA. THE CAR HAS BEEN PARKED IN FLORIDA FEWER THAN 20 TOTAL DAYS. ON BOTH OF THE LAST TWO OCCASIONS DURING WHICH THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN FLORIDA, AN ANIMAL WAS APPARENTLY ABLE TO CLIMB DEEP INTO THE UNDERBODY OF THE CAR AND CHEW ON WIRES CONTROLLING THE DYNAMIC TRACTION STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM, THE ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEM, THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM, AND THE VOLVO CITY SAFETY CRASH AVOIDANCE SYSTEM. ON BOTH OCCASIONS, THE INTERNAL CAR ALERT SYSTEM DETECTED THE PROBLEM, ALERTED ME, AND VOLVO AGREED TO COVER THE COST OF THE REPAIRS, THOUGH TODAY, ON THE SECOND OCCASION, VOLVO INDICATED THEY WILL NOT COVER THIS FORM OF DAMAGE IN THE FUTURE. I PROPOSED TO BOTH MY VOLVO DEALERSHIP AND TO THE NATIONAL VOLVO CUSTOMER CARE CENTER THAT AN APPROPRIATE FORM OF SHIELDING SHOULD BE ADDED TO COVER THE WIRES CONTROLLING THESE SYSTEMS TO PREVENT AN ANIMAL'S ACCESS TO THEM. TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, THIS SUGGESTION WAS IGNORED, AS NO SPECIAL SHIELDING WAS DESCRIBED/OFFERED, DESPITE THE CRITICAL NATURE OF THESE SYSTEMS. THIS PROBLEM HAS NEVER OCCURRED WITH EITHER OF THE OTHER TWO VEHICLES WHICH I REGULARLY TAKE TO THE SAME LOCATION, THUS, I BELIEVE THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW IN WHICH EITHER THE MATERIALS USED IN THESE WIRING SYSTEMS ARE PARTICULARLY ATTRACTIVE TO WHATEVER ANIMAL CHEWED THE WIRES (E.G. SOY-BASED WIRE COATING POLYMERS PERHAPS), OR MORE LIKELY, THE WIRES ARE NOT SUFFICIENTLY SHIELDED/JACKETED TO PREVENT SUCH DAMAGE. IN EACH CASE, SINCE THERE WAS NOT A NEARBY VOLVO DEALERSHIP, I DROVE MY VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP FROM WHICH I PURCHASED IT WITHOUT FUNCTIONAL SAFETY SYSTEMS.

THE ACTIVE CRUISE CONTROL STOPS FOR NO REASON. THIS PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT. ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS (~20 TIMES SINCE I PICKED UP THE CAR), THE CAR SLOWS DOWN AS THE TRAFFICS SLOWS DOWN. THE CAR IS ALMOST AT A STOP (5-10 MPH) AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKES COMES ON, THE CARS BRAKES HARD & STOPS AND THE PARKING BRAKE TURNS ON. THE ALERT "CRUISE CONTROL UNAVAILABLE" SHOW IN THE DISPLAY.
