Takata recall. The contact owns a 2001 Volvo S80. The contact received a notification for NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V766000 (Air Bags). The dealer had been notified about the recall; however, the contact was informed that the part was not yet available. The manufacturer was then notified and informed him that they were unaware of when the parts may have become available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnection.

MY CAR LURCHES FORWARD WHEN YOU ARE IDLING AS WELL AS DRIVING. I WAS ON A BUSY STREET WHEN I PULLED OUT INTO AN ONCOMING LINE OF TRAFFIC WHEN THE MOTOR COMPLETELY DIED LEAVING ME IN THE MIDDLE OF BOTH LANES OF TRAFFIC. AFTER A TIME I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THIS HAS ALSO HAPPENED IN BUMPER TO BUMPER HIGHWAY TRAFFIC. AS YOU ARE IDLING AT AN INTERSECTION OR AWAITING A TRAIN TO PASS, THE MOTOR RACES AND THEN SLOWS AND ALSO LURCHES AHEAD. FOOT MUST BE HARD ON THE BRAKE OR I COULD REAR END THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. THIS VEHICLE HAS ONLY ABOUT 65,000 MILES AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THIS IS HAPPENING. IT HAS BEEN A GREAT CAR UNTIL THIS STARTED HAPPENING. THE CAR IS NOW SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY AS AN UNSAFE CONDITION IS CAUSED BY THIS MALFUNCTION.

ON NOVEMBER 9TH MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 2001 VOLVO S80 TO CHURCH. SHE PARKED THE CAR BUT IT BEGAN TO MOVE. IT ACCELERATED AND SHE WOUND UP DRIVING INTO A TREE TO AVOID HITTING OTHER CARS. SHE WAS ALSO WORRIED THAT CHILDREN FROM THE SCHOOL MIGHT BE AROUND. THE CAR WAS IN PARK. THE ENGINE WAS OFF. THE EMERGENCY BREAK WAS ON. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS TIGHT, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO STEER SINCE THE ENGINE WAS OFF. THE CHURCH SECRETARY OBSERVED THE INCIDENT. SHE SAW SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE BACK OF THE CAR WHICH WOULD INDICATE THE EMERGENCY BREAK WAS ON. WHEN SHE FIRST REACHED THE CAR WITH MY WIFE IN IT SHE NOTED THAT THE CAR WAS IN PARK.

TAKATA RECALL" FRIST I CALLED VOLVO TO INQUIRE ABOUT RECALLS REFERENING TO THE COOLING SYSTEM AND THE FUEL PUMP THE FIRST LADY I SPOKE WITH INFORMED ME THIS PROBLEM WAS UNDER RECALLS AND TO TAKE MY CAR TO GET IT SERVICED AT THE NEAREST DEALER AFTER TAKING MY CAR TO THE DEALER AT 7:15AM 4HOURS LATER AFTER I CALLED THEM FIRST THEY NOW ARE SAYING THAT THERE ISN'T ANYTHING THEY CAN DO WITH MY CAR AND THEY DO NOT KNOW WHO TOLD ME THAT FALSE INFORMATION. ON TOP OF ALL OF THIS MY CAR ACCELERATES BY ITSELF LUCKY WHEN IT HAPPENS I HURRY AND PUSH THE BRAKES AND THE CAR DOSENT START UP ONCE TURNING THE KEY EVEN THE GUY SAY THAT'S ALWAYS BEEN A PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE THEN ACTIVATED IN LIMP MODE AND STOPPED RUNNING. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 06V441000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) THAT DEALT WITH THE DIRTY THROTTLE HOUSING. THE RECALL REPAIR CONSISTED OF A SOFTWARE UPGRADE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, BUT THE VEHICLE EXCEEDED THE WARRANTY STIPULATIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 87,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 06V441000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 170,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 170,200.

MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON. I TOOK MY CAR TO MY MECHANIC WHO INFORMED ME THE CODE WAS FOR THROTTLE BODY POSITION SENSOR AND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL. I CALLED THE VOLVO DEALER AND ASKED THEM ABOUT IT. THEY SAID, YES THERE WAS A RECALL FOR SOFTWARE AND THAT MY VEHICLE HAD GOTTEN THE UPGRADE. I ASKED IF THERE WAS ANYTHING ELSE THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT, THE EMPLOYEE IN VOLVO SERVICE SAID NO. I RECEIVED THE SAME ANSWER WHEN I ASKED THEM IN PERSON. ON MARCH 1, 2011, NEARLY A YEAR LATER, I ASKED ANOTHER MECHANIC, WHO INFORMED ME THAT IF THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE DIDN'T WORK, THE DEALER WAS SUPPOSED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE THROTTLE BODY. I CALLED THE ANOTHER VOLVO DEALER WHO INFORMED ME THAT YES, THIS WAS THE CASE. MY CAR WAS ONE DAY OUT OF COVERAGE FOR THE RECALL NOW. AND SOMETIME WITHIN THE YEAR MY COMPUTER WAS RESET AND THE PROBLEM CODE FOR THE THROTTLE BODY IS GONE. I AM UPSET BECAUSE WHEN IT WAS A PROBLEM FOR ME, THE FIRST DEALER GAVE ME THE INCORRECT INFORMATION ABOUT THE RECALL. I WAS DRIVING FOR A LONG TIME WITH MY CAR IN LIMP MODE AND A MALFUNCTIONING THROTTLE BODY. I AM SURE THAT THE DEALER WAS OBLIGATED TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY, SINCE IT IS PART OF THE ACCELERATION SYSTEM. I'VE TAKE GOOD CAR, BUT THESE LARGE TICKET ITEMS CONTINUE. THERE ARE ALWAYS LIGHTS OUT SOMEWHERE ON THIS CAR. ONE OF THE TIRE RIMS CRACKED AND I NEED A NEW ONE (DANGEROUS TO DRIVE HIGHWAY WITH THAT). I DID NOT THINK VOLVO WOULD EXCEPT SOMETHING LIKE THIS, WHEN I BROUGHT THE CAR TO GENGRIS VOLVO DEALER THEY TOLD ME THAT THAT 'WOULD NOT TOUCH' THIS CAR AND TRADE-IN WAS NOT AN OPTION. YESTERDAY THE CAR JUST QUIT MOVING. IT WAS TOWED TO THE VOLVO DEALER AND I WAS JUST TOLD THE TRANSMISSION IS SHOT AND WOULD COST $4000 TO REPLACE WITH A REMANUFACTURED ONE. I WAS DRIVING APPROX. 65 MILES AN HOUR ON I395 AND I WAS IN THE PASSING LANE. I WENT TO ACCELERATE AND MOVE INTO THE TRAVEL LANE AND I WAS NOT ABLE TO ACCELERATE. MY SPEED STARED TO REDUCE AND ALL OF THE POWER SHUT OFF IN THE VEHICLE. NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND NO INDICATION ON WHAT THE CAR WAS SHUTTING DOWN. I CHECKED FOR VEHICLES BEHIND ME AND AROUND ME AND PUT ON MY HAZARD LIGHTS. I QUICKLY PULLED OFF OF THE BUSY HIGHWAY AND MANAGED TO STOP AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD (MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY - NEXT TO THE MEDIAN). THE POLICE HAD SEEN ME PULL OVER AND CALLED A WRECKER SERVICE. THE CAR WAS BROUGHT TO THE PLACE WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE (FOREIGN MOTORS EAST IN BROOKLYN, CT) AND THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR THE NEXT 3 DAYS. WE BEGAN REPORTING PROBLEMS WITH HESITATION AND SURGING IN OUR 2001 S80 T6 SEVERAL YEARS AGO TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT OUR NEAREST DEALER, SILL TERHAR MOTORS IN BROOMFIELD, COLORADO. THEY TRIED REPLACING A TURBO VALVE AND A SOFTWARE UPGRADE THAT WAS AVAILABLE AT THE TIME, AND WE WERE TOLD THAT USING THE HIGHEST OCTANE FUEL WOULD BE NECESSARY IN ORDER TO PREVENT THE HESITATION. THE PROBLEM CONTINUED. GIVEN THE INCONVENIENCE OF THE DEALERS LOCATION AND THAT THEY HAD NOT SEEMED TO BE ABLE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, WE HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICED FOR A WHILE AT AN INDEPENDENT VOLVO MECHANIC. LAST FALL THE EMISSIONS AND CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS TURNED ON, AND THEY REPLACED AN OXYGEN SENSOR AND/OR MASS AIR SENSOR. THE WARNING LIGHTS TURNED ON AGAIN, AND THEY RECOMMENDED THAT WE GO TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE DEALER. WE LEARNED OF THE "EXTENDED WARRANTY" VOLVO WAS BEGINNING TO OFFER AS A RESULT OF THE PROBLEMS IN THE DESIGN OF THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE. IN EARLY DECEMBER WE LEFT THE VEHICLE WITH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT SILL TERHAR, AND THEY DID THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE. WITHIN DAYS THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING HORRIBLY AND WAS STALLING IN INTERSECTIONS. SILL TERHAR HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED AND REPORTED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO A HOSE THAT HAD NOT BEEN FASTENED SECURELY. DUE TO TRAVEL DURING THE HOLIDAYS AND THE MULTIPLE SNOWSTORMS IN COLORADO IN LATE DECEMBER, WE DROVE THIS VEHICLE IN EARLY JANUARY AFTER HAVING PUT ONLY ABOUT 100 MILES ON THE VEHICLE SINCE THE TIME THAT IT WAS REPORTEDLY FULLY CLEARED OF PROBLEMS WITH REGARD TO THE ETM, THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT TURNED ON AGAIN. THE VEHICLE'S ENTIRE HEATING SYSTEM), IN-CAR SENSOR FAILURE FOR INTERIOR AIR QUALITY , ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE FAILURE THAT CAUSED ME TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP FOR $190, CATALYTIC CONVERTER FAILURE, OXYGEN SENSOR FAILURE, THE FRONT STRUTS AND MOUNTS NEED TO BE REPLACED, YET. MAINTENANCE WISE, THE 60K MAINTENANCE, WHICH THE DEALERSHIP NEVER MENTIONED THAT IT HAD BEEN COMPLETED ON THIS VEHICLE ( NO PAPER WORK FOR THE VEHICLE WAS PROVIDED TO ME AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE), THE BRAKES WENT BAD IN TWO WEEKS AFTER PURCHASE, THE TIRES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, TOTAL COST: AROUND $2,000. I DON'T KNOW WHAT MORE TO EXPECT TO HAVE GONE WRONG ON THIS VEHICLE. THIS CAR HAS PUT ME THROUGH LOTS OF STRESS, WASTE OF TIME, AND LOSS OF MONEY. ALL SYMPTOMS WERE PRESENT UPON TAKING TO THE DEALER BASED ON SOME WEB RESEARCH TO IDENTIFY TO PROBLEM. I REQUESTED A CONFERENCE WITH THE TECHNICIAN, AND A REVIEW OF THE DIAGNOSTICS REPORT. THE END RESULT WAS A MAF REPLACEMENT PAID FOR BY ME (CUSTOMER) AND AMAZINGLY THE TECH NOTES RECOMMENDED CLEANING OF THE CRANKCASE VENTILATION SYSTEM AND THE ETM CLEANING WHICH WAS COVERED BY THE DEALER. WELL, WELL - LET'S SEE, I BOUGHT A 2001 VOLVO S-80, T-6 IN FEBRUARY 2005 TO REPLACE MY 1996 740 IL BMW - I THOUGHT I WOULD GET A MORE ECONOMICAL AND SAFE CAR. BOY WAS I WRONG! TO MY DISGUST I PAID ALMOST $20,000 FOR THIS USED CAR AND WITHIN WEEKS IT STARTED ACTING UP. IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR AND THE THROTTLE BODY. I FINALLY - 9 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR - HAVE HAD TO GET IT FIXED - OVER $1200.00. I, LIKE ANOTHER PERSON WHO FILED A COMPLAINT, WAS MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN ON A VERY BUSY ROAD, AND THE CAR DIED WHILE IN THE MIDDLE OF MY TURN. ETM BAD/ ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE THIS HAS BEEN A NIGHTMARE AND IT'S NOT RESOLVED YET! I BOUGHT MY USED VOLVO S-80 T6 OCTOBER 20 TH WITH 76,000 MILES. WITHIN THE DAY OF OWNERSHIP THE SERVICE ENGINE REQUIRED LIGHT CAME ON, AND I FAILED MASS INSPECTION. I TRIED TO GET MY MONEY BACK, BUT I BOUGHT OUT OF STATE, AND THEY REFUSE TO RETURN CALLS. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND FOUND IT WAS THE ETM. ON WEDNESDAY NOV 10TH 2005, I CALLED MY LOCAL DEALER PIONEER VOLVO IN SOUTH DEERFIELD MASS 1 800 680 2140, AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE ETM WARRANTY EXPIRED AT 70,000 MILES, AT 76,000 MILE, THERE WAS NO WARRANTY. I ASKED HIM ABOUT KNOWN PROBLEMS WITH THE ETM, AND DENIED THAT HE WAS AWARE OF ANY! I ASKED HIM FOR AN APPOINTMENT, EXPLAINED THAT HE IS THE CLOSEST DEALER AT 47 MINUTES AWAY, AND THAT I NEEDED HELP ASAP DUE TO FAILED EMISSIONS. PURCHASED 2001 VOLVO S80 ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF AGO. IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS THE VEHICLE HAS DEVELOPED AN ENGINE SURGE AND ON TWO OCCASIONS HAS SIMPLY LOST POWER WHILE TRAVELING AT 55 MILES PER HOUR. BOTH TIMES A MESSAGE WAS DISPLAYED STATING REDUCED PERFORMANCE BUT THE VEHICLE HAD NO POWER AT ALL. AFTER PULLING ON TO THE SHOULDER I WAS ABLE TO GET IT STARTED AGAIN. THE PROBLEM HAS SUBSEQUENTLY BEEN DIAGNOSED AS THE ETM. THE CAR IS NOW PARKED WHILE I TRY TO RAISE THE MONEY TO HAVE IT FIXED. WEEK OF 10/10/05 AS TRAVELING UPHILL, MY CAR SPUTTERED AND LOSS POWER. AFTER NEARLY BEING REAR ENDED ON THE BUSY ROAD, I WAS ABLE TO LIMB MY CAR INTO A PARKING LOT AND TURN OFF THE ENGINE. AFTER A FEW MINUTES, I WAS ABLE TO RESTART MY CAR AND CONTINUE DRIVING. TODAY, 10/18/05, AS I WAS ENTERING I-85, MY CAR ONCE AGAIN SPUTTERED AND STALLED. THE ENTRANCE RAMP WAS DOWNHILL, SO I WAS ABLE TO COAST INTO THE EMERGENCY LANE AS TRACTOR TRAILERS AND CARS WHIZZED BY ME. I RESTARTED THE CAR AFTER A FEW MINUTES OF BEING TURNED OFF. I WENT TO A MECHANIC FRIEND AND HE TOLD ME THAT IT WAS PROBABLY THE ETM AND IF IT WAS NOT, IT WOULD BE THE NEXT TIME THE CAR BREAKS DOWN. HE COULD NOT REPAIR IT. HE ESTIMATED THE DEALERSHIP WOULD CHARGE ME $1200.00. HE REPORTED THAT HE SEES THIS AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH IN VOLVOS. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER. AN HOUR AND A HALF LATER, I WAS INFORMED MY ETM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THE COST WOULD BE $1150.00. I RELUNCTANTLY AGREED TO THE REPAIR. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE ETM PROBLEM OVER THE INTERNET AND HAVE LEARNED THAT VOLVO KNEW OF THIS PROBLEM YEARS BEFORE THEY SOLD THE CAR TO ME. AT A PERSONAL LEVEL, I HAD TO PAY FOR A DEFECTIVE PART THAT VOLVO HAS KNOWN IT HAS A 94%-100% FAILURE RATE! AT A MUCH HIGHER LEVEL, VOLVO IS RISKING PEOPLE LIVES BY NOT INFORMING OR VOLUNTARILY RECALLING THIS DEFECTIVE PART. CARS STALL UNEXPECTIVELY. I WAS FORTUNATE THAT I WAS NOT ON THE INTERSTATE YET. WE OWN A 2001 VOLVO S80 WITH AN ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE PROBLEM THAT WE ATTEMPTED TO HAVE THE VOLVO DEALER FIX IN AUGUST 04. THE CAR HAD 98,000 MILES ON IT AT THAT TIME. THE DEALER CLAIMED TO NOT BE AWARE OF ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE ETM, BUT THAT THEY COULD ATTEMPT TO CLEAN THE SYSTEM, WHICH THEY PROCEEDED TO DO AT $566. THE PROBLEM WASN'T FIXED, BUT THE DEALER SAID THEY COULD NOW FIX THE PROBLEM FOR AN ADDITIONAL $1000. THIS REALLY IRKED ME, I NEVER WENT BACK, NOW IT IS A YEAR LATER AND THE CAR STILL IS NOT FIXED, BUT IT WON'T PASS INSPECTION UN TIL IT IS CORRECTED. I'VE VISITED SEVERAL NON-DEALER MECHANICS WHO HAVE ALL SAID THEY CAN'T FIX THE PROBLEM, SO I'M STUCK HAVING TO GO BACK TO A DEALER WHO HAS TRIED TO SWINDLE ME. I RECENTLY BECAME AWARE OF THE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM WITH THE VOLVOS, BUT I REFUSE TO HAVE THE UNTRUSTWORTHY AND "UNKNOWING" VOLVO DEALERSHIP TOUCH THE CAR. I NOW HAVE FOUND A MECHANIC WHO FORMALLY WORKED FOR VOLVO ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE CAR. IT WILL PROBABLY COST ME DOULBE WHAT THE VOLVO MECHANIC HAS SAID IT WOULD, BUT THERE IS NO FAITH IN THE DEALERSHIP. MY 2001 VOLVO S80 WITH 43,000 MILES WAS LURCHING SO BADLY THAT I HAD TO RIDE THE BRAKE PEDAL TO KEEP THE CAR UNDER CONTROL. ON 6-9-05, I TOOK THE CAR TO THE VOLVO DEALER IN SANTA ANA, CA WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. I WAS TOLD THAT THEIR DIAGNOSTIC SOFTWARE SHOWED THAT I HAD A THROTTLE PROBLEM; I WAS CHARGED (AS I'M OUT OF WARRANTY) FOR THE DIAGNOSIS AND CLEANING OF THE THROTTLE. I TOLD THE SERVICE PERSONNEL AT THE DEALERSHIP THAT I UNDERSTOOD THAT CLEANING THE ETM WOULD ONLY BE A TEMPORARY FIX FOR THIS EMISSION PART AND THAT VOLVO NEEDED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THEIR ELECTRONIC THROTTLE IS AN INHERENT PROBLEM IN ALL 1999, 2000 AND 2001 SERIES 60, 70, 80 MODELS (WITH GAS ENGINES) AND ETMS NEED TO BE REPLACED. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, IT'S BEEN SHOWN THAT VOLVO KNEW ABOUT THIS WHOLE ETM ISSUE IN 1998 BEFORE THE FIRST CARS WERE SOLD. A REDESIGN TO ELIMINATE THE FAILURE PRONE POTENTIOMETER THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR WOULD HAVE FIXED THIS ISSUE. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE ETMS IN NEWER MODEL VOLVOS NOW USE A HALL EFFECT SENSOR WHICH IS A NON CONTACTING DEVICE, MEANING VOLVO KNOWS HOW TO MAKE A NON CONTACTING UNIT. PLEASE ADVISE HOW TO GET VOLVO TO RE-CALL THE CARS IN QUESTION AS THEY ARE NOT SAFE. LIKE MANY VOLVO OWNERS, WE BOUGHT THIS CAR FOR IT'S SAFETY. THE VEHICLE ALL OF A SUDDEN JUST STOPPED RUNNING. LUCKILY THE ITEM WAS REPAIRED, STILL UNDER WARRANTY. THIS SAME PART FAILED FOR THE SECOND TIME 9/4/2004. REPLACED AGAIN AFTER HAVING IT TOWED FROM RESIDENCE TO VOLVO OF LAS VEGAS. SMELL OF GAS AND ENGINE SURGE OCCURRED PRIOR TO STALLING. BROUGHT INTO VOLVO OF LAS VEGAS 9/2/2005 TO HAVE CHECKED FOR ENGINE SURGE AND SPORADIC RPM SURGES. I INFORMED THEM THAT IT IS PROBABLY THE MAF AND OR THE THROTTLE UNIT, VOLVO OF LAS VEGAS SAYS THAT NOTHING IS WRONG. HOWEVER, I HAD TO PAY $105.00 FOR LABOR WITH NO RESOLVE. WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, A MESSAGE CAME UP ON THE INDICATOR (PERFORMANCE REDUCED." THE ENGINE STARTED "MISSING" BADLY AND WITHIN 30 SECONDS STOPPED, LOSING POWER STEERING, POWER BRAKES, AND THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE, CREATING A DEFINITE SAFETY HAZARD FOR ME AS WELL AS OTHER CARS ON THE ROAD. I MANAGED TO ROLL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, OUT OF TRAFFIC. AFTER ABOUT FIFTEEN MINUTES THE CAR STARTED AGAIN. I DROVE HOME AND MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE VOLVO DEALER (VOLVO OF LANGHORNE, LANGHORNE, PA 215-741-1400) FOR THE NEXT DAY. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN AND WITHIN A HALF HOUR, THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A "THROTTLE BODY" (ETM) FAILURE WITH NO OPTION OTHER THAN TO REPLACE IT AS THE CAR WILL NOT RUN PROPERLY IF AT ALL WITHOUT THE REPAIR. THE REPAIR COST $1005.99. THERE IS NO WAY A MAJOR COMPONENT SUCH AS THIS SHOULD FAIL WITH LESS THAN 58,000 MILES (57911 AT THE TIME OF THE REPAIR). A BRIEF SEARCH OF THE INTERNET REVEALED THAT THIS PARTICULAR COMPONENT IS VERY FAILURE PRONE, CERTAINLY WELL OUTSIDE WHAT COULD BE CONSIDERED ACCEPTABLE. AT APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, MY VOLVO 2001 S80 SEDAN EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER WITH AN INSTRUMENT INDICATION OF "REDUCED POWER". I OWN A 2001 VOLVO S80. I HAVE HAD TROUBLE WITH THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE NOT RESPONDING TO THE THROTTLE INPUTS AND SURGING AT IDLE. IT WOULD SOMETIMES KILL THE CAR WITHOUT WARNING WHEN COMING TO A STOP (LOSING POWER-STEERING WHILE IN TURNS) OR MAKE THE CAR LUNGE FORWARD UNEXPECTEDLY. THE LUNGING FORWARD HAS ALMOST CAUSED ACCIDENTS AT INTERSECTIONS. I'VE BEEN LUCKY FOR NOW, BUT I WILL NOT LET MY WIFE DRIVE THE CAR WHILE IT IS DOING THIS BECAUSE SHE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR WITHOUT POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. I TOOK IT IN FOR REPAIR AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE, AND THEY NEED REPLACING AFTER A WHILE, SO I REPLACED IT. 4 MONTHS LATER, I'M EXPERIENCING THE SAME IDLE PROBLEMS AS WELL AS THE LUNGING PROBLEMS. I AM BEING TOLD THAT IT IS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE THROTTLE MODULE. I'VE LOOKED AT MANY WEBSITE FORUMS AND FOUND MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM THROUGH OUT THE GLOBE. THE FOLLOWING NARRATIVE IS SUBMITTED AS INFORMATION REGARDING THE NHTSA PRELIMINARY EVALUATION ON JULY 26, 2005 TO INVESTIGATE A VARIETY OF CONCERNS RESULTING FROM THE FAILURE OR REDUCED PERFORMANCE OF THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE IN 1999-2001 VOLVO PASSENGER CARS. IN ADDITION TOO THE HIGH FAILURE RATE OF THE ETM, THE AIR MASS METER FAILURE RATE IN MY OPINION IS JUST AS HIGH AND AS COSTLY. IT HAS BEEN MY EXPERIENCE AS WELL AS OTHERS TO LOOSE ENGINE POWER WHEN THIS UNIT FAILS. THIS UNIT FAILED WHILE STOPPED AT A LIGHT. ONCE THE LIGHT CHANGED THE CAR REFUSED TO MOVE. ON OR ABOUT MAY 3RD, 2005, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 2001 VOLVO T6 WHEN SHE SUDDENLY LOST ENGINE PERFORMANCE. SHE WAS TRAVELING ALONG A BUSY INTERSTATE AND SHE MANAGED TO GET THE CAR INTO THE EMERGENCY LANE WHILE HOLDING UP TRAFFIC BEHIND HER. THE FOLLOWING MSG APPEARED ON THE DASH, "ENGINE PERFORMANCE REDUCED". WHEN SHE GOT THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, SHE TURNED THE CAR OFF AND CALLED ME TO INFORM ME THE CAR WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. SHE STARTED THE CAR AFTER A FEW MINUTES AND IT PERFORMED OKAY ON THE WAY HOME. AT THIS TIME, I THOUGHT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A FUEL OR GAS CAP PROBLEM. SHE WAS VERY CLOSE TO HAVING A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THE NEXT DAY SHE WAS TRAVELING WITH OUR CHILDREN ON A VERY BUSY BYPASS AND THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED. THIS TIME, I MADE A CALL TO THE VOLVO DEALER AND THEY INFORMED ME TO LEAVE THE CAR OFF FOR A MINUTE AND THE COMPUTER WOULD RESET. NOT A GOOD SOLUTION. NEEDLESS TO SAY, SHE HAD TO NAVIGATE THE CAR FROM THE INSIDE LANE TO THE EMERGENCY LANE WHILE TRAVELING NO FASTER THAN 20 MPH. AGAIN, THIS WAS A VERY BUSY BYPASS AND LUCKILY SHE MANAGED TO GET THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. FINALLY, I DROVE THE CAR THE NEXT DAY TO SEE HOW IT PERFORMED FOR ME. AGAIN, THE CAR FAILED (I.E. SLOWED TO 20 MPH ON A 70 MPH INTERSTATE) WHILE I WAS DRIVING. I CALLED THE DEALER AGAIN THE NEXT DAY AND THEY INFORMED ME THEY WOULD NEED TO SEE THE CAR IN ORDER TO DIAGNOSE. I INFORMED THEM I NEEDED RECALL WORK PERFORMED ON AN ELECTRICAL FAN SO THEY COULD CHECK INTO MY "ENGINE PERFORMANCE REDUCED" PROBLEM AT THE SAME TIME. ALL THIS SAID, THE CAR FAILED APPROXIMATELY 8-10 TIMES BEFORE I COULD GET THE CAR TO THE SHOP AND REPAIRED ($933.00). THE PROBLEM PART WAS DETERMINED TO BE AN ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE. LUCKILY, MY WIFE, AS WELL AS MYSELF, WERE ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITHOUT GETTING RAN OVER BY TRAFFIC. THIS PROBLEM DEFINITELY NEEDS THE ATTENTION OF THE NHTSA. I ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT AND I ALREADY PAID OVER $1000 TO GET IT FIXED, AND NOW I HAVE TO COME OUT OF POCKET AGAIN ONLY 4 MONTHS LATER. THIS IS HORRIBLE, AND VOLVO SHOULD RECALL ALL THE CARS WITH THIS ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE. I HAVE ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT SEVERAL TIME BECAUSE OF THE RESULT OF THIS DEFECT. DT: ON JULY 23 WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE AT 75 MPH THE OWNER NOTICED THE PERFORMANCE REDUCED LIGHT"CAME ON . THE CRUISE CONTROL SHUT OFF BY ITSELF. THEN OWNER PUSHED THE GAS, THERE WAS A FEELING OF LOSS OF POWER. THEN, THE OWNER GOT OFF ON THE NEAREST EXIT. THE OWNER TOOK IT DIRECLTY TO THE MECHANIC WHO ADVISED THE CAR WAS SHOWING A CODE INDICATING A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE. SO THE OWNER WILL TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TOMORROW. THE OWNER CALLED THE DEALERHSIP WHO ADVISED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL AND THE OWNER SHOULD JUST BRING IN THE CAR FOR INSPECTION. THE OWNER CALLED VOLVO AND THEY HAVE ADVISED THAT THEY ARE NOT HELPING WITH THE COST OF REPAIR BECUASE THERE IS NO RECALL.DID THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY STALL OUT AND DIE OR DID IT LOSE POWER AND OPERATE AT A REDUCED SPEED? I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE VOLVO BOASTS OF BEING ONE OF THE MOST SAFE CARS MANUFACTURED. WELL, STOPPING DURING TURNING, GOING WITHOUT THE GAS BEING PRESSED AND STALLING AT A LIGHT DOESN'T SEEM VERY SAFE FOR MY 8 YR OLD. THIS HAS HAPPENED A NUMBER OF TIMES. I'VE HAD THE ENGINE TROUBLE-SHOOTED FROM FAILED SPARK PLUGS, TO FAILED FUEL INJECTORS, BUT IT TURNS OUT THAT THE ETM WAS THE PROBLEM. AS THE ENGINE DIES, ALL POWER STEERING IS GONE AS WELL AS HYDROLIC BREAKS. I'VE HAD THE ENGINE DIE ON ME TWICE IN THE MIDDLE OF A TURN AND I'VE ALMOST BEEN IN ACCIDENTS BOTH TIMES BECAUSE THE WHEEL WOULDN'T TURN DO TO LOSS OF STEERING PRESSURE. THE ENGIN ALSO SURGES SOMETIMES WHILE STOPPED. THIS ABRUPT INCREASE IN RPM MOVES THE CAR FORWARD AND HAS THE POTENTIAL OF CAUSING A REAREND COLLISION. THE MIRRORS AND DRIVER SEAT POSITION MEMORY DO NOT RESPOND CORRECTLY TO THE KEY REMOTE COMMAND TO UNLOCK THE CAR. THE SEAT WILL GO TO THE MEMORIZED POSITION, BUT THE MIRRORS DO NOT. THE THROTTLE CONTROL MODULE ON MY 2001 VOLVO S80 WENT BAD AND THE CAR IMMEDIATELY POWERED DOWN AND WAS NOT DRIVABLE. I WAS GOING UP A HILL ON A ROAD WITHOUT A SHOULDER AND WITH A BLIND CURVE AND HAD TO SIT THERE FOR SEVERAL MINUTES BEFORE I COULD START THE CAR AGAIN AND PROCEED. HOWEVER, ON SUNDAY(4/22), AS SOON AS I DROVE OUT FROM MY APARTMENT, I HEARD A CRACK SOUND AND THOUGHT THAT WAS A FLAT TIRE. I STEPPED OUT AND CHECKED THE TIRES, NOTHING WAS WRONG. WHEN I BACKED UP THE CAR, MY FRIENDS SAW PARTS ARE FALLING OUT FROM THE CAR AND THE WHEEL WAS OFF THE AXLE HITTING THE FENDER. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME THIS WAS CAUSED BY BALL JOINT DETACHMENT. HE SAID THIS MIGHT BE AN AFTERMATH OF MY FIRST ACCIDENT. AFTER INVESTIGATION, MY INSURANCE COMPANY TOLD ME THIS DEFECT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MY FIRST ACCIDENT BUT MAY HAD BEEN HAPPENING BEFORE IT OR SOMEONE HAS BEEN WORKING ON IT FOR A PERIOD OF TIME TO CAUSE THIS TO HAPPEN. BOTH THE SERVICE AND THE CLAIM REPRESENTATIVES SAID THIS COULD NOT BE IN ANY OF MY ABILITY TO CAUSE THIS TO HAPPEN.*AK
