In April 2021 I drove my newly acquired Volvo V70 wagon from Mississippi to my home in RI. Once I reached in and around NYC, the car began to surge forward as I applied the brakes at stop lights/signs. This became most pronounced at the GW Bridge Toll area, in high slow-moving traffic. Several times the car almost got out of control as the brakes were barely enough to stop the car from ramming into other vehicles. Cars and huge trucks were honking their horns as I broke, swerved, smoke clouds from high idling in neutral, and peeling rubber as I moved forward from standing still. I was trapped as there is no place to pull over to the sides to a breakdown lane. It eventually stopped surging but has threatened to do it in RI. I asked the mechanic about it when I had to get the car inspected. He basically said he would have to see the vehicle when it was happening. I am just funding out about Recall information and filing a report. I really want to have any necessary repairs made because the car performs well otherwise...AND I am hoping to give the car for my daughter to use as she starts her new job, but want to make sure it is safe first. I feel I would know how to handle it if it surges again (throw it in neutral, brake and pull to safe place, etc), but can't trust that she would be able to handle this emergency situation.

IT CUTS IN AND OUT RANDOMLY BUT THAT WAS IN THE BEGINNING NOW IT DOES NOT WORK AT ALL. COULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE NOT KNOWING HOW FAST YOU WERE GOING OR HOW MUCH FUEL YOU HAVE. THE VEHICLE STALLS OR GOES INTO "LIMP" MODE OFTEN UPON ACCELERATION, BUT ALSO APPARENTLY RANDOMLY. THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE SAME MODEL OF A DIFFERENT YEAR DESCRIBED AS "VEHICLES GOING INTO THE LIMP HOME MODE WITHOUT NEED". I TOOK IT TO A VOLVO MECHANIC AND HE FOUND NO PROBLEM, BUT HE CLEANED SOME PARTS AND CHARGED ME. IT STILL HAPPENS AND IS DANGEROUS SINCE THE CAR COULD STALL IN TRAFFIC. IT HAS HAPPENED OVER 100 TIMES. I CALLED VOLVO "SUPPORT" AND THEY SAID THEY COULD DO NOTHING SINCE THERE IS NO RECALL ON THAT MODEL. THEY OFFERED NO TECHNICAL SUPPORT WHICH I THOUGHT WAS THE LEAST THEY SHOULD DO. I WOULD LIKE TO GET IT FIXED, BUT VOLVO IS OF NO HELP. AT LEAST THEY SHOULD OFFER TECHNICAL SUPPORT EVEN IF THERE IS NO RECALL.

I WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 6:30AM, IT WAS STILL DARK, AND MY DASHBOARD WOULD NOT DISPLAY. I WAS GOING ABOUT 35 MILES PER HOUR. I PANICKED BECAUSE IT TELLS ME ALL THE CRITICAL THINGS ABOUT THE MOVING VEHICLE. THEN ABOUT 2 MINUTES LATER IT CAME ON. THIS NON-DISPLAY OF THE DASHBOARD WOULD INTERMITTENTLY HAPPEN WHEN I DROVE THE VEHICLE OVER THE NEXT MONTH. I COULD NOT DETECT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. I WENT ONLINE AND OTHER VOLVO V70 OWNER HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. IT STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE DIM (DRIVE INFORMATION MODULE). THE PROBLEM EXISTS FOR YEARS 2000 TO 2009. SO I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY VOLVO MECHANIC. HE SAID IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM. THE DIM WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. I HAD THE MECHANIC REPLACE THE DIM BECAUSE I HAD NO CHOICE. I COULD NOT DRIVE WITHOUT A DASHBOARD. I CALLED VOLVO AND ASKED WHAT THEY WERE DOING ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THEY SAID NOTHING. BUT THEY WOULD REPORT IT TO NHTSA WITH THEIR NEXT REPORT. I PERSONALLY THINK THIS PART SHOULD BE RECALLED. I WAS SURPRISED TO HEAR IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AND FOR SO MANY YEARS. INSTRUMENT CLUSTER: SERVICE AIRBAG WARNING CAME ON AND STAYED ON, SHORTLY THEREAFTER CLOCK STARTED GOING BACKWARDS RAPIDLY, ALL GAUGES WENT OFF (CAME BACK WITH A SMACK TO THE DASH). FOUND OUT THERE WAS NO FAULT IN AIRBAGS BUT THE CLUSTER'S SOLDER JOINTS HAD LOOSENED. (VOLVO WENT TO LEAD-FREE SOLDER AROUND THIS TIME) VOLVO'S FIX INVOLVES REPLACING THE CLUSTER FOR $1200 FOR THE PART. I GOT A USED ONE FROM JUNKYARD AND REPLACED IT MYSELF. NOW IT'S TWO YEARS LATER AND THIS CLUSTER IS STARTING TO EXHIBIT THE CLOCK AND INTERMITTENT OUTAGES. DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE AS HAVING NO GAUGES IS NOT GOOD PLUS NEEDLESSLY WORRYING ABOUT THE AIRBAG ISN'T GOOD. FIRST, I GOT A MESSAGE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL SAYING "SRS AIRBAG URGENT." A FEW DAYS LATER, THE PANEL STARTED TO INTERMITTENTLY WORK. WHEN IT DOESN'T WORK, I HAVE NO WORKING SPEEDOMETER, FUEL GAUGE, ODOMETER, BLINKERS (ALTHOUGH THEY STILL WORK OUTSIDE THE CAR), OR ANY OTHER LIGHT THAT WOULD NORMALLY BE SHOWN ON THE PANEL. OCCASIONALLY EVERYTHING COMES ON, THEN IT FREEZES, AND EVENTUALLY TURNS BACK OFF. TOOK IT TO SHOP AND THEY TRIED A DIFFERENT PANEL BUT IT HAS TO BE CODED IN AND THE SOFTWARE WAS NOT COMPATIBLE. TOOK IT TO ANOTHER SHOP AND THEY SAID THEY COULD TRY TO SEND IT TO SOMEONE IN CANADA WHO REBUILDS THEM AND RECODES THEM SO THEY CAN BE REINSTALLED, BUT THE MECHANIC SAID TO WAIT UNTIL HE HAS MORE INFORMATION. OBVIOUSLY, THIS IS DANGEROUS FOR ME TO HAVE TO GUESS WHAT SPEED I'M GOING AND TO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH FUEL I HAVE LEFT. BUT ITS TRANSMISSION STARTED TO SLIP SINCE FEB 2011 WHEN THERE WAS ONLY 100,000 MILES ON IT. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. THEY SUGGESTED A TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGE. WE FOLLOWED THEIR SUGGESTION AS WE ALWAYS DID. BUT THAT DID NOT RESOLVED THE PROBLEM. THE TRANSMISSION STILL DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY. I THEN STOPPED. ON OTHER OCCASIONS, MOSTLY WHEN COMING TO A STOP AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE CAR SLOWS DOWN AND THEN SURGES AHEAD, AFTER APPLYING THE BRAKE. ONCE AGAIN, TO STOP THE CAR I HAD TO SLAM DOWN HARD ON THE BRAKE AND PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL. ON OTHER OCCASIONS, AFTER STOPPING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT OR STOP SIGN, THE ENGINE REVS UP TO THE POINT THAT I HAVE TO PUT IT INTO NEUTRAL TO STOP THE REVVING. I HAVE BROUGHT THE CAR INTO THE MARTENS VOLVO DEALER AND EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM EACH TIME I BROUGHT IT IN FOR SERVICING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED IN REFERENCE TO RECALL # 04V051000, EXTERIOR LIGHTING BRAKE LIGHTS; HOWEVER, HE WAS ADVISED THAT HIS VIN WAS EXCLUDED FROM AND THAT HE WAS INELIGIBLE FOR A FREE REMEDY. THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED WHEN MY WIFE AND I WERE PICKING UP MY GRANDDAUGHTER AT HER HOME LOCATED ON A STEEP HILLSIDE WITH A STEEP DRIVE PROBABLY 8 PLUS DEGREES. I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND STARTED TO BACK DOWN THE DRIVE. I HAD TO BACK OVER THE CONCRETE DRIVE EDGE AS I HAD PULLED OFF INTO THE YARD TO MAKE ROOM FOR HER PARENTS VEHICLE. TO GET OVER THE EDGE I HAD TO PRESS LIGHTLY ON THE ACCELERATOR. I HAVE FREQUENTLY BACKED DOWN THE DRIVE USUALLY IN IDLE. THE MOMENT I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR THE CAR IMMEDIATELY WENT INTO FULL THROTTLE. I JAMMED THE GEAR SHIFT INTO PARK , PULLED THE EMERGENCY AND PRESSED AS HARD AS POSSIBLE ON THE BRAKE. NOTHING SLOWED OR EVEN SEEM TO EFFECT THE BACKWARD ACCELERATION. I HIT A RAILROAD TIE THAT WAS ONE OF MANY THAT DEFINED THE DRIVE. THE FRONT TIRE LITERALLY EXPLODED. I WAS ABLE TO STEER DOWN THE DRIVE ONTO THE ROAD AROUND A GREATER THAN 90 DEGREE TURN BACKWARDS AND UP HILL. THE RIM DUG INTO THE ASPHALT , THE CAR STOPPED AND ENGINE SHUT OFF. WE PUT ON THE SPARE AND DROVE HOME. TWO DAYS LATER, IN THE SAME PLACE, I STARTED TO BACK ONTO THE DRIVE AS BEFORE. I WAS VERY MUCH AWARE OF THE SITUATION AND THEREFORE WAS VERY CAREFUL TO SEE THAT THERE WAS NO OVERLAP OF FOOT ON BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR. I ALSO THOUGHT THAT IF THAT TERRIBLE INCIDENT WERE TO REPEAT ITSELF I WOULD TURN OFF THE KEY. WHEN THE BACK TIRE CAME IN CONTACT WITH THE DRIVEWAY LIP I ONCE AGAIN I HAD TO PRESS THE ACCELERATOR TO GET ON THE DRIVEWAY. SAME TERRIBLE RESPONSE. THIS TIME IN ADDITION TO JAMMING INTO PARK, PULLING THE EMERGENCY, JAMMING ON THE BRAKE, I ALSO TURNED OFF THE KEY. NONE OF THAT EVOKED ANY RESPONSE. THIS TIME I WAS UNABLE TO STAY ON THE DRIVE AND WENT OVER A STEEP BANK ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE DRIVE. THE VEHICLE WENT THROUGH TWO TREES AT LEAST 3" IN DIAMETER, A WHITE PICKET FENCE AND FENCE POSTS.. IT HIT THE BANK AT THE SIDE OF THE STREET AND STOPPED WITHOUT THE RELEASE OF AIRBAGS. I RECENTLY HAD MY 2002 VOLVO XC70 LOOKED AT BY A MECHANIC. AMONG OTHER THINGS, HE SAID THAT WITH NEARLY 100,000 MILES ON THE CAR, IT WAS DUE FOR FRESH TRANSMISSION FLUID. I DRAINED ABOUT A GALLON OF FLUID FROM THE TRANS, WENT TO THE DEALER AND BOUGHT FOUR LITERS OF VOLVO APPROVED TRANSMISSION FLUID AND PUT IT IN THE TRANSMISSION. NOW THE CAR WON'T SHIFT INTO 3RD GEAR. THE TIE ROD SYSTEM ON VEHICLE HAS BEEN REPLACED FOUR TIMES DUE TO WEAR. IT HAS BEEN REPLACED WITHIN THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY PERIOD. UPON INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE DURING A SAFETY CHECK BY THE DEALER, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE TIE ROD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AGAIN, ONLY 12,000 MILES AFTER THE PREVIOUS REPLACEMENT. THIS TIME IT IS NO LONGER IN WARRANTY. I HAVE SPOKEN TO THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALER ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE TO SEE IF IT IS A CONSISTENT PROBLEM AND THEY WILL NOT PROVIDE THE INFORMATION TO ME. THEY REINSPECTED MY VEHICLE TO "WORK" WITH ME REGARDING REPLACEMENT OF THE TIE ROD FOR A REDUCED RATE AND DETERMINED THAT IT DID NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED. ON 3/1/04 I DISCOVERED THAT THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE ON MY VOLVO V70 HAD LARGE BULGES ON THE SIDE WALL. THE TIRE IS A PIRELLI P6 235/45 R17 ALL SEASON. THIS IS AN OEM TIRE. THE CAR HAS 7,400 MILES ON IT. I DOVE THE CAR IMMEDIATELY TO THE DEALER. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE DAMAGE MUST HAVE BEEN CAUSE BY HITTING SOMETHING AND IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. I HAVE NOT HIT ANYTHING WITH THE TIRE AND THERE WAS NO THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF ANYKIND OF ANY IMPACT. THE DEALER REPLACED THE TIRE ON 3/2/04 AT MY EXPENSE. I AM FILING THIS NOW BECAUSE ON 7/5/04 I HAD A SECOND SIMILAR EVENT. SEE ODI NUMBER 10080391. DURING OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE DURING COLD WEATHER, THE DRIVER NOTICED A HESITATION WHEN APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND HEARD A SLIGHT "CRUNCHING" SOUND. AT A LATER DATE, CONSUMER WAS DRIVING APPROX. 35-45 MPH ON A ROAD WITH HILLS (UP AND DOWN). WHILE DRIVING UP AN INCLINE, THE DRIVER EXPERIENCED SAME HESITATION AND HEARD A HORRIBLE "PUNCHING" SOUND. THE VEHICLE CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP WHILE ANOTHER VEHICLE RAPIDLY APPROACHED FROM THE REAR. THE OTHER VEHICLE HAD TO SWERVE SUDDENLY TO AVOID HITTING CONSUMER'S VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER & PASSENGER HAD TO ROLL VEHICLE DOWN THE HILL AND CALL FOR HELP. DEALER EXAMINED VEHICLE AND DETERMINED THAT THE LEFT AXLE HAD PULLED OUT OF THE TRANSMISSION (DUE TO A PIN THAT HAD BROKE). THE DEALER PERFORMED A TEMPORARY FIX BY BANGING AXLE BACK INTO THE TRANSMISSION. ALSO, DEALER FOUND THAT THE LEFT BALL JOINT WAS BROKEN (UNKNOWN WHEN THIS OCCURRED). VOLVO RELUCTANTLY RELEASED US FROM OUR LEASE A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO. OUR FIRST VOLVO EXPERIENCED ELECTRICAL AND TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. THEY PUT US IN ANOTHER VOLVO WHICH EXPERIENCED TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS AS WELL. AFTER REPEATED ATTEMPTS ON VOLVO OF DALLAS' PART TO REPAIR OUR CAR THEY FINALLY REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION HOWEVER THE NEW TRANSMISSION WAS NOT PERFORMING PROPERLY EITHER WHEN VOLVO RELEASED US FROM THE LEASE. THE DEALERSHIP, AREA/REGIONAL DIRECTORS, AND VOLVO CORPORATION PRACTICED POOR BUSINESS ETIQUETTE ON ALL ACCOUNTS IN OUR OPINION. THEY DID RELEASE US FROM OUR LEASE HOWEVER, REFUSED TO REIMBURSE US FOR OUR INITIAL $5000.00 DOWN PAYMENT. OUR ENTIRE VOLVO EXPERIENCE DISGUSTED US SO THAT WE CHOSE NOT TO ENDURE THE LENGTHLY PROCESS OF A LAW SUIT. WE JUST WANTED TO DRIVE A SAFE, DEPENDABLE, RELIABLE VEHICLE THAT FIT OUR FAMILIES NEEDS. TOO MUCH TO ASK FROM VOLVO! IT IS A SHAME BECAUSE WHEN WE GOT INTO OUR VOLVO WE PLANNED ON BEING VOLVO CUSTOMERS "FOR LIFE." GOOD LUCK.

PROBLEM - SIDEWALL BUBBLING ON TIRES WITHIN THE FIRST 5-1/2 MONTHS OF OWNING MY NEW VOLVO STATION WAGON, I HAD TO REPLACE 2 PIRELLI TIRES DUE TO SIDEWALL BUBBLING. 5 MONTHS LATER, WITH 12,000 MILES ON THE CAR, ONE OF THOSE BRAND NEW TIRES HAS TO BE REPLACED AGAIN DUE TO THE SAME ISSUE. MY MAIN COMPLAINT IS THAT VOLVO RECOMMENDED THESE TIRES TO ME DESPITE THE FACT THAT I INDICATED THAT I LIVE IN REDDING, CT, PRIMARILY DRIVE ON BACK ROADS, AND THAT MY MAIN REASON FOR BUYING THE CAR WAS SAFETY. THEY TOLD ME I WAS BETTER OFF WITH "HIGH PERFORMANCE TIRES". I'VE CONTACTED VOLVO AND THEY REFUSED TO ACCEPT ANY RESPONSIBILITY OR DO ANYTHING TO HELP. THEY TOLD ME THAT I MUST HAVE HIT A POTHOLE SO THE DAMAGE WAS MY FAULT BUT IN 18 YEARS OF DRIVING ON THE SAME ROADS THAT I'VE BEEN DRIVING MY VOLVO ON, I HAVE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE TIRES FOR ANY OTHER REASON THAN NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. AND SINCE THE PROBLEMS WITH ALL 3 TIRES OCCURRED AT SEPARATE TIMES, IT SEEMS APPARENT THAT THESE TIRES ARE NOT APPROPRIATE FOR THE LOCAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. WITHIN 5 MINUTES THE FLAMES ENGULFED THE CAR AND THE GAS TANK EXPLODED! I WAS ABLE TO TAKE NOTHING WITH ME, I LOST EVERYTHING IN THE CAR DOWN TO MY PURSE! THE SADDEST PART ABOUT MY STORY IS THAT NOTHING IN THE VOLVO WARNED ME I WAS ON FIRE!! MY HUSBAND NOTIFIED OUR LOCAL VOLVO DEALERSHIP WHO IN TURN CONTACTED VOLVO NORTH AMERICA. ON SEPTEMBER 23, 2003 WE RECEIVED A LETTER FROM A [XXX] THAT STATED "A VOLVO FIELD TECHNICAL SPECIALIST THOROUGHLY EXAMINED YOUR VEHICLE. THERE WAS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO YOUR VOLVO AND BASED ON OUR INSPECTION AND AVAILABLE INFORMATION, WE DID NOT CONCLUDE A VOLVO PRODUCT RELATED CONDITION AS THE CAUSE OF THE SITUATION YOU REPORTED." I AM DUMBFOUNDED! I WOULD LIKE AN EXPLANATION AS TO WHY MY NEW VOLVO CAUGHT FIRE AS I AM DRIVING 35 MPH AND THEN BURNT TO THE GROUND!! AT OTHER TIMES, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO LOCK THE DOORS UTILIZING THE POWER LOCK CONTROLS. THE LOCKS LAST BROKE ON 11/03/2003.
