THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO HER RESIDENCE HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE HAS FAILED TO RESTART. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS COVERED IN GASOLINE. HORN IS DESIGNED POORLY WHICH HAS CAUSED SEVERAL CLOSE CALLS BECAUSE I WAS UNABLE TO HONK MY HORN AT A CRUCIAL TIME. INSTEAD OF BEING ABLE TO PRESS THE CENTER OF THE STEERING WHEEL TO HONK THE HORN, THERE ARE TWO SMALL BUTTONS AT THE 9 AND 3 POSITION THAT APPEAR TO BE POSITIONED TO PRESS WITH YOUR THUMB- IF YOUR HANDS ARE AT THE 9 & 3 POSITION. IN AN EMERGENT SITUATION, THE FIRST INCLINATION IS TO HIT THE MIDDLE OF THE STEERING WHEEL TO ACTIVATE THE HORN, NOT TO SEARCH FOR EITHER OF THE TWO LITTLE HORN BUTTONS. IN THE LATEST INCIDENT, I HAD THE RIGHT OF WAY ON A LEFT TURN ARROW, A CAR GOING STRAIGHT WENT THROUGH THE RED LIGHT AND NEARLY BROADSIDED ME. I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF THE 1992 HONDA ACCORD. I HAVE EXPERIENCED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON THIS VEHICLE THAT WILL GENERALLY REQUIRE OVERHAUL OR REPLACEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION. AFTER SEVERAL ON-LINE RESEARCHES ON HONDA ACCORDS 1990 TO DATE, I FIND NUMEROUS PROBLEMS, I.E., ACCELERATION FAILURE. WHEN ENGINE GETS HOT, THE CAR HAS ACCELERATION FAILURE. EVEN FURTHER RESEARCH REVEALS ?CERTIFIED TRANSMISSION MECHANICS REVEALED THAT THIS KNOWN PREMATURE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE IS DUE TO AN ENGINEERING DESIGN FLAW. IN ADDITION, ?THIS DESIGN FLAW CONSISTS OF THE HONDA ACCORD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION NOT HAVING OUTSIDE ACCESS TO THE METAL SCREEN INTERNAL TRANSMISSION FILTER WHICH BECOMES CLOGGED WITH GUNK AND METAL SHAVINGS, THUS STARVING THE TRANSMISSION, WHICH CAUSES OVERHEATING, AND FURTHER DETERIORATION AND PREMATURE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE.? THERE IS NO WAY TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE METAL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FILTER BECAUSE THERE IS NO TRANSMISSION PAN TO UNBOLT AND ALLOW ACCESS. COMPLETE DISASSEMBLE OF THE TRANSMISSION IS REQUIRED. A FAULTY TRANSMISSION CONTROL UNIT, CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO AT RANDOM SHIFT IN TO AN IMPROPER GEAR OR INTO NEUTRAL AT OR DURING TAKE OFF FROM STOP. I CONTACTED HONDA ABOUT GETTING THIS REPAIRED AND IT WOULD COST $250+ FOR THE PART AND THEN LABOR WOULD BE $72 PER HOUR AND IT WOULD TAKE 2.5 HOURS TO FIX IT. THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE MY LOCAL TAXES. HONDA DEALERS HAVE NO SAFETY OR MAINTENANCE RECALL/BULLETIN ON THIS ISSUE. THEY OFFER TO REPLACE THE TCM (GUESS THAT IS THE COMPUTER) FOR $570.00 PLUS LABOR! SEVERAL HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF THESE YEARS' MODELS WERE SOLD AND ARE ON THE ROAD. IF A COMPUTER FAILURE PUTS THE DRIVER AND THE TRAFFIC AT DANGER BECAUSE THE CAR CHOOSES A DIFFERENT GEAR OR NO GEAR, THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD FIX THE DAMAGED COMPUTER COMPONENT OR WHATEVER THE FAILED COMPONENT. MY HUSBAND RETURNED TO NTB TODAY TO BE TOLD THAT IT WOULD COST HIM $100 TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE TIRES (I.E., THE COST OF THE TIRES, BALANCING, STEM, LABOR, ETC., MINUS A CREDIT FOR TIRE WEAR. THESE TIRES HAVE A 35,000 MILE WARRANTY AND WE APPARENTLY HAVE USED THEM FOR 23,000 MILES. THIS IS NTB'S STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE). THESE ARE NOT FIRESTONE TIRES, BUT FORMULA GT TIRES (WE ARE ATTEMPTING TO DETERMINE THE MANUFACTURER OF THE TIRE). WE ARE DISGUSTED WITH NTB. THEY SHOW A COMPLETE DISREGARD FOR CONSUMER SAFETY. THIS IS AMAZING IN LIGHT OF THE CURRENT SITUATION WITH FIRESTONE. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED WE FOUGHT WITH THEM IN ORDER TO GET THE TIRES REPLACED WITHOUT COST. OF COURSE, WE STILL HAD TO PAY FOR THE ALIGNMENT. TODAY THEY WERE ABSURD. MY HUSBAND TRIED TO CONTACT SEARS WHILE HE WAS IN NTB, BUT THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT MERELY PLACED HIM BACK IN TOUCH WITH THE STORE MANAGER WHO MAINTAINED HIS POSITION. MOST BUSINESS' WOULD RECOGNIZE THE PROBLEM AND TAKE CARE OF THE CUSTOMER WITHOUT QUESTION. FROM A BUSINESS STANDPOINT, IT IS MORE COST EFFECTIVE TO KEEP AN EXISTING CUSTOMER THAN TO ATTRACT A NEW ONE. I'M SURE THE MARKETING DEPARTMENT SPENDS A LOT MORE THAN $100.00 TO ATTRACT CUSTOMERS TO ITS STORES. SEVERE ENGINE VIBRATION, STEERING WHEEL AND DASHBOARD SHAKE, VERY DISTRACTING, AND CONCERNED THAT DAMAGE COULD RESULT TO SOME COMPONENTS FROM THIS SHAKING. JUST HAD 90000 MILE SERVICE DONE. ASKED IF THE SHAKING HAD GONE AWAY. MECHANIC SAID THAT THE ENGINE IS OK, HOWEVER, THE SHAKING IS COMMON ON THIS YEAR ACCORD (1992). WHEN ASKED HOW IT COULD BE FIXED, HE SAID IT WAS LIKELY A MOTOR MOUNT PROBLEM, POSSIBLY THE ONE WITH FLUID IN IT. HE SAID THIS CAN DEVELOP AS THE ENGINE "SETTLES" OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
