The AC Evaporator core is leaking. Known issue amongst these vehicles.
Vehicle subject to NHTSA Recall 25V796000 (fuel system defect). In July 2025, while driving, a loud explosive sound came from the rear of the vehicle followed by raw gasoline fumes entering the cabin. Vehicle was towed to a Hyundai dealership and held approximately 120 days before being returned as repaired. In December 2025, the exact same defect recurred. A third-party diagnostic scan (performed before drop-off) confirmed DTC Code P14EE — Fuel Tank Check Valve / Evaporative Purge System failure — directly related to the recall. The vehicle was held an additional 110+ days while the dealer awaited a new remedy from the manufacturer. Total days out of service: 230+. The recall repair has now failed twice. The safety defect was never successfully corrected after a reasonable number of attempts. The vehicle is currently being withheld by the dealership pending an unrelated disputed repair charge.
It was smoking from the engine, I immediately stopped the vehicle. My safety was put at risk immediately while being in the vehicle when the air bags deployed hitting me in the face and causing my face to swell. The safety of others was put at risk due to others being right next to me and putting others at risk of engine blowing up. Yes, the vehicle has been inspected by police. There were no warning signs on the vehicle.
The back up camera sometimes is only a black screen, it is random and has done it in all sorts of weather. Usually is corrected when vehicle is started next.
I have had my car since January of 2023 and I have had no significant issues. I bought the car with roughly 30,000 miles, fast forward to February of 2026 it has about 123,000 miles and the engine is burning oil very fast. My car loses oil so fast the oil light comes on way early before my next oil change is due.
On 2/19/2026 while driving, my 2020 Hyundai Sonata Limited 1.6T began making several loud explosive / popping sounds. At the same time, the fuel gauge on the display screen appeared to rapidly drop, as if the vehicle was losing gas. Immediately following this, the vehicle began to hesitate and lose power while accelerating. The hesitation felt like the engine was misfiring or struggling to maintain consistent performance. There were multiple explosive sounds before and during the hesitation. This created a major safety concern while driving and the vehicle underwent an inspection at Hyundai in Deland, FL. The service department was brief and stated they needed to keep the vehicle for repair for an unknown amount of time as the fuel tank expanded. No further information was provided at that time.
White pain is pealing off and it’s pretty bad especially when going through car wash
Rear camera doesn’t work and is just a black screen. It started out intermittent and now doesn’t work at all.
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V796000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. The battery and the key warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that after several attempts, the vehicle started. The vehicle was driven to the end of the driveway and turned off. The contact was afraid of driving the vehicle due to the failure. The independent mechanic was made aware of the failure. The contact was informed of an open recall. The dealer was made aware of the failure and confirmed the open recall information. In addition, the contact was advised that the failure might be because of the unrepaired recall. The contact was advised to bring the vehicle in for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V796000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, parts for the recall repair were not yet available. The failure mileage was approximately 42,947.
My vehicle was at a manufacturer‑authorized dealership for a federally mandated recall repair. While the vehicle was in the dealership’s exclusive care, custody, and control, it was struck by a third‑party cleaning vendor operating on dealership property and was declared a total loss. I did not hire or authorize this vendor. After the incident, the manufacturer informed me in writing that the dealership would repair the damage at their own expense, separate from the recall work. The manufacturer also stated they were covering the recall‑related repairs and were coordinating with the dealership. They provided weekly updates, monitored the recall repair, and escalated a backordered recall part. Later, after the dealership confirmed the vehicle was a total loss, the manufacturer reversed its position and stated it was “not involved.” The dealership has refused to identify the cleaning company responsible for the loss, their insurer, or any claim information, preventing any direct follow‑up. The manufacturer continues to direct me to “work with the parties involved,” even though the responsible vendor has not been disclosed. This raises concerns about the safety and oversight of the recall repair process, the handling of vehicles during recall service, and the manufacturer’s response when a vehicle is destroyed during a recall procedure.
I have taken my vehicle to a certified Hyundai dealership multiple times due to intermittent starting issues. The car will unlock remotely, and the lights and electrical components will turn on, but the engine will not start. When this happens, I press the ignition button to turn the vehicle off and then try again. Sometimes it eventually starts, but there have been several occasions when it would not start at all, forcing me to call for a tow or have the battery jumped. This issue occurs most often in cool or cold weather. I had a brand new battery installed at the dealership in July 2025, yet the problem has continued. I have been dealing with this for over a year and have even been stranded out of state in below-freezing temperatures. Each time I bring the vehicle in, the dealership states they are unable to replicate the issue while it is in their service department.
While stopping at a major highway intersection on [XXX] for a red light vehicle stalls and will not start back up while everyone else continues at a 55 mph mile an hour passing me on each side! This happened more than 6 times . While you’re stuck in intersection, you have to keep trying to start the car eventually it will start . Apparently it is EGR valve and is a very common problem. IT IS NOTED IN THE common problem for this year making model and the repair cost is in the range of $1600 even the dealership said it is a very common problem. They have been experiencing it. I own a 2020 Hyundai Sonata with factory-applied paint. The vehicle developed paint peeling/clear-coat failure on the driver-side rear quarter panel without any prior damage, accident, or repainting. The paint began separating from the body, exposing the underlying surface. I brought the vehicle to an authorized Hyundai dealer. The dealer acknowledged a paint adhesion failure and submitted the issue to Hyundai. Hyundai declined to fully cover the repair, stating the model year was not included in their paint warranty extension, even though similar peeling paint defects have been acknowledged and covered by Hyundai on earlier Sonata model years. The dealer ultimately repainted both rear panels due to the nature of the failure, but Hyundai required me to pay approximately 20% of the repair cost as a goodwill arrangement. I was not offered a full repaint or full reimbursement. I have also observed early signs of potential paint adhesion issues around the rear window frame, raising concern that the defect may progress to other areas of the vehicle. This appears to be a manufacturing paint adhesion defect rather than normal wear, and similar issues have been widely reported on Hyundai vehicles. I am reporting this issue to document a recurring paint adhesion defect on the 2020 Hyundai Sonata and to assist in identifying a potential pattern affecting additional vehicles.
My 202 Hyundai Sonata is involved in the current hyundai fuel system recall. on 10/26/25 the fuel tank expanded and caused three explosive "boom" sounds inside the vehicle while I was driving with passengers. The backseat began heating and rising upward due to fuel tank swelling. The tank became pressurized, hissing, bubbling, and would not accept fuel. The vehicle became inoperable. The car has now been at hyundai of camelback since 10/27/25 (30 days). Hyndai Corporate has repeatedly delayed providing a remedy and keeps telling me they "need another week". I have received no repair plan, and no decision. This violates the requirement for a timely recall remedy. The defect caused structural damage and created a serious safety hazard. "
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the vehicle failed to start as intended. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle eventually started and drove normally. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the starter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 27,000.
Coolant is leaking again after being fixed at a Hyundai dealer. If I don't fix it, my car will overheat and catch fire in the middle of a public road. My warranty has now expired, so I'll have to pay for the repairs myself. However, this problem is a design flaw, not related to the car's age or mileage. Hyundai should fix this problem. I'm not the only one; there are a lot of people complaining about this.
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while reversing, the back-over prevention camera malfunctioned, and there was no image of the rear of the vehicle displayed. The contact stated that the display screen only displayed lines. The contact stated that the failure caused a visibility hazard for the driver. The vehicle was examined by an independent mechanic who determined that the camera was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The local dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.
Wiring harness under fuse box is not making a consistent connection and is causing the blower amp to overheat and disconnect. When this happen, cabin air doesn’t blow and the front and rear defrost stops working. The only way to make the blower engage is by removing the fuse box cover and tapping the 30 amp fuse things. I’ve taken my car to the dealership for this specific problem 5 separate times, and it was supposed to be corrected. Due to this poor connection, I am now about $1200 into repairs / replacing parts that aren’t the root cause. I am not taking my car back to the dealership for a 6th time to have it “fixed” but the service guy looked me in the face and said “you should trade it. We see this issue all the time in sonatas and elantras. It won’t be fixed”. I’ve replaced the blower motor, had the Freon charged, this is one of the vehicles with the exploding gas tank, and I’ve already paid to replace gaskets.
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. While the contact's wife was reversing, the back over prevention camera system displayed a black screen. The dealer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact referenced an unknown recall with a similar failure; however, the VIN was not associated. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 46,000.
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the vehicle hesitated while depressing the accelerator pedal, with the check engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to several independent mechanics and dealers to be diagnosed; however, the cause of the failure was not determined. The contact stated that one mechanic replaced an unknown sensor, but the failure returned soon after the repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 101,000
In early May 2025 while driving around 40mph, I heard a very loud pop which startled me. Pulled over and looked back and noticed my backseats were push up out of place. I attempted to put the seat back into place but it wouldn’t fit into the latch anymore. The framing underneath the seats looked pretty damaged so I took it to a local mechanic. After doing some research, he found information for a check valve/fuel tank recall (Service Campaign 9B1) and then advised me to go a Hyundai dealership. I attempted to take it to the dealership, whom sent me away after I advised them of what happened. I came back the next day asking them to take a look at while informing them about the recall that could be related. Later that evening, they called and said the issue was directly related to the recall and the repairs would be covered. My car was in their possession for from 5.12.25 to 7.25.25 without any updates or instructions on what is happening. I was told they’re waiting to hear back from Hyundai Manufacturer on how to proceed. They returned my car to me on 7.25.25 stating everything was repaired. On 7.31.25 they called me back stating my tank needs to be replaced and bring the car back asap. My car was again being repaired and was returned to me on 8.25.25. Now my vehicle will not start randomly sometimes. At this point, I’m under the impression my vehicle is no longer safe as all the issues I’ve been facing are fuel related.
My certified pre-owned 2020 Hyundai Sonata has experienced the same critical transmission failure three times since October 2024, creating dangerous safety conditions on highways and city streets. Component/System Failed: Transmission control system with consistent P0768 error code (Shift Solenoid D Circuit Fault). Safety Risks: The transmission failures cause sudden power loss and inability to accelerate while driving, including on highways at speed. This creates immediate danger to myself, passengers, and other drivers when the vehicle unexpectedly loses power during traffic situations requiring acceleration or merging. Problem Reproduction: The failure has been confirmed and reproduced by authorized Hyundai dealership three separate times: - [XXX]: P0768 error, replaced shift control solenoid valve - [XXX]: Same P0768 error returned, replaced entire transmission control unit - [XXX]: Same P0768 error again, replaced complete control wiring harness with extensive dashboard removal Warning Signs: Each failure was preceded by transmission hesitation, rough shifting, and check engine light activation before complete power loss occurred. Manufacturer Inspection: Hyundai technical assistance case #[XXX] was opened for the third failure, acknowledging the recurring nature of this defect despite multiple repair attempts. Assessment: This appears to be a systematic manufacturing defect in the transmission control system affecting safety. Despite three different repair approaches by Hyundai, the identical P0768 error continues to recur, suggesting a fundamental design or manufacturing flaw that creates ongoing safety risks for drivers. The vehicle was out of service for 44 total days across these three incidents, indicating the severity and complexity of this recurring safety defect. The ac blower keeps going out I looked it up and a lot of people are having the same problem my ac keep having to buy blowers and they last 1 week before they stop working and they are not cheap my blower keeps going out and my electric in my car keeps messing up when I try to put the ac up it goes up then goes down I don’t know what’s wrong but I looked it up and a lot of people have the same problem
Without warning, symptoms of the A/C blower not working first occurred a little over a month ago. The fan just stopped blowing altogether (no cold or hot air). After turning the car and the A/C system on and off several times, it began working again and that was it. This past week, the same issue occurred intermittently over 3-4 days. The A/C blower did not come on for a day, the next morning it was functioning, that evening it stopped blowing again, and this went on for several days. Research of the symptoms via YouTube and many online forums, and most importantly confirmation through visual inspection of the fuse box, confirmed that the BLOWER fuse is burning so bad it has melted the connecting port in the fuse box. Whatever the electrical malfunction, the fuse burning and melting is disrupting the connection and ultimately the A/C blower itself. In the dead of such a hot and humid summer, it has been insufferable having to ride around with such inconsistent and intermittent air conditioning.
Whille driving back to Washington state my car check engine light came on and the car shut off while I was driving. I had to have it towed to the nearest city whi ch was Laramie Wyoming. There is no Hyundai dealer had to drive the car once it started back up to Cheyenne Wyoming it was checked. My on star told me there was a problem DTC P0145100 the status had red triangle the DTC power system powertrain and the DTC sub system EMS. I was told and given paperwork by the dealer and was told the car would need major repairs and could take up to 21 days once the work started it would have to he completed there because Hyundai had campaign dealing with my cars problem. I was told I could drive the car home but if the check engine light is flashing pull over immediately. My car is now at the 3rd dealer when I took it to Korum in Puyallup they did not have anyone to diagnose the vehicle only update onboard computer. They said and documented nothing was wrong with the vehicle which is inaccurate. I told Korum about the paperwork from the dealer in Cheyenne they did not so much as look at it. I took the car to the Dealership in Auburn Washington they to had the same findings as Wyoming also there was additional findings which corresponded with the smell of gas and my tank going empty after filling and trying to fill tank because was showing low fuel warning. Pictures were taken of the gas tank which had expanded as well as other pictures of the findings. I was told in Wyoming and Auburn that the code and findings are consistent with the Hyundai campaign
The HVAC blower motor and related electrical components (including the fuse box, wiring harness, or control module) have malfunctioned. The system either fails to operate entirely or works only on low, with unpredictable surging airflow. These components are still installed in the vehicle and available for inspection upon request. For the past five days, my family has been driving without a functioning air conditioner in extreme Oklahoma summer heat. This is not only uncomfortable but unsafe, especially for my young child who regularly rides in the vehicle. In addition, without reliable airflow, we are unable to defog the windshield in humid conditions, which significantly reduces visibility and increases the risk of a crash. The inability to regulate cabin temperature and airflow poses a serious safety hazard. Yes, the issue has been observed by the dealership during service visits. However, Hyundai has denied goodwill repair assistance and has not formally acknowledged the defect, despite Technical Service Bulletins and numerous similar reports from other owners. Yes, the vehicle has been inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealership as part of a multi-point inspection. No warning lamps or dashboard messages appeared. However, symptoms began nearly a month ago and have persisted, including intermittent blower operation, limited airflow regardless of settings, and occasional surging. While I have not personally noticed a burning smell, I’ve found numerous reports from other 2020–2021 Sonata owners describing complete blower failure and smoke smells, often tied to fuse box or electrical issues.
Something went wrong in the fuel tank that caused it to become so pressurized that the tank expanded up and out so far that it pushed the exhaust pipe down and my back seat of out place. The only issue I had was the car was accelerating slower than usual but it wasn’t even enough of a difference for someone who didn’t drive it every day to be able to tell. It did this for two days then the check engine light came on and it just read “powertrain”. Began slow acceleration on 06.08.2025. Check engine light came on the night of 06.09.2025. I took it to the dealership 06.10.2025. I immediately took it into the dealership and they told me the car could have exploded. There was a previous recall for the fuel pump that I had replaced at the dealership. After seeing my car, they said their techs and the techs at HMA have never seen one this bad and that maybe after replacing the recall part the system update failed in my vehicle and the issue was never actually resolved.
I received a notice in the mail my car needed a software update. I went to the dealership to have the update performed. They informed me there was a service campaign for an expanding fuel tank due to pressure. They were unable to return my car to me at that time stating they were awaiting direction from Hyundai Motor of America for the fix. The fuel tank expanded so much it bent the body of of the car underneath the backseat. It also broke the support straps. The dealership stated it was a known issue with a vent valve. Causing the fuel tank to swell so much it damaged the body. They have had my vehicle for 9 weeks with no direction as to what to next.
It was about 100 degrees outside yesterday, and while trying to pass a car, I look in my rearview mirror and notice there is fuel shooting out from my fill hose under my gas flap. I lost over 3 gallons of fuel on the road. This happened my whole 60 mile trip. This has happened to me before, but the temperature was around 76 degrees and it does not happen in cold weather. I have a feeling my fuel tank is expanding because when I took out my back seat where my fuel tank is located, the body of the car is all buckled up to the point where I can't get my backseat to latch down anymore. My car is available anytime for inspection upon request. I have not taken it to a dealer to get it looked at, there has not been a police report filed. And there were no warning lights or indicators other than a popping sound coming from my backseat area before the problem occurred. There are no warning lights or indicators after the problem either. I feel like I'm driving a bomb because my fuel tank could blow up at any time. This problem can be reproduced anytime by filling the tank and driving it in 90 degree weather.
I experienced an issue where the gas tank in my 2020 Sonata began to swell and emit loud popping noises while the vehicle was parked. I took it to the dealership, and Hyundai corporate eventually acknowledged the issue and agreed to buy out my loan. However, no official recall has been issued for this model year. This problem has had a major impact on my life. I lost my job due to not having transportation for over two months, and the stress of not knowing whether my vehicle was safe made it even worse. I had to upgrade my insurance for a loaner I never received, take financial hits, and go into deeper credit trouble—all while also recovering from a serious injury from a previous car accident. I now have to start over with a new loan while my credit is already damaged. I’m submitting this report not just for myself, but to ensure that other 2020 Sonata owners are protected and made aware of this issue. I believe this is a serious defect that warrants official investigation.
So I was driving down the highway and I went to pass a car, (I never get close when passing) I was probably at least a quarter mile away from the car I was passing. I have every safety feature turned off, as I have, since buying the car almost 2 years ago. All of a sudden, I’m not sure if my sensor was off or what, but I’m assuming it thought I was too close to that car and it just started swerving all over the highway. I went left/right 4 times before I was finally able to regain control, I couldn’t couter-act the swerves, nor could I hold my steering wheel straight to stop them. Luckily there were very few people on the highway as it was early in the morning. Had the time of day been different, I probably wouldn’t be here today, and some others probably wouldn’t be either, at least lots of injuries I’m sure. It hasn’t been confirmed, i don’t even know how to do that honestly, I was the only one in the car. I didn’t call anyone/say anything until right now because I was already running late for work, I was shaken up but I just called my parents and they said to look up recalls/file a report, which it seems like this is how I do it? There were no warning signs, nothing, I was driving for already about 30 minutes and everything was fine, never had any issue like this ever before. Like I said I’ve had this car for almost 2 years and she has been an absolute dream, aside from this mishap. But now I am very terrified to drive it, i don’t know what happened honestly, I don’t know what could have caused it, but this is why I hate smart cars. My safety was put at risk by what I assume was a safety feature malfunction of some kind.
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that after shifting into reverse(R), the back over prevention camera screen temporarily displayed an image before the screen went black. The contact stated that the failure had become a recurring failure, but recently became a constant failure. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a dealer or independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 64,000.
My 2020 Hyundai Sonata has a recurring defect in its engine or transmission, causing sudden deceleration to ~10 mph without warning, often on major highways, with warning lights (check engine, ESC, traction control, etc.) flashing seconds before the car decelerates. This forces me to swerve off busy roads, endangering me, my passengers, and other drivers. Near-misses with traffic pose an extreme safety risk, causing significant emotional distress. The car, at a Hyundai dealer since April 21, 2025, is available for NHTSA inspection. The issue began in January 2021, five months after purchase, with all the warning lights appearing during incidents along with rapid deceleration. The Hyundai dealer confirmed the problem in seven repair attempts (January 2021, December 2021, January 2022, November 2024, February 2025, and twice in April 2025) but never properly diagnosed or fixed it, citing no consistent diagnostic codes. Only the dealer assessed it; no inspections by Hyundai’s manufacturer, police, or insurance occurred. In November 2024, the defect recurred immediately after pickup, despite false assurances it was fixed. In February 2025, the dealer kept the car over a month with minimal communication, yet it failed again. I picked up the car on April 4, 2025, but it broke down on April 6, less than 55 hours later. I returned it April 7 and picked it up April 17, and it failed again on April 21, 2025 with the vehicle remaining at the dealer since. The dealer and Hyundai offer no solution and this dangerous issue keeps recurring. Similar NHTSA complaints suggest a broader issue. Rapid recurrences—hours after April 4 and four days after April 17—prove the car is unsafe and assurances of repairs are untrustworthy. I no longer trust the Sonata or Hyundai’s repairs, as the defect persists.
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact became aware that the frame on the front driver's seat was cracked. The contact inspected the seat. The contact lifted the cushion and became aware that the bolts were cracked. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 34,458.
My wife and son experienced a terrible situation on the way home from training. They had to stop at the nearest gas station due to the vehicle showing extremely low gas in the tank during a short drive home. The fuel gauge initially showed about half a tank but drastically dropped on the way home. They stopped at a gas station to add fuel but during the process, fuel starting spewing out of the tank. The vehicle was scheduled to be dropped off at a later date for an open recall (service campaign 9B1). I called the dealership and told them I needed to get the vehicle in right away due to the incident. After bringing the vehicle to hyundai, they told me that the fuel tank exploded causing the tank to swell all the way around. Because the tank is located under the rear seat, we constantly heard air coming in due to the rear seat not seating properly. The check engine also was on and we smelled fuel while driving the vehicle. Hyundai representatives has been avoiding my calls to the point where I had to go in person for an update. Apparently, a district manager had to come inspect the vehicle to advise the dealership how to write up the request to send to corporate.
My 2020 Hyundai Sonata has a recurring and dangerous defect involving sudden deceleration while driving. Without warning, the car abruptly slows to ~10 mph—often on the highway—while numerous dashboard warning lights activate. This poses an extreme safety risk to me, my passengers, and other drivers, as it forces me to maneuver off the road to avoid being hit. The issue began in January 2021, still with less than 4,000 miles and just five months after I purchased the car new. It has occurred repeatedly and unpredictably since then. I have taken the vehicle to a Hyundai-authorized dealer for repair on five occasions (January 2021; December 2021; January 2022; November 2024; and February 2025), but the problem has never been properly diagnosed or fixed. In November 2024, the issue occurred immediately as I drove off the dealer's lot, having been assured the vehicle was repaired and safe to drive. The most recent visit lasted over a month, yet the dealer could not replicate the problem and returned the car to me in early April 2025, without a clear resolution. The vehicle is currently in my possession and available for inspection. Each incident is accompanied by multiple warning lights (e.g., check engine, ESC, etc.) but no consistent diagnostic codes have been found. I’ve also found multiple similar complaints from other Sonata owners on the NHTSA site, suggesting this may be a broader issue. This unresolved defect has made the vehicle unsafe to drive and caused significant emotional distress. I no longer trust the car or the assurances from Hyundai or the dealer that it is fixed.

This most recent occurrence (February 2025) before tonight's incident on April 6, 2025, the dealer had my vehicle for over a month. During this time, communication was seldom initiated by the dealer. Now the problem recurred less than 55 hours after picking the vehicle up from the Hyundai certified dealer, who told me the issue was fixed and the car looks and runs great. Unfortunately I found myself in this dangerous situation despite the dealer's reassurances and Hyundai's involvement overseeing the repair process. The unsafe, defective Sonata is currently in my possession as I figure out next steps. Each incident is accompanied by multiple warning lights (e.g., check engine, ESC, etc.) but the dealer represents that no consistent diagnostic codes have been found. I’ve also found multiple similar complaints from other Sonata owners on the NHTSA site, suggesting this may be a broader issue. On or about November 13, 2024 our Hyundai Sonata 2020 gas tank almost exploded. We drove our vehicle to a dealership so that it could be checked because we kept hearing something that sounded like a loud pop / thumb underneath our vehicle. We had already been receiving notifications of a powertrain issue with the vehicle for years (without the dealership resolving the issue). So we were taking the vehicle in for numerous reasons when, the minute we drove our vehicle into the service bay (of a new and unrelated dealership) we were told that Hyundai's Corporate branch has ordered our vehicle grounded and told us we COULD NOT LEAVE with our vehicle or drive our vehicle off the dealership's lot. We were advised that our vehicle had almost exploded and that we were lucky to have brought the vehicle in. We were told that our vehicle should have never left the lot the day we purchased it brand new. We were told that our vehicle's backseats had detached and separated away from the frame of the vehicle. Our vehicle has been at the dealership since the day of the incident (e.g., on or about November 13, 2024). Our vehicle is still under factory warranty and powertrain warranty and Hyundai was not given us an end in sight or advised the public of the issue with their vehicles. WE were told that the vehicles needs repairs such as: 1. The vehicle needs the fuel tank assy and all of the parts for the tank, check valve, and campaign sticker: Please see TSB: 24-01-02OH
Service Campaign 9B1 That my gas tank has explanded/exploded due to the issue noted in the subject line. As you can see the whole bottom of the backseats have been raised up imcluding the part that connects to the gas tank itself. My car is immobilized and not drivable during this time. What is the next step to take?
Fuel system expanded back seat
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at 35 MPH, the vehicle made a booming sound. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact then started to hear the sound outside the vehicle and noticed that the vehicle was losing gasoline very quickly. The vehicle started to stall, and the gas tank was almost empty when the contact arrived home. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed with floor damage, and the floor damage showed deformation on the rear passenger’s seat, and the fuel cover had popped off due to the deformation, which caused the noise in the cabin. The vehicle was towed to another dealer where the vehicle was repaired, with a new fuel pump cover, and the rear seats were replaced. On another occasion, the fuel pump failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 77,524.
I took my car in for a standard oil change and tune up. They found out that the fuel tank had expanded to the point where it caused significant damage to the metal frame. The Hyundai dealership sent it to the local body shop for an estimate for the frame, they sent it back because the dealership hadn't removed the gas tank, then the dealership sent it back to the body shop. It's been 3+ weeks, my car is still in the shop, and I haven't received any indication of whether my car is able to be fixed. The dashboard never displayed any warning messages and there were no symptoms of the problem. I had no idea the gas tank had expanded and could've caused an explosion or fire.
My 2020 Hyundai Sonata SE (82931 miles at the time) has experienced repeated issues with the front passenger window. The window would get stuck while attempting to operate it, accompanied by a loud, crushing noise. Upon visiting the dealership, I was informed that the issue stemmed from the window regulator, which had failed internally and required replacement. Additionally, my girlfriend, who owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata SEL with approximately 31,000 miles, is now facing the exact same problem with her vehicle’s front passenger window. After conducting research on online forums, I discovered that several other 2020 Hyundai Sonata owners are reporting similar issues with their window regulators. This suggests that the problem may not be isolated to just one or two vehicles but could point to a potential widespread defect. Although this issue primarily affects the operation of the window, it could lead to safety risks if the window gets stuck in an open position, exposing occupants to potential theft, weather elements, or other hazards. I am requesting the NHTSA investigate this matter to determine if the window regulator failure in 2020 Hyundai Sonata models is a systemic defect that warrants further action, such as a recall or manufacturer response. I am happy to provide additional information or documentation, such as repair invoices, dealership statements, or records of the issue. Thank you for addressing this concern.
Been having an issue with a check engine light and a popping noise in the from the front of the vehicle for about two years. Took it to the dealership more than 3 times over that span and every time they discovered it was caused by something different..during the July of 2024 while driving on the interstate a loud pop noise was made from the back and my children complain about the seat lifting…shortly after I went to get gas and a full tank was more gallons than usual 14 increased to 17g…. I once again took it to the dealer for the issue of the gas tank expansion and pop but found nothing. No more than a week later my car would hesitate to accelerate and progressively got worse. On 12/27/24 I took it to the dealer and they discovered my gas tank was expanded and was unsafe to drive leaving me without a vehicle.as of 1/04/2025 I still have no solution.
Heated seat burned through causing smell and potential burn of driver.
My Passenger window fell down and will not go up, It is available for inspection upon request. Safety Risk is that the window is being help up by tape and if it falls all of a sudden while driving could break the glass and spread inside as well as cause object to fly out of the vehicle. This has not been inspected by the manufacturer or anyone No warning lamps or messages. I put my window down and then it never went back up and motor was just running and probably made it worse
I took my vehicle in for an oil change and was advised that my car failed a recall. The PCV valve failed. After the dealership, explain this problem to me I no longer feel safe driving this vehicle. Imagine being told that the fuel tank can expand and pop up the backseat of your vehicle at any given moment or even cause the car to blow up and no warning lights coming on to alert you that this part had a defect.
while driving my car on 3 different days the car slowed down, and the lights came EPB on, on the dashboard the EPB light came on the check engine light came on , forward collision light, auto hold light, slippery road light , and caution light with a ! mark.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The Fuel Tank expanded, was leaking gas from the gas tank opening. The expansion of the tank caused the metal plates/panel under the back seat to popup, where my child sits. Which caused a gap in the door. ir seepage from the back seat passenger door to where the fuel was leaking out the gas tank and also the fuel gauge on the dash was fluctuating. People on the highway was flagging me to let me know fuel was leaking. The fire department had to come and clear it. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? My child and I could have been seriously injured or killed. As well as people on the highway. It could have exploded. You can smell the gas in the car. The gas was coming out the gas tank on the side. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, it was confirmed by Hyundai of North Charleston 8485 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston SC, 29406 and it was also checked by the insurance adjustor. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? It was inspected by the Insurance representatives State Farm Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No I took it into the dealer and they said it was fixed and it did not fix the gas coming out the tank. And the same issue happened again on [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I believe the transmission malfunctioned as I reached 60 MPH / 4000 RPMs on the highway when it suddenly did not want to accelerate past that. The more I stepped on the gas pedal, the more it slowed down. I attempted to use the paddle shifters to shift up or down, but I was unable to shift up and shifting down did not allow me to accelerate past 4000 RPMs. The flow of traffic was faster than I could keep up with, and not being able to accelerate made it unsafe to be on the highway. I had to pull over, and get off of the highway. I found that others have reported this same issue online with the same make/model/trim, but I have not had time to take it in to be looked at. No warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to failure. I only noticed when I got on the highway and needed to reach speeds greater than 60 MPH. Turning the car off, waiting a bit, then starting it again seems to have resolved the issue, but I am still uneasy with this having happened so suddenly. I fear the issue may return in the future based on what I have read online. The car is available for inspection upon request.
I have the Chicco Fit360 and the magnetic chest clip is no longer magnetic it was coming apart with little to no movement. I would buckle the chest clip and then move it to put it in position and it would come apart. I know this is a common problem with this particular car seat and something needs to be done before a child dies or gets seriously injured because the chest clip comes apart while driving!

I was driving back from Atlanta, GA to Pensacola, FL when we noticed our fuel level dropping significantly. We stopped in West Point, GA to see what was going on. We turned the car off and back on after 3 minutes and car made a weird vibration. Then the fuel level was rising back to normal but my wife was in the backseat with our [XXX] and she noticed the seat was rising and creating a lot of heat. We pulled over again and noticed it wasn't going down. Luckily there was a mechanic at this gas station and he informed us that the fuel tank expanded and to NOT drive the vehicle. We we're driving alongside my parents so we got in their car and drove back to Pensacola to get a truck and tow attachment cause a tow truck would've costed us $2,500 to tow back to Pensacola. The component that failed is the fuel tank system. While driving, the fuel tank expanded, causing significant damage to the rear section of the vehicle. This issue resulted in the rear seat rising up, and the bottom rear seat cushion detaching from its securing clamps. The check engine light came on, and gas started leaking from the fuel cap. The fuel tank has moved upward by about 3 to 5 inches, no longer resting on the factory fuel tank straps. The sheet metal underneath the rear seat was crumpled, and the fuel pump access cover bent. The vehicle is currently at College Park Hyundai and is available for inspection upon request. My safety and the safety of my children were significantly compromised. The loud popping noise startled us, and the fact that the rear seat lifted and detached posed a serious risk to the passengers in the back seat. Additionally, the gas leak created a fire and explosion hazard, putting all occupants of the vehicle and other drivers on the road at serious risk. This incident potentially violates the Fuel System Integrity (49 CFR 571.301) regulation, which ensures that a vehicle's fuel system is designed to prevent leaks and fire hazards. Moreover, the unexpected movement and detachment of the rear seat could be a breach of Occupant Protection (49 CFR 571.207 and 571.208), which govern the safety of seating systems and occupant crash protection. The issue has been confirmed by the service center at College Park Hyundai, where the vehicle is currently being inspected and evaluated. The vehicle is being inspected by the manufacturer’s authorized service center at College Park Hyundai. It has not yet been inspected by police or insurance representatives at this time. The check engine light came on immediately after the loud popping noise and the detachment of the rear seat cushion. Additionally, the gas gauge suddenly dropped to empty after the incident, even though the tank was not empty prior to the malfunction.
Gas tank replaced three times and failed each installation (excess pressure)leaked gas with riders in car. I was a LYFT driver .YES car can be seen at MAUI HYUNDAI SERVICE DEPT 260 HANA Highway. Kahului, HI. 96732 Car needs another gas tank and Manager at Service Dept tells me there is only one gas tank available, the type we installed. FARMERS INSURANCE HAS SEEN PHOTOS OF THE BAD GAS TANK. The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal gasoline odor inside the vehicle, after which the vehicle lost motive power. The contact pulled over to the shoulder of the roadway, moved the rear seat, and observed that the fuel pump was protruding upwards. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the purge valve, resulting in damages to the fuel pump and fuel tank. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 47,000.
I had the check engine light come on about 4 times in my 2020 Hyundai Sonata 1.6L this year in 2024. I took the car to a technician to get looked at each time it came on. The codes and bulletins kept pointing to fuel system issues. Each time, every service tech said it was a small issue and claimed to fix the issues. The final time a tech seen it lifted the rear seat and found out that the gas tank expanded and the back seat buckled up. The backseat metal frame is bent and messed up. I was flagged down by several drivers ?that noticed gasoline leaking from my driverside rear. My child and I were in dang? er and had to pull on the side of a major highway and stay several hours until someone picked us up. The problem has been confirmed by the hyuandi service center. They said another vehicle experienced this same issue. I was in fear for my life and my child's life because it could have caught fire and/or exploded.
Blower motor stopped working. Same issue has now happened on my 2021 Hyundai Sonata Limited. I have been waiting now three months to have my 2020 Sonata to be fixed. Hyundai technician said the wiring harness had a crack and it’s why my 2020 Sonata’s Blower motor stopped working. It’s now three months since they diagnosed and ordered the wiring harness but supposedly it’s still on back order and I’m left with a hot car this entire summer and possibly a cold car come this winter. Now it looks like I will have the same issue with my 2021 Hyundai Sonta Limited leaving me with two cars without A/C or Heat.
There is an issue with the 2020+ Hyuandai sonatas and Kia K5 models. The valves in my gas tank had failed. Causing pressure and gas vapors to be trapped inside the tank. The pressure in my tank has swollen my gas tank to the point where it’s bent the metal frame underneath my backseat, lifting my backseat off its base. My car is a literal tricking time bomb because the tank will eventually burst. There’s also a strong smell of gas coming from underneath the backseat. There’s been a new story on this issue already. Kia has acknowledged the issue and did recalls. Hyundai has not. Many owners of the Sonata are having this same exact issue according to Reddit posts. I took my vehicle to the dealer, got it diagnosed, was quoted $2900+. I was told it was an extreme safety hazard due to the pressure in the tank and the gas leak. The tank has swollen so much that it’s pressing against the exhaust. I’m out of warranty and they expect me to pay out of pocket. I have no where near $3000. I use my car for work and have no choice but to drive it. Please help.
(August 29th) My girlfriend and I were driving in my 2020 Sonata, when the check engine light turned on and my gas gauge dropped from being full to then only half way. About an hour later, driving back home we heard a loud pop as if something exploded. Next day, I took my car to the Autonation Hyundai dealership and after taking a look at my car they quoted me about $6,000 to get my fuel tank and charcoal canister replaced. Our safety was put at risk due to the fact that had the damage been any worse, it could have caused the car to possibly explode or give out while driving on the highway, and in turn would put many more lives at risk.
Gas tank is swelling causing the rear seats to pop up
Improperly seated strip fuse High Resistance Connection on the IG-2 40amp blower motor fuse receptacle causing melting of plastic fuse box components and ultimately failure of blower motor circuit and potentially loss of other circuits. Loss of blower motor leads to loss of cabin HVAC as well as loss of front windshield defrost ability during adverse driving conditions. Not only does this pose a potential electrical fire hazard, but a safety hazard due to inability to clear windshield from loss of defrost feature. Brief research finds this to be a very common problem with these vehicles. Manufacturer's recommendation is complete replacement of engine bay wiring harness. Problem begins as intermittent, but leads to total circuit failure over time if not identified.
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that upon exiting the vehicle during a rainstorm, she became aware that water had filled the interior of the rear driver's side door panel, which began to leak when the door was open. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to determine how the water was entering the door panel. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 47,000.
Took a trip to Nashville so I left Memphis Saturday morning hole on the road heading to Nashville I was at least 30 minutes fork the city my car began to jerk very bad suddenly my file light came on so I stopped at a gas station the file light came on telling me I needed gas the had was on the E but my mileage to e said 117miles. So I was like ok that’s weird after I put gas in my car I got back on the road my gas hand went from full to half way and I was not even on the road for 40 minutes so as we get closer to Nashville my car starts jerking very bad I hear a noise that sounded like a bag or a piece of paper being crumbled up I turn around to find my rear seat up in the air I knew it was not normal at all looks like it was a lot of pressure for the frame of a car to stand up like that I definitely knew something was wrong when that happened I instantly started to smell gas very loud smell of gas I then start to do my research and I see Kia’s and Hyundais are dealing with gas tank expansions so at this point I am scared for my life I’m in my car and I’m dealing with a issue like this. I instantly call my dealership and schedule to have my car towed to the dealership out in Nashville. They called me that Monday confirming the gas take had expanded and caused a significant amount of floor damage to my vehicle I am currently waiting trying to see what is Hyundai going to do about this issue that is my only transportation and having to deal with this then find another way back home has been very stressful and just to know that I could have lost my life in that car is even more traumatic
Fuel tank has expanded to the point that my vehicle is deemed not safe to drive. As pressure in the tank is unable to be stabilized. Only had the car for about 70 days since the date of purchase. Repairs are about $3900. In short as told by the dealership service department, my car could blow up at any time. This is not safe, at all.
Multi fuse controlling the A/C blower has burned out 3 times in the past year.
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal gasoline odor inside the vehicle. The contact then heard a loud pop and pulled over to the shoulder of the roadway. After a visual inspection, the contact observed gasoline leaking from the fuel tank filler neck, even though the access door and gas cap were both securely closed. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the canister purge valve, causing the fuel tank to swell, resulting in damages to the fuel pump. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 47,000.
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH, there was a booming sound heard and suddenly there was an abnormal fuel odor inside the cabin of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who replaced a fuel sensor. The contact stated that later, while driving, the rear seats started to raise up, and became extremely hot. The contact parked to inspect the vehicle and discovered that the fuel tank had expanded underneath the vehicle. Due to the failure, the rear seats became burned and melted. The cause of the failure was not yet determined, and the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 52,000.
Riding down the road June 30, 2024 and heard a loud boom coming from the back of my car. I pulled to the side of the road and walked around but saw no damage to outside of car. When I was approximately 30 miles from home my gas started dropping tremendously. Once arriving at home it was a rumble coming from rear of car after inspecting outside car and seeing no damage again, I looked in my back seat and the rear seat was lifted. If my kids or any other occupants would have been back there it could have possibly caused injuries. Upon my mechanic looking my car over they told me it was something to do with my fuel tank. My appointment is July 16, 2024 Hyundai of Dothan in Dothan al for farther diagnosis. My safety was in danger as explosion from the fuel tank could have cause serious damage and/or injury to car and self. Check engine light came on once the fuel consumption started dropping tremendously.
A week before my gas tank expanding I heard a loud popping noise. When driving from NC to DC, my gas tank refused to take gas and my car immediately went to empty. I was stranding on the highway and has my 2020 Hyundai towed to the Hyundai dealership in Chesterfield, VA. They told me that my gas tank expanded and my back seats had popped out of place.
I was on my way back home from Alexandria LA on [XXX] when I heard like the sound of an blow out tire but wasn’t happen to look in back of car and seen back seat was blown off the area of the car and proceeded to see that the gas tank was expanded like you would see a balloon and the me car started running funny and. Then a service code comes across the screen of the radio po45100 , so I pull over and look beneath the car and see that the gas tank is so expanded it’s now pressing against the exhaust pipe. So I turned car off and here we are now I’m without a car due to this. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
It looks like the fuel tank has expanded. My back seats are now lifted & will not push down.
I have a 2020 Hyundai Sonata SEL Plus. For the past month I been dealing with my CEL regarding Fuel Tank Pressure sensor and I end up replacing one from hyundai itself. After doing that I notice my fuel tank has expanded and I’m currently dealing with Hyundai & the dealership to see if they can make a recall regarding this issue or just fix it period since it’s a big safety concern. This been happening since mid April. My back seat lifts up from time to time and my fuel pump cover is bent. Below I’ll add some pictures so you guys can see how my tank straps are actually bent which is very uncommon for it to happen. I recently took it to the dealer last week after reaching out to hyundai corporate and they took pictures and send it for prior approval to see if hyundai is willing to replace this. I can’t fill up my gas tank, I constantly have to out between $15-$25 the most due to fuel mileage issue since the tank has expanded I get fuel mileage inconsistency
Driving 55mph on highway car slows down and make a pop nose and back seat comes up and I start to smell gas
An independent service center advise us that the gas tank had expanded which could have put my family at risk if exploding or catched on fired. This happend on June 15th 2024 while driving, a sudden explosion coming from the back of the car was heard. Little after the explosion like sound we perceived as if air was coming through the back as if we had a window rolled down. When pulled to check, i notice that the back seat was popped up. No warning on the car was giving prior to the incident. Will take car to Hyundai dealership to have it inspect by them and have a solution.
I was driving on the interstate when I heard a click from the back of the car. The gas gauge started to move downward as if I was losing gasoline. It eventually stopped and started moving back up, past where it was when it started decreasing. A little bit later the check engine light came on and the car started driving very sluggishly. I took the car into the Hyundai dealer and they found that the backseat was clicked out of place and a sensor was unplugged. This issue has since occurred multiple times. The back seat will pop out of place, the gas gauge will move beyond the gas that is in the tank, and finally the check engine light will come on and reduce the performance of the vehicle. The gas tank appears to be swelling and pushing up against the back seat which is causing it to pop. I had my girlfriend drive the car while I sat in the backseat and I could actually feeling something moving underneath the backseat. I have since gotten in contact with other sonata owners who have had the same thing happen with their vehicles. In other cases the backseat has exploded and flown completely off of the gas tank. I am very nervous to drive my car and think Hyundai should recall these vehicles before someone gets hurt.
Summary: The gas tank on this vehicle blew up/expanded rapidly to the point it could have erupted into a gasoline vapor fireball, killing the occupants of the vehicle or others. According to two Hyundai dealers, a failure in a check valve and the vehicle ECU programming caused pressurized air from the engine to be pumped into the gas tank, causing it to expand to the point of explosively popping out all of the sheet metal under the back seat. One Hyundai dealer service technician described the vehicle as, quote, 'a ticking time bomb'. There was no check engine light or warning at the time of this explosive event, although one occurred later. Hyundai has not offered to repair this vehicle. Please note that this potentially deadly issue is already well known to Hyundai/Kia. The Sonata has a sister vehicle from Kia that is the same vehicle platform called the K5. Kia issued a service campaign to address this extremely dangerous issue in April (TSB: SC288 K5 (DL3a) April 2024) which reads in part: "The subject vehicles may experience fuel tank swelling due to an issue with the PCSV check valve, which results in pressurized air to flow into the fuel tank." In addition, at last check an investigative reporter in Charlotte, NC has identified numerous Hyundai and Kia vehicles in which this has occurred. There's likely far more people who have already had this occur, and potentially thousands or hundreds of thousands of vehicles with this potentially deadly condition. (See: wsoctv.***/news/local/kia-acknowledges-gas-tanks-swelling-suddenly-offers-free-fix) As stated above, Hyundai has not offered to fix my vehicle. Please immediately take steps to force the manufacturer to remedy this extremely dangerous condition for all affected owners before someone is injured or killed.
The fuel tank under the backseat expanded forcing the backseat up and causing the muffler to scrape the ground. The expansion of the fuel tank could have exploded due to extreme pressure. Vandergriff Hyundai in Arlington, TX has inspected the vehicle and confirmed component failures in the fuel system. The vehicle has been inspected and currently in the process of being repaired at the dealership. The check engine light was illuminated to warn of component failures approximately six weeks ago.
Vechile shut down completely on the highway, engine's been replaced twice, Catalytic converter, Turbo was replaced three times, Battery oxygen sensors, timing belt all have been replaced, Along with my wireless charger and Both heaterhouses and splash guard. I recently had my vehicle SERVICED Thirty five hundred miles after NEW engine install The dealership serviced my car didn't reset my service indicator 3 weeks later, my vehicle without warning said Engine overheated, so I pulled over immediately that display went off. My actual thermostat stayed under the center line in between cold and hot. I contacted the dealership and got my vehicle into BE inspected At that time, they said my coolant level was low and both heapeer. Hoses needed to be replaced and my engine needed to be flushed and refilled. I had those services completed. I picked up my car 5/24 it was OK on 5/25 My service indicator pop back on and at that time it was counting 58 days, so even after I brought it to the dealership's attention, they failed to reset it again. So I googled how to reset the service interval and did it myself. And about thirty minutes later, I was driving my car started shaking excessively And Woodin's accelerate, over 20 miles per hour in traffic. I had to put on my hazard lights and get me and my grandson to a safe place so that I could contact the dealership regarding this matter and they stated there was nothing they could do I had to wait until Tuesday I have put in a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, as well as consumer affairs. And also the county attorney's office for. Consumer fraud. This vehicle was misrepresented at the time of sale. It has countless safety issues. I need assistance
My vehicle is missing it's third brake light. We have confirmed that it was forgotten during manufacturing. The dealer won't cover it. They say call corporate. Corporate says dealer has to fix it. In the mean time I'm pulled over for improper equipment, and brake light being out. It's a serious safety issue, covered by federal law. They quoted over $1000 to have it fixed at my expense.
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the shift assists malfunction warning light illuminated. The contact turned the vehicle off and restarted the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer; however, the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 21,000.
While driving at about 45mph a warning flashed on my dash. I couldn't read it before it disappeared, but it was something about front collision., contact dealer. the car immediately lost all power. Everything was still running, but I had no acceleration. I had to back down a busy road into a vacant lot. I had just come off of the highway when this happened, if I had still been driving on the Highway, I would have been hit by a car from behind, since there was no warning at all. The car was towed to a Hyundai dealership. After a diagnosis, it was said to be the Throttle body. I had to wait for the repair because the part was on back order. I was told that there was another car there waiting on the same part. I am afraid to drive the car now, even though the repair was made. I feel this is a safety hazard, and that someone could be injured or killed because of this issue with the car.

A lot of these models have wind coming through the door making a whistling noise, it’s very distracting to drivers and multiple people complaining about it online.
In May of 2023 my check engine light came on. Took the car to the dealer and the diagnosis was that the egr cooler was the culprit so they replaced it and everything was fine until 12/21/2023. I am driving on the highway and suddenly I hear a loud alarm and upon checking my instrument cluster I see a warning for engine overheating, the heat was on but suddenly the smell of something burning covered the entire cabin of the vehicle. I had to pull over to the side in the middle of a busy highway in freezing conditions and shut my engine down to avoid further damage. I believe the egr cooler has failed once again inly this time leading to a more terrifying experience. My car was towed to the dealership but I am worried for myself and others with similar vehicles I would not like anyone to experience what I did. I have seen multiple online forums with people complaining about the same situation. Mileage was around 57,900 miles when this occured. I bought the car with 30,000 miles as a certified preowned model. I kindly request for a recall for affected sonatas manufactured from the year 2020 to ensure our safety on the road. If it was not for warranty I would not be able to pay for the repairs
I was driving Home from work and I fell a sleep behind the wheel and Hit a park car. The police report states that my impact speed was 50mph. My insurance company is very concerned that my Air Bags or sensors are defective and that I contact you immediately. Due to the damage and impact of the accident.
Defrost doesn’t work because harness melted and blew a fuse
While exiting the vehicle there was a loud pop from under the drivers seat. Upon inspection the left front weld attaching the drivers seat to the positioning bar to raise and lower the seat bottom had failed and separated completely. This causes the front seat bottom to sit at an angle and not fully attached to the structure of the car, causing a severe safety issue in the event of an accident as the driver is not properly aligned for the airbag, the seat belt no longer aligns correctly on the body, and there is a greater risk of full seat detachment in a collision or while simply driving.
Sunroof shattered/exploded for no known reason while driving. Resulted in glass falling towards cabin of vehicle as well as loud bang.

Tonight on 7/29/2023 after driving between 5-10 miles at night with very light traffic, my dashboard flashed a message telling me "Forward Safety system disabled. Radar blocked." After receiving this message and it clearing from the digital instrument cluster, a small triangle appeared with a exclamation mark. After driving between 1 to 5 miles further down the interstate the triangle cleared from the screen. There is no damage to the grill, or sensor, and no indication of mechanical issues as I was driving down the road. The grill and sensor both also have little to no dirt as I routinely wash my car each weekI have read through multiple other comments like me stating nothing whatsoever is on the front grill that could be obstructing the sensor. And like the other complaints, if there is no warning light, there is no code stored!
Engine leaks oil. I went to the dealer and they blamed the other Hyundai dealer saying they stripped out the drain bolt. After all the back and forth they told me they will replace the drain pan. I scheduled to have the car dropped off and wasn’t given a loaner. When I went to pick up the car they told me the ac bolt and bracket are broken and to come on Monday but the drain pan has been replaced. I went home and the car continued to leak oil and when I went back to the dealer and called them out they came up with every excuse in the books. Bolt is stripped, impact to pan, and so on. Long story short I went to fix the oil pan and they damaged the ac bolt so instead of telling me to come back to do everything they said they did the drain pan but the bolt would have to be done another day. I am waiting on a loaner car as I waisted a whole day without a car and the issue wasn’t fixed. I have a receipt showing the work was done but it never was. The dealer is dishonest and unprofessional. Not sure how they get away with this. They need to be held accountable.
Hyundai updated the software for the display and made the font smaller which makes it difficult to read and a safety issue especially when driving at night. I contacted Hyundai and they say that if it is not in the owners manual there is nothing they can do. I have tried to explain to them it is a software issue that came about when their software engineers updated the software and it makes this a safety issue and they have no way to revert back to previous versions.
Exterior paint is peeling and stripping. Hood, doors, front and rear bumper, side skirts, and front lip.
Paint on hood of car is peeling off, down to bare metal
While driving my cars a light starting blinking and my engine light came on and the car lost power This has happened on at least 3 occasions and I had to pull over upon starting the car after a few hours all returned to normal I reported this to dealer and they could not find a problem
I took my vehicle into the dealership when it was under 12,000 miles for another issue and mentioned a problem with the headlight on the right fogging up with moisture. I was immediately told that this had to be seen with their eyes because light cost more than $1,000. It has continued for over 1 1/2 years. Early this month, I took a picture at night and in the morning. The service manager wanted to add another hoop; can you get a picture of the water in it? The water is droplets on the light, decreasing visibility on the road. Pictures are attached. There is one picture that shows the left headlight with no issue.
2020 HYUNDAI SONATA. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARD TO GRINDING NOISE WHILE DRIVING. THE CONSUMER STATED UPON INSPECTION BY TOYOTA, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE UNDERSHIELD HAD COME LOOSE AND DRAGGING.
2020 Sonata......Steering wheel has started to make a raspy, rubbing noise when turned. When researching this problem on U tube, it is apparently a fairly common problem with Hyundai vehicles. The fix requires that a bearing in the steering be replaced. If not replaced I would imagine that the bearing would eventually seize up and the car could not be steered. I checked with local dealership and they were not aware of the problem and couldn't tell me if it would be covered by my warranty. I only have 9500 miles on the vehicle.
The Panoramic sunroof has a line fracture crack which exploded for unknown reasons. A rock or any foreign object DID NOT hit the sunroof to cause it to shatter. Residue from the glass shattering got into my eyes. Freeman Hyundai stated that an object hit the sunroof it would not be covered under their warranty. A object did not hit the sunroof and it looks like Hyundai has a history of sunroof shattering unexpectedly. There were no warning signs prior to the sunroof shattering.
The AC Fan in my car quit working. Took it to a repair shop where I was told that the AC Blower Motor went bad. The blower motor was drawing too much amps and caused the blower motor fuse to melt into the wiring harness for the blower motor along with melting several other fuses nearby including the fuse box. The cost to repair this correctly fixing and addressing all parts damaged was $5000. Because my vehicle is out of warranty due to mileage I contacted Hyundai who stated that I had to go and pay another diagnostic fee at a Hyundai Dealership to have them look at it. They continued to tell me that the vehicle was out of warranty but would not assist in providing information to get the issue resolved at no cost to me.
Steering parts being replaced many times, and the engine oil is low after I just got an oil change a week ago. Excessive engine oil usage with no idea where it is going.
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while her husband was driving 75 MPH, the brake warning light appeared on the instrument panel as the vehicle began to hesitate upon depression of the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that the vehicle decelerated to 20 MPH as her husband pulled to the side of the highway and turned off the vehicle. The contact called the dealer and was given suggestions on how to correct the failure; however, none of the options worked. After some time, her husband restarted the vehicle and the vehicle resumed normal operation. The next day, the contact stated that the brake light returned upon start of the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 19,000.
When accelerating hard (pedal to the floor) from approximately 55 mph, the transmission may not downshift correctly and loses power causing a safety issue. When attempting to continue accelerate at full throttle, the RPMs hang while simultaneously losing vehicle speed. Other symptoms noticed were slight vehicle jerkiness from RPMs bouncing up and down a couple of hundred RPMs. When letting off of the accelerator to a "normal" depression level, the vehicle upshifts into an appropriate gear and will gain speed (though sluggish). In the same drive (meaning the ignition was not turned off then back on) , if attempting to push accelerator to the floor, the same results happen as stated before. Also in the same drive (after exiting the highway), from a stop at a red light I tested the issue again with the same results. No warning lights, messages, or other symptoms were present to indicate a malfunction. My safety was at risk because I merged onto the highway and noticed another vehicle approaching me at an unsafe pace. Due to the issue, the car had to hit their brakes hard to avoid a crash. This is also a safety risk because if it happens from a stop, the car may fail to accelerate appropriately when turning in front of traffic. The problem has not be reproduced, confirmed or inspected by anyone besides myself. A video of the issue as it occurred was recorded. This issue is not consistent and has happened twice in approximately 3 months. My Hyundai dealership's service department suggested the car may have went into "limp mode." Given the inconsistent nature of the issue, I did not schedule an appointment to have it looked at because I would have been charged if nothing was found.
I first begin having an issue with the idle speed. It would jump up to 1,500 RPM, which is twice the normal 750 RPM level It started almost from the very beginning when I purchased this car new in early 2020. I mentioned it at first oil change at dealer at 3,500 miles. I was told it was normal. In the beginning it would come and go. Sometimes not happening for weeks in-between episodes. Then it started to have the check engine light come on after it would happen and stay on. I took it back while light was still on and they kept the car for several days. Said it was the EPV valve and replaced it. Car operated fine for a few days then started up again. It also started to idle up and down from 1500 down to 500 in a rapid succession. I was able to get it to stop sometimes by turning engine off and them back on. Again I contacted dealership and took car back in. They gave me a loaner car and kept my car for over a month. This time they replaced the computer they told me. I did not have car for more than a week before it started doing it again. It has gradually gotten worse and happens more often now. It has also started to have the Forward Collision Avoidance warning come on in addition to check engine light as well. Just this week it actually just died on me while driving and forced me to pull to side of road. Turn off the engine and restart the engine. This happen 3 times in succession. Dealership does not seem to have any idea on what is going on and have been not very helpful. 3 week wait to get an appointment to bring in and no loaner cars available. This problem with the 2020 vehicle is very dangerous. It can idle up at anytime and car will lurch, requiring forceful brakeing . Car dying while driving and losing power as well.
while driving to work on 05.20.2022 my sunroof exploded for no apparent reason. I called my insurance company and they told me to take it to my dealership. so I did.
Whenever I am close to a Tesla in traffic or at a stoplight, my parking sensors go off. I believe that the frequency of my Sonata parking sensors is being interfered with by Tesla sensors. This could lead to unexpected braking in traffic. This problem has not been reproduced by a dealer or independent service center. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. Warning sensors go off.
Car is 20 months old and in that period the car has experienced on at least 3 occasions a problem with acceleration. After stopping and then attempting to accelerate the transmission had a problem engaging and increasing speed. It took probably 30-40 seconds to get from zero to 25 or so then engaged back to normal. Obviously dangerous if getting onto highway or turning in traffic. Dealership cannot replicate problem so they cannot analyze. Last instance was about 2 months ago March 2022. Similar to other incidents posted here.
- Shifter system malfunction - Unable to use the shift buttons - Received system error on dashboard that read, "Shifter malfunction! Service immediately." Visited two dealership, who saw a photo of the system error message. Vehicle was inspected by the dealership; however, no support could be given due to the dealership not having a code for the issue. - Dealership was made aware of the issue back in November 2021; however, first available appointment with technician was not until January 2022.
Steering wheel makes whining/scrubbing noise when turning. Steering a vehicle is a critical component of safety and being able to avoid dangerous situations. The problem has been reported, inspected, and confirmed by a dealer. The component has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or independent service center. There were no warning messages, lamps, or other symptoms of the problem prior to failure. The problem first appeared when the vehicle was under 15,000 miles. The dealership advised that the worm shaft assembly needs to be replaced.
The contact leased a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact state that the radar in the vehicle interacted with the radar in Ford vehicles. While parking in a parking spot there was a beeping sound detected. While at a stoplight with a vehicle in front to the side, the radar engaged when a Ford vehicle drove up. The contact stated while turning nearby another Ford vehicle the radar engaged and the driver applied the brakes. The Forward Collision-Avoidance warning light was illuminated. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 6.
On Nov. 2020 my husband and I purchased a new 2020 Hyundai Sonata with 2mls.off the showroom floor at Daytona Hyundai dealership, Daytona Beach,Fl. We moved to Ga.One day in December, I opened the driver side back door to put groceries in the backseat and I noticed water on the door frame at the bottom ,I thought maybe I might have left the window part of the way down and rain came in. a few weeks after that I went into town I was going to put groceries again in the driver side back door and water sitting on the bottom of the frame inside the door . The window was up .So this went on every time it rained. I drove my car to Rome GA at Heritage auto group they sell Hyundai’s And also service them. [XXX] in service department he’s the manager I told him about the door where I was finding water at every time that it would rain. So he told me to bring it back when I was able to leave it. For the next couple months I had a medical emergency with our son that lives in Florida when he lost eyesight. With the specialist diagnosis he had uveitis in both eyes. The first trip was in April 2021 and I 95 southbound in Florida maybe past Saint Augustine we were driving 60 miles an hour the traffic was very heavy and all three lanes, I was in the center. It was within seconds that I seen something rubber in front of me in my lane ,it could not be avoided or I would have caused a accident with other vehicles. I ran over it on the right side front bumper so my son and I decided to drive it on down to Daytona Hyundai in Daytona where we purchased it at. The manager in the service department there inspected my car all the way around and told me the damages to the right front bumper and the plastic air dam he also said that I could leave it there but they didn’t have a loaner for me & they couldn’t give me a timeframe I told him I had to get back to Georgia take care of my husband. He said that I could have it repaired up there. He did finish cutting off the plastic air-dam . INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, the front of the vehicle was wobbling. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the rotors needed to be resurfaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 11,000.
Driving on the Interstate at 65mph the car suddenly goes down to 5mph. Unwanted deceleration! At the same time the dash warning lights come on. Check engine and ABS. This happened 3 times now. 2 times on the Interstate in heavy traffic and once going 35mph on a back road. Miraculously we were able to pull over without any cars slamming into us. This unwanted deceleration happened on July 28, August 18 and Sept 13. Each time after pulling to a safe area we turned the engine off, waited a few minutes and turned it back on. Then resumed normal driving speed. Brought it to the dealer after each time. This shut down started after the car was only 4 months old with 2,983 miles on it.First time they said they couldn't find anything wrong and reset the computer, said if it happens again they will look into it more. The second time they replaced a Body Assy-Throttle and Gasket. The 3rd time they replaced the front wiring assembly control. I have all the repair paper work. We were driving playing Russian roulette wondering when it will happen again. With cars speeding around us we were lucky no one was close on our tail. This is an extremely dangerous situation. Each time it was beautiful sunny weather, two times heading to the beach, 3rd time heading to NH after 2 hrs of driving and one hour stopped, resumed driving for 20 min when it happened. No common denominator. I hope that this is not happening to others. I have reported this issue to Hyundai Motors America and they have offered me $500 and 60 days to release them from any liability or claim. Since I just got my car back finally Sept 20th, I certainly can't say my concerns have been resolved.
1.TRANSMISSION DOES NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY AT ALL TIMES. IT SLIPS FROM TIME TO TIME UPON ACCELERATION, (RIGHT AFTER DECELERATION), INCREASING THE ODDS OF A COLLISION WHEN ATTEMPTING TO AVOID OTHER VEHICLES ON A COLLISION COURSE WITH MINE. 2.NOISE FROM STEERING COLUMN 3. THREE TRIPS TO DEALER HAVE BROUGHT NO RESOLUTION
The driver seat belt pops out sometimes for reasons unknown. The speakers suddenly stop working at random times so I got lost while listening for navigation directions safely paying attention to the road instead of watching the screen for upcoming turns. And the biggest one, a few times I almost crashed into oncoming cars and guard rails because if the road has a dip the sonata decides to jerk hard to the side and overcorrect itself when lane assist is on. When the road is level it just beeps annoyingly loudly when it can't see the lines or you accidentally cross over it, but does not actively assist even tho active lane assist is on. This is a major safety issue!!!!!
The automatic shut off. When the car is locked I can run it for a total of 20 minutes with auto start, when it's unlocked I can run it for a total of 60 minutes. Sometimes because of my job I need to auto start it and run it for longer to either warm up or cool down and it is unsafe to leave it unlocked. There should be an option for me to turn off the time limit and not have it reset every time I restart the car! When I'm shopping and I need to leave my dog inside for instance and it's 91 degrees outside, I should be able to lock my car and let it run for as long as I need to be in the store without worry it will shut off with him inside and suffocate him in the heat. This is another HUGE safety issue!
The transmission since we got the vehicle has had random hard shifts. The software updates seemed to have alleviate some of the occurrences. How ever when it does happen now. The whole car shakes while at idle and shifts extremely hard. Almost like braking hard. The problem has not been reproduced at a dealership yet, taking it in ASAP for inspection. Noting relating to the power train has been replaced. Just a software update a while back. No warning lights came on the screen when it happened. My wife was going about 20 miles per hour when she tried to accelerate. It was hesitant than shifted hard, lurching forward than accelerated. When she came to a stop at the next light it was shaking the whole car.
The Contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 60 mph, the vehicle abruptly decelerated to 30 mph. The contact also stated that previously the windshield wipers failed and the driver’s side window failed to roll all the way up. The vehicle was towed to the dealer to be diagnosed. The mechanic was unable to retrieve a diagnostic trouble code. The contact stated that the dealer could repair the driver’s side window and windshield wipers. The manufacturer was contacted and informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 16,000.
Driving, car started making a weird sound followed by a warning light on dashboard with dinging sound to correlate... car became difficult to gas, vehicle motion was lagging where I just knew I had to pull over Bc this car was going to literally stop began to slowly (Bc that’s all car would allow) to proceed forward and I was forced to come to a haunt as I pulled onto side of highway. I then could no longer move it. Turned car off for minute then returned to try to start again, car would not accelerate at all nor turn on fully.. I was forced to wait hour to get a tow... took to shop, no problem such was found , car started & ran again ... this is 3 days later the car again continued the same exact pattern & I was unable to drive any further and forced to once again to get tow. This has to be something of bearings with engine, this car mode is not on list but IT certainly is an issue that I believe is related & should be rectified by Hyundai.
THE VEHICLE'S FUEL GAUGE (TYPE C) DOES NOT ACCURATELY ADJUST FOR CHANGES IN THE AMOUNT OF GAS IN A TIMELY MANNER. IT NORMALLY TAKES 2-3 DAYS FOR THE GAUGE TO MOVE TO FULL TANK EVEN THOUGH IT IS FULL. SAME PROBLEM FROM 1/4 TO 1/2 TANK, ETC. FOR EXAMPLE, I NOTICED THE PANEL SAID I HAD 11 MILES TO EMPTY ON FRIDAY. THE GAS GAUGE SHOWED OTHERWISE. I WASN'T NEAR MY USUAL FILL STATION, SO I PUT 5 GALLONS OF GAS IN THE CAR. IT IS NOW WEDNESDAY (5 DAYS LATER). THE GAS GAUGE MOVED SLIGHTLY YESTERDAY TO ALMOST 1/4 TANK, BUT THE FUEL TANK WARNING WENT FROM 11 TO 0 MILES LEFT TO EMPTY (SEE ATTACHMENT). I DROVE ON THE HIGHWAY EACH DAY AND IN THE CITY. I PURCHASED THIS CAR JULY 2020 WITH A FULL TANK. THIS PROBLEM BECAME EVIDENT IN AUG 2020. AFTER REFILLING THE TANK, THE READER SHOWED 111 MILES TO EMPTY. I INFORMED HYUNDAI AGENT OF THE ISSUE, WHO HAD NO IDEA WHY THIS WAS HAPPENING. THE GUAGE AND FUEL TANK READER FINALLY ADJUSTED AFTER ABOUT 3 DAYS. I HAD 449 MILES ON THE CAR AT THAT TIME. I NOW HAVE OVER 4,000 WITH SAME PROBLEM. APPARENTLY, SOMETHING IS FAULTY, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT. AUTO DEALER IS BAFFLED. THIS ISSUE COULD RESULT IN A REAL FUEL SHORTAGE WHILE TRAVELING WITH NO GAS STATION NEARBY.
ON NOV. 17 WHILE DRIVING APP. 65 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY THE CAR SUDDENLY SHUT ITSELF OFF. ALL OF THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS LIT UP & THE CAR WOULD NOT RESTART. AFTER 10 MIN. OF TRYING TO RESTART THE CAR, THE CAR STARTED AGAIN, & ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE CAR DISAPPEARED. THE FOLLOWING DAY, WHILE WAITING IN THE TURNING LANE AT A RED LIGHT, THE CAR SPUTTERED & TURNED OFF. ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD LIT UP & THE CAR WOULDN'T START I HAD THE CAR TOWED ON NOV 18 202 TO A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP REPORTED THAT THERE WAS AN INTERNAL SHORT WITH THE ABS MODULE & THE HYDRAULIC MODULE ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED. ON, NOV 24, I WAS DRIVING THE CAR & THE CAR STALLED ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS WENT BACK ON. I HAD THE CAR TOWED THE DEALERSHIP WHERE IT STAYED UNTIL DECEMBER 11 THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. I PICKED UP THE CAR ON DEC 11 & THE CAR APPEARED TO BE WORKING NORMALLY. HOWEVER, ON DEC19, WHILE STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT, THE CAR BEGAN TO SHAKE BACK & FORTH AT IDLE & THE RPMS STARTED TO GO UP DESPITE MY FOOT BEING ON THE BRAKES. THE CAR BEHIND ME SAW WHAT WAS HAPPENING & HELPED ME PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP YET AGAIN. THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE ISSUE ON DEC 23, 2020. HOWEVER, NO FIX WAS DONE TO THE CAR. THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMED THAT THE CAR WAS IN A 'RELEARN' PROCESS & IT WOULD NEED MORE TIME FOR THE CAR TO 'RELEARN' HOW TO DRIVE AGAIN. EVERYTHING SEEMED OKAY AFTER THE DEC 23 INCIDENT UNTIL FEB 8 2021 WHEN I TRIED TO STOP WHILE IN TRAFFIC & THE BRAKES WOULD NOT WORK AT ALL. I NARROWLY AVOIDED GETTING INTO A MAJOR ACCIDENT & ONCE AGAIN BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP FOUND THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER ASSEMBLY WAS INTERNALLY DEFECTIVE & WAS NOT HOLDING PRESSURE AND AS A RESULT THE BRAKES WERE NOT WORKING. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO ME ON FEB 11 2021.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2020 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH AND ENTERING THE HIGHWAY, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO GEAR AND THE VEHICLE WAS SPUTTERING. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT EXCEED 45 MPH. THE CONTACT PULLED ONTO THE SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY AND SHUT-OFF THE VEHICLE. NO WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACTED RESTARTED THE VEHICLE HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE CONTACT PULLED OFF THE HIGHWAY AND HAD TO RESTART THE VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER - WEBB HYUNDAI MERRILLVILLE (1000 81ST AVE MERRILLVILLE IN 46410, (219) 249-4961) WHERE THE DIAGNOSIS WAS NOT DETERMINED FOR THE ENGINE HOWEVER, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE HEATING SYSTEM WAS FAULTY AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FAILED TO PROVIDE AN ACCURATE WARNING LIGHT FOR THE FAILURES. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE BUT, DID NOT PROVIDE ANY FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,698.
THE VEHICLE'S DRIVER SIDE WINDOW IS NOT SEATED PROPERLY AND HAS EXCESSIVE WIND NOISE WHEN DRIVING. DEALERSHIP CONFIRMS THIS ISSUE ACROSS MULTIPLE MODELS IN THE 2020 AND 2021 HYUNDAI SONATA.
OCCASIONALLY THERE IS A SERIOUS DELAY WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE. CAR TENDS TO JERK/BUCK WHEN ACCELERATING, USUALLY IN THE LOWER GEARS. I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS IS A TRANSMISSION ISSUE OR A FUEL INJECTION ISSUE, BUT MY DEALERSHIP HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO DETECT AN ISSUE AND KEEPS TELLING ME EVERYTHING IS NORMAL WHEN IT CLEARLY ISN'T. THE CAR ALSO HAS HARSH DOWNSHIFTS ESPECIALLY GOING FROM 2ND TO 1ST GEAR.
2020 HYUNDAI SONATA. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO LACK OF NORMAL BLUETOOTH FUNCTIONALITY MAKING VEHICLE UNSAFE. *LD *JS
AS THE VEHICLE WAS AT A COMPLETE STOP AND WAITING FOR A CHANCE TO GET IN TRAFFIC, THE CAR HESTIATED AND WOULD NOT RESPOND TO THE DEPRESS OF THE GAS PEDAL, FOR A SECOND OR TWO... VERY STRANGE INDEED!....IS IT A TRANSMISSION ISSUE OR SOMETHING ELSE....THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS STRANGE FROM THE COMPLETE STOP POSITION...THIS HAPPENES MORE THAN ONCE! AND ONE INSTANCE IT ACTUALLY JERKED ( BUCKED) SOMEHOW...CONCERNED ABOUT THIS...
GASES FROM THE DASHBOARD HEATING CAUSE A FILM TO FORM BETWEEN THE WINDSHIELD AND THE CAMERA. BECAUSE OF THIS, IN HEAVY DIRECT SUNLIGHT, LANE KEEP ASSIST TOGGLES ON AND OFF WITHOUT WARNING CAUSING UNINTENDED LANE DEPARTURES WITH OUT WARNING. ALSO, WHEN USING SMART CRUISE CONTROL, THE VEHICLE SLOWS TO A STOP BUT MAY CONTINUE MOVING SLOWLY EVEN AFTER DISPLAYING THE PRESS GAS TO CONTINUE SCREEN. THE AUTO HOLD LIGHT DOES NOT ILLUMINATE.
WHEN STEERING THERE IS A LOUD NOISE WHEN TURNING IN EITHER DIRECTION BE IT LEFT OR RIGHT, SOMETHING IS RUBBING IN THE STIRRING COLUMN, WITH THE STIRRING HAVING FOR TO MUCH PLAY ALL MOST TURNING COMPLETELY A FULL CIRCLE I HAVE SENT IN THIS COMPLAINT ONCE BEFORE, BUT GAVE THE INCORRECT VIN NUMBER FOR MY CAR SOMETHING IS RUBBING, AND IT'S A LOUD SOUND. THE SOUND IS THERE IF WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION, OR STANDING STILL, IF YOU TURN THE STIRRING WHEEL
ON AUGUST 14TH,2020, I PURCHASED A VEHICLE FROM THE SHOWROOM FLOOR FROM CRAIN HYUNDAI OF CONWAY, ARKANSAS. THE CAR WAS AESTHETICALLY PLEASING AND ONLY HAD 46 MILES ON THE SPEEDOMETER. AT THE TIME OF THE PURCHASE I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE TERM "MODIFICATION" NOR THE RAMIFICATION ASSOCIATED WITH HAVING A VEHICLE MODIFIED. I ASSUMED THE DEALERSHIP WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING ME WITH A SAFE AND EFFICIENT VEHICLE. THE CAR HAD ADDED EQUIPMENT: CRAIN CARE PKG: $1,397.00 - WHEEL LOCKS: $89.00 - WINDOW TINT: $189.00 - BLACK OUT PACKAGE: $4,295.00, WHICH I LATER LEARNED THE AMERICAN RACING RIM #AR934 FASTLANE, DOES NOT FIT A 2020 HYUNDAI SONATA, THEY ARE 20 INCH RIMS AND HAD EXTENSA HP 225/35R20 90W TIRES AND THE RECOMMENDED TIRE IS 235/45R18. WITHIN A MONTH AFTER THE NEW CAR PURCHASE IT RAIN AND THE CAR LOST TRACTION AND BEGAN TO SLIP AND SLIDE. I PROPOSE IMPLEMENTING LAWS TO GOVERN DEALERSHIP MODIFICATION OF VEHICLES AND HOLD SAID DEALERSHIP RESPONSIBLE FOR INFORMING THE CONSUMER OF THE NEGATIVE RAMIFICATIONS INVOLVED WITH KNOWINGLY PURCHASING A VEHICLE FOR AESTHETIC DESIRES. AFTER LEARNING OF MY MISTAKE THE HYUNDAI CORPORATION WOULD NOT NEGOTIATE A REASONABLE AGREEMENT WITH ME, AND CLOSED THE COMPLAINT LEAVING ME WITH AN UNSAFE VEHICLE THAT WAS ALTERED BY A THIRD PARTY COMPANY WITHIN THE DEALERSHIP, NAME: MOTOR SPORTS AUTHORITY. THE DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT RELEASE FROM THAT CONTRACT AND THE WORKMANSHIP OF THE BLACK OUT PACKAGE IS UNRAVELLING AND I DISCOVERED THE MODIFICATION HAS DECREASE THE VALUE OF THE CAR, WHEN I THOUGHT IT WOULD INCREASE IN VALUE. I ALSO LEARN THE ADDED EQUIPMENT STATED ABOVE WAS NOT INCLUDED ON THE VEHICLE PURCHASE INVOICE WHICH EFFECTS POSSIBLE REPAIRS AND/OR REPLACEMENT CONCERNING AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE COVERAGE. DEALERSHIP SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE AND RESPONSIBLE FOR INFORMING CUSTOMERS OF MODIFICATION AND BE HELD LEGALLY BINDING FOR THE VEHICLE SAFETY
WHEN MAKING TURNS THERE IS A VERY NOTICEABLE SOUND WHEN TURNING BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT, WITH FOR TO MUCH PLAY IN THE STEERING WHILE TO THE POINT THAT IT ALL MOST GOES COMPLETELY AROUND. ..WHILE IN NORMAL DRIVE MODE IT SOUNDS SOUNDS SOMEWHAT LIKE A WASH CYCLE/
MESSAGE ON INSTRUMENT PANEL STATED'COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEM WAS DISABLED AND RADAR WAS BLOCKED.THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING ALSO BEGAN TO FUNCTION ERRATICALLY AND A STEERING WHEEL SYMBOL APPEARED AND KEPT CHANGING COLOR FROM GREEN TO WHITE.THIS HAPPENED AFTER DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 400 MILES FROM THE DEALER IN NJ TO CHARLOTTE NC.MILEAGE IS 975.
PUSHED THE PARK BUTTON, SHOWED P ON THE DASH INDICATOR, DOORS THEN UNLOCKED. WHEN EXITED VEHICLE IT BEGAN ROLLING BACKWARD, PARK HAD NOT ENGAGED SLIGHT HILL ONLY. THIS HAS HAPPENED REPEATEDLY. PUSHED BUTTON TO PLACE THE CAR INTO REVERSE AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ENGAGE OR GO ANYWHERE.
FOLLOWING A FIRMWARE UPDATE TO THE OBC FOR A RECALL, THE VEHICLE TRANSMISSION NOW HAS A SEVERE DELAY RESPONDING TO DRIVER INPUT. THE TRANSMISSION IN THIS VEHICLE HAS ELECTRONIC SHIFT WITH PUSHBUTTONS. PREVIOUS TO THE FIRMWARE UPDATE, THE TRANSMISSION WOULD RESPOND INSTANTLY TO DRIVER INPUT FROM THESE BUTTONS. FOLLOWING THE FIRMWARE UPDATE, THE TRANSMISSION TAKES TWO SECONDS TO RESPOND. THIS DELAYED ACTION PROHIBITS DRIVER EMERGENCY SHIFTING, CREATING SEVERE RISK OF AN ACCIDENT. IN MY VEHICLE, I RECENTLY WAS ALMOST INVOLVED IN A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT WHEN THE DELAYED RESPONSE FROM THE TRANSMISSION CAUSED MY VEHICLE TO REVERSE INTO THE OPPOSING LANE OF TRAFFIC AS ACCELERATION WAS ATTEMPTED THINKING THE VEHICLE HAD SHIFTED INTO DRIVE. UPON ENTERING THE ACTIVE OPPOSITE LANE OF TRAFFIC, EMERGENCY ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE WAS PROHIBITED BY THE DELAYED RESPONSE OF THE VEHICLE SHIFTING INTO 'DRIVE' IN ORDER TO MOVE THE VEHICLE FROM THE OPPOSITE LANE OF TRAFFIC. PREVIOUS TO THIS INSTANCE, THERE HAVE BEEN DELAYS IN VEHICLE SHIFTING WHICH HAVE NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT WHEN THE DRIVER ATTEMPTS TO PLACE THE VEHICLE IN 'PARK', BUT THE DELAY CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO MOVE FORWARD AS THE DRIVER REMOVES THEIR FOOT FROM THE BRAKE, AND THE CAR MOVES FORWARD TOWARD STATIONARY OBJECTS AND PEOPLE. THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED TO HYUNDAI AND THEY HAVE NOT RESPONDED YET. FURTHERMORE, OTHER OBVIOUS FIRMWARE ISSUES IN THE VEHICLE HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED, ONE IN A DIFFERENT SAFETY SYSTEM.
ENGINE BLOCK BECAME INFESTED WITH RATS/MICE OVERNIGHT. I BELIEVE THIS WAS THE RESULT OF SOY-BASED COMPONENTS USED BY HYUNDAI. NO OTHER CARS ON MY BLOCK HAD THIS PROBLEM (I WAS ABLE TO SURVEY THE VEHICLE OWNERS BECAUSE WE ALL WERE THERE WAITING FOR STREET CLEANING TO OCCUR.) IT SEEMS OBVIOUS THAT THE RATS/MICE WERE ATTRACTED BY THE MATERIALS USED BY HYUNDAI AND ANECDOTAL REPORTS SUGGEST THIS IS A CHRONIC PROBLEM AMONG MANY CAR MANUFACTURERS, BUT ESPECIALLY ONES THAT USE SOY BASED COMPONENTS SUCH AS HYUNDAI, LAND ROVER, AND HONDA.
MY CAR STALLED AND STUTTERED BETWEEN 1000 AND 1500 MILES IN TRAFFIC AND COULDN'T GET IT INTO GEAR ONCE STARTED. IT WAS THE FUEL RAIL SENSOR. NOW AT 6000 MILES DID SAME THING. IF SITS FOR BIT WORKS AGAIN. IT ALSO RESET ITSELF AND I LOST ALL PREPROGRAMMED INFORMATION. THE GAS DOOR ALSO OPENS AT TIMES WHEN UNLOCK DRIVER DOOR. THE DEALERSHIP HAD IT THE FIRST TIME FOR OVER 30 DAYS AND HAD TO CONTACT ENGINEERS TO FIX IT.
I OWN A 2020 HYUNDAI SONATA. I PURCHASED THE CAR ON JANUARY THIS YEAR THE MILES IN THE CAR IS 700 MILES. A MONTH AFTER THE CAR STAR GIVING ME PROBLEM WITH BREAK. SOMEHOW THE CAR APPLIES THE EMERGENCY BREAK BY ITSELF AND DOESN'T WANT TO MOVE. WHEN I DRIVE THE CAR SUDDENLY STOP BY ITSELF AND GIVING ME MESSAGE LIKE: TO MOVE THE CAR PUT YOUR SEAT BELT, LOCK ALL THE DOOR EVEN WHEN I HAVE MY SEATBELT AND DOORS ARE LOCK THE CAR DO THAT WHEN EVER THE LESS I EXPECTED. I TOOK THE CAR THREE TIME FOR REPAIR AND UPDATE AND THE CAR GIVE ME THE SAME PROBLEM. THE DEALER GAVE ME A LOANER ANOTHER 2020 SONATA AND HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS ISSUES BECAUSE IF IS RAINY OR SNOWING. THE DEALER DOESN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR WHEN THEY DRIVE THE CAR. I TOLD THEM THAT HAPPEN WHEN THE LEES EXPECTED
I NEVER GOT WHAT I WANTED FROM HYUNDAI. I WAS TOLD THAT YOU CANNOT USE A CUSHION AND HAVE A PASSENGER AIRBAG.. I WENT UP TO CEO, STILL SAME ANSWER. I TRIED.
THIS IS STILL A PROBLEM WHICH IS UNSOLVED. I WAS TOLD TO GO TO A BODY TO RAISE THE SEAT. THE BODY SHOP REFUSED SAYING IT WOULD SHIFT RESPONSIBILITY TO THEM INSTEAD OF HYUNDAI.NOT HAVING MUCH LUCK AS OF YET.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2020 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE PASSENGER'S SIDE BLIND SPOT DETECTION SYSTEM FAILED TO ACTIVATE. THE CAR WHILE I'M DRIVING SOMETIMES THE CAR IS UNSTABLE ALSO WHEN I TURN ON THE CAR AND I PREPARE TO PUT IT ON DRIVE THE CAR APPLY THE EMERGENCY BRAKES BY ITSELF. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT IS ON AND THERE IS NO WAY TO REMOVE IT, I HAVE TO TURN THE CAR ON AND OFF CONTINUALLY UNTIL FINALLY THE CAR REMOVES THE BRAKES. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND ON THE STREET AND WHILE I WAS DOING SO THE CAR PUT ON THE BRAKES BY ITSELF. ONE TO TWO MONTHS AGO I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND I TOLD THEM ABOUT IT BUT THEY SAID THAT THE CARE NEEDS 2 UPDATES, APPARENTLY THE CAR HAS TWO RECALLS. 6 HOURS LATER AFTER THE UPDATE THE CARE WASN'T WORKING PROPERLY AND THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR 3 TO 4 DAYS, I GOT A LONER BY THEN. LAST WEEK WEDNESDAY 08/05/2020 I TOOK THE CAR AGAIN TO REPORT THE PROBLEM AND I WAS TOLD THE CARE WOULD BE READY IN 5 HOURS BUT AFTER 5 HOURS IT WASN'T. SINCE I DIDN'T FEEL SAFE IN THE CAR I TOLD THEM TO KEEP THE CAR AND GIVE ME A LOANER BECAUSE THE CAR IS GOING TO TAKE ONE WEEK TO FIX BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO ORDER PARTS, THEY WANT TO KEEP THE CAR BUT THEY DIDN'T WANT TO GIVE ME A LOANER. I CONTACT HYUNDAI CORPORATE TO REPORT THIS INCIDENT BECAUSE IT IS TWICE ALREADY, AND I WAS TOLD THAT SOMEONE WOULD BE IN CONTACT WITH ME IN THE NEXT 48 HOURS. I MISSED THE CALL AND I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO CALL TO GET IN CONTACT WITH THEM AGAIN TO FIX THE PROBLEM BUT EVERY TIME I CALL THEY COME WITH ANOTHER EXCUSE. THE CASE MANAGER IN CHARGE OF THE CASE IS GARRISON AND THE CASE NUMBER 17216875.
VEHICLE ABRUPTLY STOPPED IN A TRAFFIC SIGNAL WITHOUT GIVING ANY INDICATIONS WHAT SO EVER. WHEN TRIED TO RESTART IT STALLED PRETTY BADLY CAUSING EXCESSIVE VIBRATIONS. THIS HAD JUST 1900 MILES ON IT. VEHICLE DIDN'T HAVE ANY MIL OR ANY VISIBLE INFORMATION ABOUT THE ISSUE. IT CREATED A HUGE TRAFFIC PILE UP DUE TO THE PEAK HOUR IN WHICH THIS PROBLEM STARTED. FEW DAYS AGO THERE WAS ISSUE WITH STARTING BUT IT RESOLVED AFTER COUPLE OF MINUTES, THIS TIME THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND I LOST MY DAYS WORK AND PAY. BIGGEST CONCERN IS HOW ABRUPTLY IT STOPPED IN A BUSY STREET.
VEHICLE ROUGH IDLED & EVENTUALLY SHUDDERED TO A STOP. THIS HAPPENED FOUR TIMES WHILE IN GEAR AND IDLING AT APPX 1000-1500 MILES. BETWEEN 1500-2000 MILES, VEHICLE SHUT DOWN WHILE DRIVING APPX 60MPH ON A COUNTY ROAD. AT APPX 2700 MILES, MPGS DRASTICALLY IMPACTED WHEN VEHICLE SUDDENLY STOPPED SHIFTING GEARS PROPERLY WHILE IN MOTION AT APPX 70MPH ON THE HIGHWAY. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED WITH MESSAGE REGARDING ECS ISSUES. VEHICLE STILL DRIVES, IT JUST SEEMS TO STRUGGLE WITH EFFICIENCY AND SHIFTING CORRECTLY.
REAR DOORS RETAIN WATER EVERY TIME IT RAINS. WHEN YOU OPEN THE REAR DOORS WATER DRAINS OUT OF THE CAR. BROUGHT CAR TO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP WHO VERIFIED THE PROBLEM AND CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM WITH OTHER NEW CARS ON THEIR LOT, ON APRIL 21, 2020. DEALERSHIP CONTACTED HYUNDAI CORPORATE FOR GUIDANCE AND THERE HAS BEEN NO RESPONSE TO DATE. *TR
I LOOKED UP UNDER THE HOOD, IT START RUSTING IN FRAME IN DRIVER SIDE. I CHECKED OTHER 2020 SONATA FROM DEALERSHIP AND THOSE CAR ARE EVEN WORST. THOSE CAR RUSTING DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE TOO. *TR
WHEN IT RAINS WATER GETS INSIDE THE DOORS WHILE PARKED. ESPECIALLY THE BACK DOORS. IF IT RAINS HARD A CUP FULL OF WATER WILL COME OUT THE DOOR UPON OPENING. I'VE BEEN TOLD IT'S A DESIGN FLAW. I'VE HAD IT LOOKED AT TWICE AND IT'S STILL NOT FIXED. CUSTOMER SERVICE CAN'T HAVE SOMEONE COME OUT AND LOOK AND IT BECAUSE OF THE VIRUS, SO THERE'S NOTHING THAT THEY CAN DO.

I WAS DRIVING LONG-DISTANCE ON A HIGHWAY AT APPROX 55-60 MPH. THE WHOLE TRIP THROUGH THE ARIZONA DESERT WAS MARKED BY PERIODIC RAIN, AT TIMES VERY HEAVY. IN THE VERY HEAVY BURSTS OF RAIN, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS DID A TERRIBLE JOB. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SHOCKED BY POORLY PERFORMING WINDSHIELD WIPERS. MY COMPANION EVEN COMMENTED ON HOW UNSAFE IT IS. THE PROBLEM MAY BE TWO-FOLD: (1) IT SEEMS LIKE THE WIPERS NEEDED ONE MORE SPEED SETTINGS, A FASTER ONE. (2) THE FACTORY BLADES MAY NOT BE EFFECTIVE. THIS IS A 2 MONTH OLD CAR. IT ALSO SEEMED TO BE A PROBLEM ANYTIME I HAD TO TURN THE WIPERS ON THEIR HIGHEST SETTING EVEN LATER ON URBAN FREEWAYS - I NEEDED A HIGHER ONE. I PLAN TO REPLACE THE BLADES AND HOPE THAT HELPS. I'VE NEVER BEEN DRIVING AND FEARED I WAS IN DANGER BECAUSE OF THE WIPERS. I DON'T HAVE ANY DOCUMENTATION. NOTHING IS VISIBLY BROKEN.
