Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MINIVANS. THE FUEL TANK VENT HOSE ALLOWS AIR TO VENT FROM THE FUEL TANK DURING REFUELING. CRACKS HAVE DEVELOPED IN THE VENT HOSE. IF (1) THE FUEL TANK IS OVERFILLED, NOT ALLOWING EXCESS FUEL IN THE VENT HOSE TO FLOW BACK INTO THE TANK, (2) THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN ONLY A SHORT DISTANCE AFTER REFUELING AND, (3) THERE IS SUBSEQUENTLY SIGNIFICANT HEATING OF THE FUEL TANK, THE FUEL IN THE TANK CAN EXPAND INTO THE VENT HOSE AND LEAK FUEL.
Consequence: FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE CAN RESULT IN A FIRE.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE VENT HOSE.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER MINI VANS EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMOTIVE BATTERIES SUPPLIED BY GNB TECHNOLOGIES. THESE BATTERIES HAVE A DEFECTIVE NEGATIVE POST THAT CAN CAUSE ACID LEAKAGE AND RELATED CORROSION DAMAGE.
Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE BATTERY WHICH COULD LEAD TO AN ENGINE FIRE OR BATTERY EXPLOSION.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THESE BATTERIES. UNTIL A NEW BATTERY IS OBTAINED, OWNERS SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO "JUMP START" THESE BATTERIES.
TRANSMISSION JUMPS OUT OF GEAR IN TRAFFIC, RPM GO HIGH THEN TRANSMISSION ENGAGES.THIS COULD CAUSE AACCIDENT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 NISSAN QUEST. THE CONTACT WAS ATTEMPTING TO PARK WHEN BOTH FRONTAL AIR BAGS DEPLOYED INDEPENDENTLY. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED UNKNOWN INJURIES BY THE AIR BAGS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT WAS NOT ILLUMINATED WHEN AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE MANUFACTURER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE BUT HAD NOT PROVIDED THE CONTACT WITH A REASON WHY THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 108,000.
DOOR LOCKS AND UNLOCKS BY ITSELF AT RANDOM. NOT ALL DOOR LOCKS WILL LOCK WHEN THE DOOR LOCK BUTTON IS PRESSED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 NISSAN QUEST CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED. A FIRE REPORT WAS FILED AND THE CONTACT HAS PICTURES OF THE FAILURE. TWO DAYS LATER, SHE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 00V419001 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY). THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY DID NOT STORE RECALL INFORMATION EXCEEDING THE YEAR 2000. THE CONTACT IS IN THE PROCESS OF NOTIFYING THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 119,747. 1997 NISSAN PATHFINDER SE REAR SUSPENSION CONTROL ARMS NEEDED TO BE A RECALL ISSUED AS THIS WAS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. NEAR FATAL SCARE WHILE ON THE FREEWAY RECENTLY @ HIGH RATE OF SPEED 65 MPH WHEN THE CAR BEGAN TO SWAY VIOLENTLY LEFT TO RIGHT. I ALMOST LOST CONTROL, BUT MANAGED TO GRIP STEERING WHEEL AND SOFTLY PULL VEHICLE OVER AWAY FROM SPEEDING TRAFFIC. THE VEHICLE IS NOW GARAGED UNTIL MECHANIC CAN REPLACE UPPER AND LOWER CONTROL SUSPENSION ARMS. I HAVE GOTTEN 2 MECHANICAL ESTIMATES BOTH TOTALING OVER $800.00. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED AND COULD HAVE CAUSED A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT INCLUDING PERSONAL BODILY INJURY OR EVEN DEATH!!*AK
TL*- IN MAY 2004 THE CONTACT RECEIVED A 1997 NISSAN PATHFINDER AS A GIFT, IT HAD AN ODOMETER READING OF 90000 AT THE TIME. THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO WOBBLE WHILE TRAVELING AT 65 TO 70 MPH SOON AFTER IT WAS PURCHASED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A NISSAN DEALERSHIP, WHERE ALL OF THE STRUTS WERE REPLACED, BUT THIS DID NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO WOBBLE ANY TIME THERE WAS A SMALL OBSTRUCTION ON THE ROAD. THE CONTACT CONTINUED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITH THIS PROBLEM WITHOUT TAKING IT TO ANY OTHER DEALERS SINCE THE PROBLEM WAS NOT RESOLVED WITH THE FIRST VISIT. THE CONTACT DROVE LONG DISTANCES FROM TIME TO TIME AND THE WOBBLE ON THE VEHICLE CONTINUED. IN MARCH 2007 THE CONTACT CALLED NISSAN, AND WAS TOLD TO TAKE IT TO A DEALER TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. NISSAN EXPLAINED THAT THE CONTACT WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR CHARGES. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 106971.*AK
THE CAR LOCKS SPONTANEOUSLY AND CONSTANTLY. IT IS A KNOWN DEFECT (SERVICE BULLETIN 98068). WE DID NOT PURCHASE THE CAR WHILE IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY FROM THE MANUFACTURER, HOWEVER SINCE THIS IS SUCH A SAFETY CONCERN (MY 2 YEAR OLD NEPHEW WAS LOCKED IN THE CAR IN HIS CAR SEAT OVER LABOR DAY WEEKEND), I FEEL THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD PAY TO HAVE IT FIXED. THEY ARE REFUSING. *NM

DRIVING SLOWLY IN PATHFINDER 4X4 '97 HIT POT HOLE. SPOT WELDS ON FRAME TO INNER FENDER BROKE LOOSE. ONE FOOT LONG SEAM SPLIT 3 INCHES WIDE VIEWED FROM THE LEFT FRONT STRUT. COST $1,500 TO WELD AND BRACE. PROFESSIONAL SAID PATHFINDERS NOTORIOUS FOR THIS WEAKNESS. STEERING COLUMN JAMMED FROM FAILURE WHICH COULD HAVE CAUSED HEAD-ON FATALITY INTO ONCOMING VEHICLE. SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN FOR A M/V PURPORTED TO BE AN ATV! MY EXPERIENCE IN ACCIDENTS STEMS FROM BOSTON POLICE OFFICER'S ACCIDENT REPORTS FOR OVER A DECADE. INSURANCE AMICA CALLED IT A COLLISION AND INTENDS TO INCREASE MY RATE $600 PER YEAR AND RANK FROM PERFECT DRIVER 9 LEVEL INTO A 13 LEVEL FOR SIX YEARS. BELIEVE THERE IS A TORT JUSTIFICATION. OTHER OWNER MUST BE NOTIFIED. THIN WALLED STRUCTURAL METALS TO BLAME. *NM

CONSUMER SPOKE WITH SOMEONE IN TAMPA AT COURTESY NISSAN, WHO TOLD HER THAT THE WORK WAS FIXED, BUT COULD NOT PROVIDE ANYTHING IN WRITING TO PROVE IT DUE TO THE PREVIOUS OWNER'S PRIVACY. ANOTHER DEALER IN ORLANDO, UNIVERSAL NISSAN , SAID THAT IT DID NOT APPEAR TO BE FIXED. THE CONSUMER CALLED NISSAN ABOUT A MONTH AGO AND ASKED THEM IF THEY COULD CHECK IT, AND THEY SAID THEY COULD SEND HER SOMETHING, BUT THE CONSUMER HAS NOT HEARD ANYTHING YET.*AK
I BOUGHT THIS NISSAN QUEST 1997 TWO YEARS AGO AND I WAS TOLD THERE IS A FAULTY GAS TANK THAT CAN CAUSE A FIRE. I CONTACTED DEALERS IN MY AREA AND WAS TOLD THE REPAIR WAS DONE IN ONE OF THE DEALERS BUT THEY NEVER WANTED TO PROVIDED ANYTHING IN WRITING THAT SHOWS THE REPAIR. COURTESY NISSAN IN TAMPA FLORIDA WAS TERRIBLE AND DIDN'T WANT TO HELP, I CONTACTED NISSAN AT THE 1800 NUMBER AND THIS GUY CHRIS AT EXTENSION 8443 TOLD ME I WAS GOING TO RECEIVE A LETTER SHOWING THE REPAIR BUT I WAITED TWO WEEKS AND NEVER RECEIVED NOTHING, WHEN I CALLED HIM BACK HE NEVER RESPONDED TO MY CALLS AND I SPOKE WITH TAMMY AT EXTENSION 3879 AND SAID WHAT CHRIS TOLD ME WAS A LIE I AM VERY TIRED OF THIS COMPANY LYING TO ME EVERYTIME I CALL ,I JUST WANTED THIS PEOPLE TO BE INVESTIGATED, THEY HAVE A TERRIBLE SERVICE AT THE 1800 NUMBER AND I FEEL LIKE ME AND MY KIDS ARE TRAVELING IN A DANGEROUS VAN, I WON'T RECOMMEND ANYBODY TO BUY NISSAN QUEST OR DEALING WITH NISSAN COURTESY AT TAMPA OR THE 1800 NISSAN NUMBER, I WISH SOMEBODY CAN INVESTIGATE THESE PEOPLE AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT, BECAUSE I DON'T THINK IS FAIR TO BUY A CAR WITH A DANGEROUS RECALL AND THEY DON'T EVEN WANT TO PROVIDE INFORMATION IF IT WAS FIXED OR NOT OR AT LEAST HAVE IT CHECK. MY SON RECENTLY GRADUATED TO A BOOSTER SEAT. I PURCHASED COSCO TRAVELER HIGH BACK BOOSTER. MY SON FITS ALL OF THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THIS BOOSTER SEAT. I INSTALLED IT PROPERLY. MY SON WAS IN THE BOOSTER SEAT. AS I WAS DRIVING ALONG THE FREEWAY MY SON DROPPED HIS BOOK ON THE FLOOR. HE LEANED FORWARD TO PICK IT UP FROM THE FLOOR AND THE ARM OF THE BOOSTER SEAT CAUSED THE SEAT BELT BUTTON ON THE LATCH TO DEPRESS, WHICH THUS UNBUCKLED THE SEAT BELT AND CAUSED MY SON TO FALL OUT OF HIS SEAT WHILE REACHING FOR HIS BOOT. THE SEAT BELT UNBUCKLES EVERY SINGLE TIME MY SON LEANS FORWARD AT ALL DUE TO THE "ARM" OF THE BOOSTER SEAT. IT IS MY OPINION THAT IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT, THE FORCE OF HIS BODY WEIGHT AGAINST THE SEAT BELT WOULD CAUSE THE SEAT BELT TO UNBUCKLE. THUS THE RESTRAINT WOULD NOT BE RESTRAINING HIM. *NM
BOUGHT A 97 NISSAN PATHFINDER IN SEPT. 03...SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE ENGINE LIGHT HAS SINCE HAD A MIND OF ITS OWN, TURNING ON AND OFF DEPENDING ON THE CLIMATE OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. I RECENTLY LEARNED THAT IT IS THE EVAP VENT CONTROL VALVE AND O RING WHICH NEED TO BE REPLACED. I HAD TAKEN THE CAR INTO 3 DEALERSHIPS ON THE EAST COAST WHERE I WAS TOLD NUMEROUS OTHER ISSUES WERE CAUSING THE LIGHT. I HAVE PUT $4500 WORTH OF WORK INTO THE VEHICLE ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT IT WAS A $122 PART THAT SUPPOSEDLY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE SPOKEN TO OTHER NISSAN OWNERS (MANY WITH OTHER NISSAN VEHICLES-NOT PATHFINDERS) AND THEY TOO HAVE HAD THIS SAME EXPERIENCE WITH THEIR VEHICLE. THE PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE THROUGH ANYBODY EXCEPT THE NISSAN DEALERSHIPS WHICH MEANS THERE IS NO WAY TO GET A COMPETATIVE PRICE. IN ORDER TO GET THE LIGHT TO SHUT OFF ONCE MY MECHANIC HAS REPLACED THE PARTS I WILL THEN BE FORCED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TO PAY THEM TO SHUT IT OFF. I WAS INFORMED BY THE MECHANIC AT THE DEALERSHIP THAT THIS PROBLEM WOULD NOT EFFECT THE DRIVABILITY OF THE VEHICLE THAT IT WAS AN EMISSIONS SITUATION. ULTIMATELY, THE VEHICLE WILL NOT PASS EMISSIONS INSPECTIONS NOR WILL IT GET DECENT GAS MILEAGE UNTIL THIS PART IS REPLACED.
