My 2024 BMW X5 experienced a complete megatronics failure at 54,500 miles. The megatronics unit controls critical vehicle functions including transmission and engine management. This failure caused the vehicle to become completely inoperable — posing a significant safety risk. This failure occurred just 4,500 miles beyond the factory warranty on a barely 2 year old vehicle. A 2024 model year vehicle should not experience such a critical safety-related failure at this mileage. BMW Corporate has been unresponsive for 7 days despite opening case number XXX and promising a 3-5 business day response. I am requesting NHTSA investigate whether this is a widespread defect that may affect other 2024 BMW X5 owners. Incident Description: "Vehicle suddenly entered limp mode while driving at highway speed on XXX in [XXX] . This caused an unexpected and dangerous loss of power while surrounded by highway traffic creating a significant safety hazard. Vehicle was unable to maintain highway speeds and had to be carefully maneuvered to the shoulder of the road. Vehicle was subsequently driven to BMW Dealership in [XXX] where it was diagnosed with a complete megatronics failure." Since buying the car new we have had a constant problem of the "emergency call system malfunction" on the dashboard. We've been to the dealer several times for this and each time they say they've fixed it. Last time they told us they had replaced the TCU module, but in the last month the warning has re-appeared. It seems to have affected the GPS now. While driving on the freeway the map was showing us a mile away on surface streets, giving us guidance such as "stop at the stop sign ahead and turn left".

POWER TRAIN,ENGINEFebruary 6, 2026
I bought this car and started to have issues after a couple weeks. Because it is a hybrid model, it works perfectly fine when the car is running on the battery. Immediately the engine began to work, I get hesitation and the car drives rough. I took it to the first dealership that said there was water in the engine but they were proved wrong because what they show as water was apparently fuel that did not burn the right way in the cylinder. The dealership came with another excuse that the filter had traces of water which makes them to believe something was wrong. I took the car to another bmw dealership as I did not trust their diagnosis. The other bmw dealership performed some work on the car but then came to the conclusion that their hands were tied because of what the previous dealership reported to bmw north america. I called bmw north america and they told me to go back to the dealership after I had no success at the dealership. I believe this is a lemon case and also constitute a safety hazard because I nearly had an accident because the car switch from running on battery to combustion and immediately on the highway. The speed slows abruptly and car began to drive rough. I would appreciate any traction this can get from the board to resolve this with the manufacturer
AIR BAGSJanuary 21, 2026
Car's information system was giving error stating: "Urgent interior functionality check up. The driver restraint system of your vehicle is malfunctioning. There is an increased risk of injury in case of a collision." Took it to the BMW dealer, they shared this info: Cause: Read out faults found fault 930949 knee air bag drivers short to negative need to replace harnesses as per SIB 65-27-24. Correction: Replace harness for knee air bags. The estimate for this is $2,013.72 which breaks down to parts at $288.96 and 7 hours worth of labor costing $1,724.76. This car is two years old. I would assume this is a manufacturing defect happening at only two years of age.
SERVICE BRAKESJanuary 18, 2026
The failure involves the Integrated Brake System, which is subject to a manufacturer issued safety recall, and related braking components including a wheel speed sensor that is part of the brake and stability control system. The vehicle is currently back in my possession and is available for inspection upon request. My safety and the safety of others were put at risk due to sudden and unpredictable loss of braking capability while driving, including abrupt deceleration and stopping in traffic, creating near collision situations. The issue has been reproduced multiple times and confirmed through repeated service visits, with the first and second recall related repairs performed at BMW of West Houston and a third repair attempt performed at BMW of Houston Midtown, following which the vehicle was returned to me. The vehicle has been inspected by authorized BMW dealerships and BMW North America has been notified, though I have not received guidance from corporate BMW regarding a plan moving forward or instructions on how to proceed should a fourth brake failure occur. Brake related warning lamps and system messages appeared following both the first and second recall repairs, and after the October 30, 2025 recall repair the vehicle experienced a brake system failure within approximately 22 miles of driving despite the presence of warning indicators. Given the repeated failures after recall repairs, the prior warning messages, and the lack of direction from BMW North America, I am concerned about operating the vehicle, particularly for longer distances, due to the unpredictable nature of the brake failures and the unresolved safety risk.

Three weeks ago the instrument cluster indicated a failure of the front collision avoidance system and said to have the vehicle examined by the dealer. I dropped it off two weeks ago and have been informed that they're having trouble updating the instrument panel and other component software. Other times the instrument panel would go dark for several seconds while driving. There is an open recall on X5 models produced from 01/24. Mine is not included as it was produced 11/23. Recall is 24V-138

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKESOctober 2, 2025
2024 BMW X5 with 22k miles, leasing the vehicle. Had the vehicle in the dealer, Herb Chambers BMW of Boston a few months ago to fix a brake recall and change the oil. Dealer said they fixed both, and also said they needed the vehicle all day to fix the brakes, so they got me an Uber and then dropped off the vehicle when it was completed. Fast forward to today, October 2, 2025. Drive train warning came up when driving the vehicle, told to find a safe place to stop, within 10 seconds the vehicle lost most of engine power. Was able to stop in a safe location, contacted roadside assistance, numerous warnings came up on screen. Roadside assistance said to start and stop the vehicle and this cleared the message, said that vehicle was safe to drive, it was probably just a sensor issue that put the vehicle into some type of safe mode (what a horrible thing to do, an enormously unsafe as the operator should determine this). Two days later, another drive train warning and the vehicle on it's own moved the transmission into neutral while driving at 30mph. This issue with going into neutral on it's own, I found out through speaking with my wife, that this happened a couple of week prior as well. I called road side assistance and had the vehicle towed, called the dealer to get a loaner as this vehicle is not safe to drive in it's current condition. After this issue, I looked my vehicle up by VIN and saw that the brake recall wasn't fixed yet to my surprise. When I spoke to the dealer today as the vehicle was being towed there with this drive train issue, I said were my brakes for this recall fixed, they said the software issue was fixed, but not the mechanical issue. I said please fix this brake recall while in there looking at this drive train issue. Vehicle is clearly not safe to drive in this condition, and you can use your imagination if this happened while driving at highway speeds or various other scenarios, not good at all.

The car suddenly dead in the intersection when driving the car, then can’t start the car, can’t shift the gear, stay in neutral position all the time. A message came out staying “Brake problem “! After around 20 minutes, system messaged us “problem solved, OK to drive “, so we were able to start the engine and start driving as normal. I called Service center let them know the scenario but got no answer. After 4 days same problem reoccurring again, this time car dead during left turn, fortunately no car hit our car (we were having 2 babies in the car). A lot of messages showed up, still mentioned “Brake problems “, and after 15-20 minutes, message us again - “Problem solved, ok to drive “. We have AAA tow the car to BMW service center later since we didn’t feel the message was reliable. The service center identified the problem and replaced the Mechatronics Control Unit and returned the car to us after 7 days. I am concerned about the car’s system message, it’s mentioned “Problem solved, OK to drive “, the message could misleading and have been fatal if we continued driving the vehicle to freeway. After we got vehicle back we were still very cautious about the car. I sent my concern to New Central BMW Alhambra CA about one month ago -to the service manager and requested a written explanation of why this faulty message occurred and how BMW engineer plans to prevent this from happening again. But there was no answer so far. There were a “Brake problem recall” and a “Emission Recall “for this vehicle and we went through the procedure already before these 2 brake problems.

Since purchasing the car new, the check engine light has come on repeatedly (probably about ten times in 2+ years). I believe it’s related to the electric charging components. This seems to be a known and unresolved problem with this model. BMW has refused to replace the vehicle or even acknowledge that this is a known problem, even though I paid almost 90K for the car. They just expect me to take it to the dealership every couple of month. I told them I want to trade in the car and asked how they intend to stand behind their defective product, and I have heard nothing in return. The check engine light is currently on since the most recent software update.
STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCESeptember 18, 2025
The Integrated Brake System and Dynamic Safety Control both malfunctioned, not turning on. The car is totaled, so I don't think anything is available for inspection. There was water on the highway, and the car ended up going off the road into the grass and rolled over a few times before landing at the bottom of the ditch 100ft away. The car was not inspected because I was not aware of the major recall until I started looking into it. There was a snapshot of the DTC codes two weeks before the incident and there were codes specifically for the IB system as noted in the recall. There may have been one or two times throughout driving the car beforehand that a error light popped up, but then it disappeared almost immediately after.
STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCESeptember 18, 2025
A car from the other side made an illegal left turn in front of me, and I braked very early, yet still slid into them. The car had been inspected at the time at the collision center, and had DTC codes from before repair and after repair, showing the Integrated Brake systems had failures before and after. There was no mention of the results of the inspection until I asked after another braking incident occurred two weeks later. There were moments where a light would pop up for a second, then disappear. It may have happened only once.

I have recently experienced sudden phantom braking on my vehicle on three separate occasions, following a recall on a brake module that was taken care of at the dealer. They have been in constant touch with corporate, trying to diagnose this. No luck! I will not drive this Vehicle, nor can I in good conscie nce trade it in to another dealer. I could be held liable. The drive train failed on the car and left the car without power as the transmission disengaged and was revving in drive mode. This happened when I was making a right turn. Oncoming traffic had to dodge us making it a very dangerous situation. The shoulder was narrow so half of the car in the number one lane. The car had been back into the dealership many time for similar issue but this time the car actual hard warning signs flash on the screen and loss complete power and maneuverability. A few different lights came on the dash. Prior to the car completely shutting down, the car would down shift really hard and the computer says the car was trying to go in reverse. On [XXX], while my 2024 BMW X5 was parked and stationary in an uncovered lot in Fort Lee, NJ, a large crack suddenly formed on the windshield. The crack originated at the top edge and extended approximately 8 inches. There was no impact observed, and the windshield had no prior chips or damage. The vehicle was exposed to sustained outdoor temperatures near 100°F for multiple consecutive days due to an extreme heat dome over the region. I suspect a thermal stress fracture possibly related to glass quality or installation. This type of failure raises safety concerns about the structural integrity of the glass. I have contacted BMW and am awaiting their response. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCEJuly 24, 2025
On July 23, 2025, at around 10:50 AM, shortly after leaving my community and driving onto a main road, my BMW X5 suddenly experienced what felt like an emergency braking event and completely lost power. I was driving at approximately 40 mph when this happened. It caused surrounding vehicles to honk and make sudden maneuvers to avoid a collision, creating a dangerous situation. I was extremely frightened and shocked, and for a moment I panicked because there were cars all around me. With the help of a friend and my family, I contacted BMW Roadside Assistance. It took nearly five hours before my vehicle was finally towed about nine miles away to the Irvine BMW dealership for service. This incident has caused me extreme emotional distress, sleeplessness, and serious concerns about the safety and quality of the vehicle. I am seeking help and an official investigation into this issue.

I purchased this BMW X5 xDrive50e vehicle from BMW showroom in kalamazoo, MI as a pre-owned vehicle. It looks like this particular vehicle had already reported an drivetrain issue based on the NHTSA complaint: [XXX] Looks like Drivetrain malfunction issue is a recurring one in BMW X5 50e and hit with the same issue on [XXX]. Here, i want to file a complaint regarding a safety issues with this 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e, which currently has 14,065 miles. Vehicle started showing 2 Error messages. (1) Drivetrain Malfunctions Error stating that driving is not possible and asking to call the roadside assistance. (2) Regenerative braking of the vehicle is disturbed. It is possible to continue driving and asking to schedule a service appointment. On seeing these messages, called the BMW SoS line and informed them about the issue and towed the vehicle to the nearest service center. After running the diagnostics on the vehicle, Service center confirmed that EGS diagnostics test is inconclusive and mechatronics parts require a replacement. Service center stated that some of the parts are available within the country and few has to be shipped from Germany. Currently, vehicle is in service center waiting for the parts to get replaced. 2024 July summer time, the compressor started same issue as the temperature increased. All of a sudden, the car was started showing major “drivetrain error” and “high voltage battery error”. I have taken the car again back to the same dealership and this time the car was starting to show major system failures. I have kept BMW in the email loop and at the first instance itself I have called out that cooling issues can cause battery issues, and it happened exactly like that after 7 months. Car was with the dealership from 07/22/2024 mileage: 7896 to 07/24/2024. Dealership said this was just a software issue even though there were errors related to high voltage, after 3 days, dealership simply updated the software and cleared all the issue and related the car stating that everything fixed. I have attached the service appointment letter for this issue. It looks like they wanted me to cover the 12 months after delivery so that they can be safe with lemon law, and it proved true with next incident. The vehicle first reported a drivetrain malfunction and the message said to continue driving with reduced engine performance. The vehicle did get us home. I tested it the following day and received the same fault after a couple of miles of driving. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, a 50 mile trip. After a couple of weeks the dealer stated that the vehicle was ready for pickup. I got in the vehicle and 1.5 miles later received a drive fault warning me to stop carefully and turn off drive ready mode. I was driving on a very busy narrow road looking for a place to pull over when the vehicle lost all motive power. Having no choice but to try and pull over very quickly as we were going up a hill. The police had the vehicle towed and returned us to the dealer. Losing all motive power without warning is I believe a serious safety issue. The vehicle has been with the dealer now 5 weeks with no resolution of the problem. I’ve told them that I want a full root cause investigation in writing before the vehicle is released back to me. I have zero confidence in the vehicle now.

The recall was issued in Feb 2024 and the BMW still has not remedy for the problem. This is a serious recall and poses a serious safety risk to my health and life. Per BMW: "In Some Cases, There Will Be A Reduction In Power Assist Braking, Which Could Lead To An Extended Stopping Distance And Increase The Risk Of A Crash. The Antilock Brake System (ABS) And Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) System May Not Function, Which Could Also Affect Braking Performance As Well As Vehicle Handling And Control. However, Fully Mechanical Braking Is Not Affected And, If The IB System Is Not Functioning Properly, The Parking (Emergency) Brake Will Be Automatically Activated To Aid In Braking Performance And Help Maintain Vehicle Stability And Control"

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINEOctober 28, 2024
I am filing this complaint regarding serious safety issues with my 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e, which currently has approximately 12,000 miles. 1. Drivetrain Malfunctions and Assembly Error: The vehicle experienced three instances of drivetrain malfunctions within an eight-day period, causing it to go into limp mode unexpectedly while driving. The issue was identified as a misrouted wiring harness, which has since been repaired. I was informed by the BMW technician that a service bulletin addressing this issue was released 6 months prior to the production of my vehicle. Despite BMW’s knowledge of this recurring problem, the vehicle was assembled incorrectly, creating a significant safety hazard. This failure to address known issues during production resulted in potential disaster, compromising my safety and that of others on the road. 2. Unresolved Safety Recall – Regenerative ABS Braking System: The vehicle is subject to an ongoing recall for the regenerative ABS braking system, with no available remedy at this time. The lack of resolution for this critical safety component raises further safety concerns. 3. Connectivity Issues: The eSIM car connect hotspot has been inoperable, and BMW has acknowledged the problem, suggesting that I wait for potential updates. This impacts navigation and other safety-related features. Safety Concerns: These combined issues indicate that I was sold a vehicle with known safety defects that were not properly addressed at the manufacturing stage. As a consumer, I require a reliable and safe vehicle, which the 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e has failed to provide. The fact that BMW was aware of this recurring issue through a bulletin prior to my vehicle’s production adds to the urgency of resolving these problems. Resolution Attempts: I have worked with the local BMW dealership to repair the wiring harness, but the unresolved ABS recall and connectivity issues persist. BMW has not provided a clear timeline for resolving the safety recall.

EXTERIOR LIGHTINGSeptember 20, 2024
It’s not a one time experience, it’s all the time. But I feel, and many, many other people (owners of the same car and other car enthusiasts agree) that the rear turn signals on the 2024 BMW X5 are not sufficient enough. I do not feel the illuminate properly and it seems as though they are malfunctioning when in use. BMW started using the sequential fading turn signals, which I don’t like, but they are bright and easily distinguishable in the front, but the back, it does not make me feel safe enough. I do not feel they illuminate correctly and feel they are not bright enough (even though there is nothing wrong with them). I feel as though the rear turn signals are confusing for other drivers and does not do a good job at letting other drivers know I’m turning. They pulsate and look like they malfunction. I’d rather they just be like a standard LED, that flashes straight on & straight off. Or better yet, have a separate LED amber strip in the middle of the rear taillight (like the European models have) which makes it easier to distinguish and allows other drivers to know when I’m turning. I do not feel safe with the current rear turn signals.

As you can see, there is an open recall on my vehicle. This seems to be impacting roughly 80 thousand cars in the US. BMW does not have parts to fix this recall and is continuing to ask drivers to keep driving their cars with defective breaking system. I wanted to know what action you may take against a manufacturer that is essentially asking owners to keep driving unsafe cars on US highways presumably causing a dangerous situation for everyone.

In February,2024[12th]. BMW FILED A RECALL NOTICE ABOUT A DEFECTIVE PART IN THE BRAKING SYSTEMS OF 2023,2024 models 5series, 7 series, x1,x5,x6,x7 and Xm. My vehicle was made in mid March and delivered early April. Supposedly according to my source , BMW received replacement parts from the vendor and production continued. I’m not sure if it ever stopped. The problem is BMW NEVER TESTED THESE NEW PARTS TO SEE IF THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM. THIS IS CLEARLY NEGLIGENCE ON THEIR PART. THE DEGREE THE LAWYERS CAN DETERMINE. NOW AROUND August12, BMW ISSUED A STOP SALE ON ALL THESE CARS INCLUDING SOME 2025 MODELS. ONLY BECAUSE I READ A USER BLOG ON LINE ABOUT THIS AND CHECKED MY VIN WAS I AWARE IT AFFECTED MY CAR. NO NOTICE FROM BMW. This was not a don’t drive notice. The effect on owners is they can’t trade or sell their cars. There does not seem to be a requirement that BMW file a STOP SALE order with NHTSA. I DON’T BELIEVE THEY FILED A SUBSEQUENT NOTICE TO THE FEBRUARY FILING. Every day there are recall notices. Most are narrow in scope but this will involve umpteen thousands of cars. There is no end date because they don’t know when a new part will be available. Once available it could be many months before owners are able to have the problem part replaced. It takes 2+ hours a car. The dealers are already overwhelmed because of limited space and mechanics. If these companies don’t get fined for this type of behavior, it will not stop. I am talking millions in fines. The FAA does it. More people drive than fly yet it seems the Federal Transportation Department does not have or doesn’t want to exercise this option. Just look at what has been going on for over 15 years with Takata airbags which could be fatal if opened. Just today 577,000 cars from Ford and Mazda were issued a DO NOT DRIVE notice on the news. Granted they were for older models but people who need transportation will still drive. Why hasn’t the government over the past 15+ years stopped the buying of them.

My 2024 BMW X5 has been on recall which is The Integrated Brake (IB) system/ safety recall since February, 2024. The brake system is not functioning properly and sometimes the car brakes automatically by itself which is a concerning issue and may lead to a crash. I have reached out BMW of Silver Spring many times they just don't care and they keep saying we can not do anything at this time and I even drove there couple times to talk to them at the dealership they keep saying same thing we are waiting for the parts. I received a call from one of their service department people called Alex said we have the parts available and we can service your vehicle I was out of town for work and when I came back to Virginia and drove to dealership and asked the same person who called me about the recall repair he said we don't have the parts available and we can not do anything at this time. I told him you called me that you guys have it available and I was out of town and when I returned to Virginia and drove from Stafford, Virginia all the way to BMW of Silver Spring, Maryland for 2 hours with traffic and he kept lying to me that we have to wait and he said he will call me soon in few weeks but it has been months he never called me. and I called him and asked him you never called me how are we going to solve this issue or BMW needs take care of this issue he said I have to call the Corporate I called BMW corporate they keep saying we don't have any answer or we can't tell how long does it take. so the car has been on safety recall for 6 months now and BMW has failing to solve this issue and I have had the worst experience with BMW.

While driving on a highway, several lights illuminated on my dashboard instrument cluster, including the ABS light, a red BRAKE light, a yellow PARK light, and the dynamic stability control light. The message center reported to "drive carefully" however none of this appeared urgent. I decided I should maybe test my breaks as I was curious what the problem was. I then proceeded to gently tap my brakes to see what all of this meant, and to my horror, my brake pedal went completely to the ground with no brakes initiated. Thankfully, I was able to move over onto the shoulder and coast to a stop and place my car in Park. The emergency brake would not initiate. This could have ended terribly awful.

The Integrated Brake system is not working properly. Received a recall notice in April 2024 and it is now 3 months later and it is still not fixed. Visited the BMW dealership and discussed the matter with them and they offered no information as to when it would be fixed. We just have to wait until they notify us. BMW stated that they will only fix it if the dashboard warning came on and they will look into fixing the problem. Why do I have to wait for the problem to become an issue before they address it. I think by then it might be too late. We asked for a loaner since they can't get it fixed in a timely manner and I was told, "just to drive the car". This is an accident waiting to happen. So, I am asking the NHTSA to assist in correcting this issue. I know I can't be the only one in this situation.

Given my long commute, I can no longer take the risk of driving the X5 50e. The bell housing of the car is currently emitting a whistling / rusty tricycle sound at low RPMS (1500-2200 rpms / 30 miles per hour or under). I have had the car in for service. During the last visit, BMW kept it for 30 days and only compared it to the sound of other cars. In being able to duplicate the sound, they stated that the sound is normal. BMW reached its conclusion without conducting any physical inspection of the bell housing and its related components to see why the parts are making the noise. They have no idea as to why the car is generating the noise. My shop foreman wrote the following to my advisor to share with me: "..I narrowed down the noise. Noise is possibly mechanical and coming from bell housing area. Created Tsara case and provided information to BMW and video to see what are the next steps we are going to be taking. I would like to remove the transmission and inspect toque converter and flywheel but need there authorization." But again, because BMW was able to duplicate the noise in other cars, they will not authorize any work to determine the true nature of the sound. In doing so, they cannot, in my opinion, say whether this is a safety issue or not. Imagine traveling at a high speed on the freeway and the power train fails! My foreman remains committed to determining the root cause of the problem. As this is the first year with the hybrid engine, BMW should be required to determine the true nature of the sound and determine if it is a safety concern. A physical inspection of the components is a must!

Four Check Engine lights and a Drivetrain Malfunction related to the high voltage hybrid system including problems with the battery cooling, continuing to charge instead of stopping at 100%, and high voltage faults. Coolant smell in the ventilation system in the cabin as well as hot electrical smell after charging and from the regenerative system on a long descent in the mountains. Has been happening multiple times and taken to the dealer multiple times over the past 10 months. The dealer has only replaced a part one time (the evaporative container), but typically just resets the system and sends it home. I have reported this to BMW NA and asked for a buyback, but so far it has been denied.

I am started to lease this car in August 2024. After 2 weeks, the car just halted, unable to move. Luckily this happened in my driveway. It took BMW more than 1 month to repair this. They had to change the combined charging unit with a different part number (upgraded part). At that time the car had roughly 200 miles on the odometer. In February of this year (2024), the car had a drivetrain fault, related to high voltage batteries. That time, it was still drivable but it did spend 2 more weeks at the dealership. Three weeks ago, I had another catastrophic failure with the car halting suddenly. This time, I was not as luck as the first time. It happened away from home. With no power at all, I was able to somehow park the vehicle. It got towed to the dealership again. I don’t have a diagnosis for this case. What they told me is that they thought that this problem with my electric engine was fixed. Last week, after BMW North America instructing the dealership on how to presumably fix the car, the dealership told me that they were told to halt any repairs until further notice. I am left waiting. Even if they think that they may have fix the problem, it seems that bmw does not really know how to address it. There are many such complaints about this specific model on various boards, complaints about high voltage problems, complaints about combined charging units that are defective, complaints about these drivetrain faults and malfunctions. Yet, there are no recalls. I am trying to get this car replaced but I am afraid that it will require a lengthy and expensive legal battle. Please consider looking into it. You will find many customers like me with this model. Having a car halting like this for no apparent reason, without any warning is pretty dangerous. Many thanks.

6 weeks after purchasing the car, the 'check engine' light came on. The dealer evaluated the car (although it took nearly 2 weeks to simply diagnose the issue) and found that the 'high voltage battery control module' was bad and needed replacement. Then, I waited 2 more weeks for the part to be shipped from Germany. Then, another 2 weeks waiting for installation. So - the car was in the service department for 6 weeks. Now, an alert has appeared on the dashboard - "Engine oil service required". The car only has 3920 miles on it. BMWs maintenance schedule requires the oil service to occur between 7 and 9K miles. This car has been a real disappointment.

I purchased a new BMW x5 50e in September 2023. It currently has 1601 miles. As I was getting onto the freeway onramp on 3/7/24, I felt the SUV losing power and got an error message (actually 2). The first message indicated the "High-voltage system," telling me I could continue driving but should have the system checked. The second message stated a "Drive train malfunction" and indicated roadside assistance was not needed. The error messages provided incorrect guidance as I lost all power to drive the SUV. I could drift the SUV over to the shoulder of the onramp. Fortunately, I had not fully gotten onto the freeway, or I could have been hit when the SUV lost power. The car had no power and would not drive. There was no warning of malfunction prior to the sudden loss of power and the simultaneous appearance of the warning message - one followed by another. I tried restarting the SUV, but it would immediately shift back to Park. It was not drivable, and I had to have it towed by AAA to the dealership. The malfunction has the potential to result in a catastrophic outcome. Upon researching the issue online, I found there are several other BMW owners with the same issue; some have been unable to have the problem fixed. The BMW dealer was not yet able to determine the underlying problems and deny this is a known issue (although it is). They told me they have contacted BMW NA and are waiting to hear back. I was told they did not have a loaner and they had done me a favor by putting my car ahead of others. They will not return my calls (only text messages) and cannot give me information about the problem or timeframe I will go without a car. I read others had similar issues and must have their car repurchased by BMW NA. This seems to be a problem BMW is aware of. I do not know if I can ever feel safe in this SUV - there will always be the concern of the SUV running out of power on the freeway or in isolated areas.

- As we were driving down a largely empty highway ([XXX] near Pollock Pines, CA), we heard an extremely loud bang. We looked back and the large rear sunroof (the non-moving one) had exploded - the glass was crazed with shatter fragments and continued to audibly crackle for several minutes. No significant sections of the glass had fallen out, but there were small splinters of glass (< 1mm in size) all over the cabin including on our 4 month old in the rear seat. - The vehicle is currently at the dealer service center awaiting service. It is available for inspection on request. As far as I know it has only been inspected by me and the dealer service representative. - The explosive sound caused a significant distraction while driving, and the glass fragments that rained into the cabin resulted in a minor injury to my hand and posed a risk of internal and external lacerations to all of us. - At no point were there any warnings prior to the explosion. Afterwards, there were also no warnings, though the problem was obvious. There are several nearly-simultaneous reports of this on new X5s: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

This is a follow up on a concern that I raised 3 weeks ago. This is a new car that broke down after 157 miles. The car has been disabled since September 4th 2023. As of today, I still do not have it and do not have a clear ETA for the repair. The diagnosis from the dealership is a defective combined charging unit. The part had to be back-ordered from Germany. A week or so after the incident, the service agent at BMW of Portchester (Kurt Hinrichs) told me on the phone that the part is undergoing a design upgrade. Hence the initial 7-10 business days minimum for the part to arrive would have to be revised. I did complain with bmw, including copying the CEO of bmw of north america in one of my complains as I was not receiving any (none) attention from customer service. Customer service did respond after this escalation. They offered me 5000 USD and sent me a check accordingly. They also told me that the part would be received by the dealership by 9/25. The dealership called me then stating that they expect to receive the part towards the end of the week of 9/25. As of today, 9/28 - 12 pm EST, they have not received anything and have been unable to tell me where the part is or when they really expect it. Without the part, the car is not drivable at all. I am sending you this note to report this hoping that there is not something more fundamentally wrong with the 2024 X5 50e, to the point that the manufacturer might be redesigning parts on the fly after having sold the car to at least one customer.

This happened suddenly with no warning lamps (etc) as the car had been working just fine. Also, within my bmw account, this car with this VIN has since been listed to have an open recall. I did not receive any other explicit communication from the manufacturer about it and I only noticed it today. I do not believe that the notice was posted in their portal prior to this engine incident. In fact, the recall does not show on nhtsa. The car now requires a back-ordered component to be changed.
